So I'm poor, and I'm pretty sure my laptop kicked the bucket for good last night.
I found an IMac 333 MHz on craigs list and they took my offer of $85 for it.
it apparently belonged to the guy's grandmother and has hardly been used.

did I do ok?
I don't know, even though it's old that seems like good deal to me for the price...it's not like I can afford a brand new computer right now...and I mainly needs it for internets, photos and music...

this is it (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/sys/836606623.html).

I haven't used a mac in years, but I'll figure it out.

I'm kinda stoked. I hope it doesn't turn out to be totally crap.

no

that thing must be then years old if not more

you can't do anything to it

oh wells...

so tell me what problem I'm going to have exactly? cause I really probably won't be trying to do anything too advanced with it.

I should just expect it to be really slow?
I'm not going to be storing that much data on it anyway.

and I needed a computer under 100 bucks...so I don't really feel like I could have gotten anything any better.

you could post on the bbmb...

i don't really know actually. i've never used a computer that slow.

i can imagine that even having too many windows open would bog it down.

it should be perfectly fine for normal internet shit.

Yeah, it'll be pretty slow - not impossibly slow, but pretty slow. When I bought my dell pc for college (5 years ago) it started out at 500mhz.

What's a little more daunting is that it might not handle the new versions of Mac OS X smoothly. I'm not saying they won't run, but that might compound the speed issue. It'd be slow for messing with photos, and slow if you were still needing to edit webpages or do photoshop stuff (which I think you were for a while?).

the stock hard drive of that model is only 6gb

ok. good to know.

I'm sure I'll make due.
no mater how slow it is it wil be better than an laptop with a burnt out back light...and when I save up some cash I'll get a new one.
this is definetly a temporary fix.

just a singe dvd has 9gb...

most store bought pc's come with 250-750gb hard drives now

you could have just gotten a cheapo monitor and hooked your laptop to the new monitor

you could have just gotten a cheapo monitor and hooked your laptop to the new monitor

That was a consideration...

except I have no idea how to do that and no one to help me...I can't get the lap screen to work so i can't see what I'm doing...wouldn't I have to tell the laptop to recognize the monitor somehow?

I may still do that if I come across a monitor and the mac can just be a back up computer.

oh well. I can admit I have no idea what I'm doing here.
but it's not like I'm spending major dough on this dinosaur.

the monitor would probably just turn on when you plugged it into the laptop.

I will have to try that eventually...there is info on my lap that I want to get off of there.

also I should probably point out that my laptop is about the same age as the imac I'm getting. I would bet they are probably running on similar specks. or not...we'll see.

85 isn't bad for a computer that does precisely what you need it to do for the moment...long term though you will need to upgrade. In 1997 when I was in grade 5 my school had computers that were 433 Mhz, to give you an idea.:D

It'll make a fun conversation piece, maybe in a couple weeks you could turn into a fish tank!

I remember when I was tech on those machines for Iomega, it worked well for texting and stuff, they get hot quick and very little if no upgrading is possible. I highly doubt any relatively new Mac OS can run on it.

^ yeah it's a pretty blue color so it will match the room really well.:D

I don't care anymore.
the stuff i need to do with it is pretty basic.
I'm going to remain optimistic that it will suit my needs for NOW.

thanks for the feed back though, at least I'm clear on the limitations I'm facing.

Ok guys you talked me out of it.(y) Good job.
(I guess I should have clarified that I didn't actually buy it yet. hee hee)

I finally got a hold of an old friend who is gonna hook me up with either a monitor for my laptop or another laptop of some sort. so it's all good.

Thats pretty slow and you'll struggle to upgrade it to a half decent spec but for the money you've paid I think you've done ok.

I doubt you'll get osx working on it, well you'll defo not have the the spec for the latest incarnation. You'll have to find an archive site of old mac software.

If it's just for the internet and word processing then it'll do.

My one piece of advice (not about power) is to get a new mouse. That little round one will give you the 'apple claw' in no time.

oops just read. I'm late.

According to that spec its running OS 8....that's ancient.

If your budget was 100 quid then you can't complain, but id say itll be fairly slow. You could probably browse away ok, but OS 8 shipped with Internet Explorer 3 and 4...they are pretty bad browsers. An awful lot of sites made these days will look completely wrong in them and im guessing anything with Javascript (Facebook/GMail) just wont work at all.

this is just speculation, but if it is runnng OS 8 id say alot of sites wont work right on it, and getting it to run OS X would be tricky.

Edit: I just realised your not buying it.

i got my laptop with some extra ram for about $600 and its pretty decent considering.

i'd say you should just save up a little and get yourself something new when the christmas sales come around!

For 1g I got a top of the line Compaq, speakers, all the cable shit I needed, a mouse, a laptop bag, and a HP printer. The reason the price is so high is I bought 'insurance' or whatever on it too. Base price of the laptop was $699 CAD, and this puppy has 2GB of ram and a 160 GB hard drive.
