9/20 - BIGGER crowd, LOUDER bands, MORE bruises
spiritualized: sounded good, beautiful junkie hymns; didn't make TOO much of an impression.
I'm a broken record with 'smaller rooms preferred' refrain - but the power of an intense performance in a contained space is always more POW than a big gig.
cold war kids: the crowd singing along, the guys switching instruments multiple times... a joy.
del tha funkee homosapien: far better than expected (have heard scathing reviews of his live act) and he kept the crowd moving.
He alone of all the acts blowing smoke ("beautiful crowd" "beautiful people") dared call us ugly - hell, del, it's a battle down here and I don't know why!
ghostland observatory: got close, in a nice pocket of happy tripping dancing hippies. The set itself was tripped-out: dry ice, no spotlights, lead singer aaron behrens showing off his range. Definitely worth the wait.
x: drew a tiny crowd, but after being pressed like a flower for hours it was a relief. The band sounded SUPER TIGHT. exene cervenka sounded strong but acted like a zombie... Didn't stay for the whole set, missed eagles of death metal anyway.
atmosphere: sounded SO good until
they drank some wine and put on the kenny g
the national: if the smiths sucked
they'd be the national.
devo: had planned on sts9, but the last-minute switch from the who-cares-Black-Crowes was a must-see. They are still freaks who love the bass - only now they look like your uncle. Mark's vocal were pristine.
They drew a douche heavy crowd (maybe the lesson is to go front left instead of front right?), too...
Drunken frat holes of all ages who hugged each other and punched girls (my BACK was in a fight), totally useless security
... where's that girl with the nail file?
How was your weekend?
Oh! Almost forgot! man man: trippy circus shit. arrived mid-set, and either they were covering 'take me out' or ripping it off... for a long time. Listened as we left. Ain't no gogol bordello... they owe some people a dollar.
