Well?

I'm currently waiting for it to download and am about to head out for a while. I probably won't get to it until tomorrow. Is it decent?

I have Aha Shake Heartbreak and I just got Youth & Young Manhood this weekend.

I'm no diehard fan, but I like them.

I've loved this band since my mate picked up their first album on its release day and lent it to me a few days later with words along the lines of "You have to listen to this". Back then I didn't have a clue as to who they were, and now they're the biggest thing since sliced bread. Every teenage girl and her dog sports a KOL tshirt. Oh how times have changed.

But it appears they have "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" syndrome. Massive in the UK, but not so hot in the USA. So to fit in, they've gone for some USA-friendly U2/hillbilly-fused schmaltz (I've even read one reputable source describe it as an album full of songs that even Kid Rock would turn down).

The first 3 tracks are good, very good in fact, but then there's the new single 'Use Somebody'. Oh dear. Utter tripe, awful, rubbish, crap etc. I cannot believe that this is even by the same band. It's a joke, right? But, alas, it's not. And it's pretty much downhill from there, with 'Manhattan' and 'Notion' being the only (if very slight) exceptions to the suckiness factor. Oh, and just when you think that 'Cold Desert' has fucked off for good, and the album has been put out of its misery, it fades back in again and prolongs the torture.

Dear god, KOL. Go away and do some more crack, sleep with some more hookers, throw some more televisions at hotel staff, whatever, just do it and don't come back until you can write decent music again. Fucking hell (n)

Word.

Yeah, I'm not feelin' this one either. I totally agree w/ your synopsis which is sad because their earlier stuff is some of my favorite shit. And yes, it's very difficult to find people in the States who've heard of them.

Also, Freebie, you're from Wolverhampton, right? My boss is from there and was going off today about their football team. The wolves, correct?

Nah, I'm a Manc born and bred

I went to uni in Wolverhampton though(Wolvo, Wolves, Wovler), and their football team is indeed nicknamed The Wolves. They're usually shit, but doing quite well at the moment, so congratulate him on that. Pity the city's a bit of a half-abandoned shithole though :/

Ask him if he's ever ejaculated in the toilets of the Hog's Head, because I know I have ;)

Also, call him a yam-yam and see if he punches you in the face.

ok

the first three songs are really good. the rest of the album seems kinda boring. maybe more listens will wake it up. also, it's way too polished.

definitely nothing like their previous album

I like Sex on Fire but not really familiar with anything else from this band.

Give me a couple representative songs to check out.

so if i'm going to pick up an album by these guys, which direction should i head?

i've checked out a bunch of random stuff so far and i enjoy most of it, but it all seems to be from different albums

Because Of The Times.

Their best effort. Charmer is the shit.

I'm diggin the new album more now, but still not as much as their others, which are all badass. You can definitely hear their southern roots on the first two, which seems to gradually wane with regards to Because of the Times. The new one is more stadium rock than anything.

id say this and the last album are half natural progression due to maturity, growing up, kids, wives/girlfriends, and the other half a lean toward mass appeal. either way its good for the most part. i enjoy it, my old man saw them alst night live and said they were tight but not that into it which is what i thought on ther because of the times tour (festival performance to be fair).

anyway call it what you want but i quite like it. nothing on aha-shake or youth and young manhood tho. 2 near-perfect albums and some of my favourite of all time.

So, I saw them last night. They played A LOT of older stuff, which I was pleasantly surprised by. Excellent show.

i think i would have gone if the tickets weren't so damned expensive....

i find it ironic that i read these articles about how they can't figure out why they aren't as popular in america, and yet they charge 40+ bills to get into their shows...fuck if i'm going to pay that kind of cash to "check out" a new band i don't really know. they need to play some cheaper stuff to get the casual fan through the door....

They played a decent sized venue on Friday here. So they must have a decent sized fan base. $50 a ticket though...fuck that.

Seeing them at Sasquatch next week. I've heard a lot of the previous albums on Pandora and Grooveshark, good stuff. I don't hate the new album as much as some in this thread (Closer, Manhattan, I happen to like, I think it's Revelation) but maybe that's because I haven't seen them come up. Anyway, I'm gonna get Aha Shake Heartbreak for sure. Haven't heard enough of Youth and Young Manhood.

My brother in law banged on about KOL back after their first album, I did quite like it a lot. I never really listened to them myself though, but the girl likes KOL so I've been listening to them a lot now.

Yes I know people always will go 'oh their new stuff is crap now that everyone knows about them, boo hoo' but whatever, I enjoy it all.

never heard of these guys until the other day i was at a bar and this song came on and i knew it was new rock, because i had never heard it. im usually pretty well versed in songs and the longer this song played the more i liked it.

turned out to be sex on fire. great track imo.

gonna get the albums tomo and see what else they have going for them.

I enjoyed their performance of Use Somebody last night. There really isn't that much to that song, though, is there? Not that that's a bad thing.
