View Full Version : Diagnose me!

I've been sick on and off for a few months now, with the same set of symptoms cropping up each time: starts with a severe acne breakout on my forehead, a sore throat, enlarged glands, sore jawline, pus on my tonsils and a persistent (not too bad) fatigue set in. At first my doctor diagnosed me with severe tonsilititis, but ordered a blood test to check out my iron levels (I'm vegetarian and was bitching to him that I'd already been sick twice in a matter of a few months).
The blood test comes back and it turns out I've got Glandular Fever (or mono) because my white blood cell count is abnormally high, however my liver function checked out ok, so did my iron levels, whatever. Anyway. I'm deficient in B12 and he's worried about that so I start a course of B12 injections, he gives me penecillin and all is good for about a month, then same shit again. I go see my doctor, back on penecillin, more B12 shots, and I'm ok again.
Till last week! It's started again the same way, and I'm really fucking sick of blood tests and injections and trips to the doctor and having to take time off work, etc. I get my latest blood test results tomorrow and I'm going to ask the doctor wtf it is that keeps coming back. Glandular Fever seems to check out, but I haven't suffered from any kind of fever, or the appetite loss or extreme fatigue that is supposed to typefy Glandular Fever this whole time - and my doctor insists I shouldn't be relapsing (apparently Glandular Fever "doesn't do that").
Anyway. Suggest possible ailments/diseases/infections I may or may not be currently harbouring in my body so I can uneccessarily worry that I'm dying while my doctor arses about, sticking me with stupid B vitamins!
You're vegetarian. Are you getting your proper vitamins? you did mention that whenever the doctor gives you a B12 shot, you feel better, and many vegetarians need to take vitamin supplements to offset the deficiencies from not eating meat.
Or you might have AIDS. I'm not a doctor!

If you're trying to be dirty, it's ok, I've got that one well covered.
The B12 is a long term thing, it's just so I don't wreck up my nervous system or some shit later on...short term it's not supposed to fix much, to my understanding. Not dramatically anyway.

What is infectious mononucleosis ("mono")?
Infectious mononucleosis, "mono," "kissing disease," and glandular fever are all terms popularly used for the very common illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV is a member of the herpesvirus family. Symptoms of infection with EBV include fever, malaise, and sore throat. The designation "mononucleosis" refers to an increase in a special type of white blood cells (lymphocytes) in the bloodstream relative to the other blood components as a result of the EBV infection.
Research has shown that, depending on the method used to detect the virus, anywhere from 20% to 80% of people who have had mononucleosis and have recovered, will continue to secrete the EBV in their saliva for years due to periodic "reactivations" of the viral infection.
Available antiviral drugs have no significant effect on the overall outcome of mono and may actually prolong the course of the illness. Occasionally, Strep throat occurs in conjunction with mono and is best treated with penicillin or erythromycin. Ampicillin and amoxicillin should be avoided if there is a possibility of mono since up to 90% of patients with mono develop a rash when taking these medications. They may then be inappropriately thought to have an allergy to penicillin.
Mono tends to be more aggressive in patients with abnormal immune systems, such as people with AIDS or those who are taking medications that suppress immune function.

contrary to popular belief, vegetarians get the same vitimins as meat eaters EXCEPT B12. i take sublingal B12 every day. maybe you could switch to that instead of the injections. might not be as irritating.
here's a really good article on how B12 is the only thing missing in a vegetarian diet. stop believing the hype! meat is not better than everything else!

I've researched your symptoms, look at all of the factors, and double checked all of my notes. I have come to the conclussion that the condition that you suffer from is called "ass face".

:) That's what I've been trying to tell everyone, my iron levels were great - it's just that B12 is really difficult to get in the quantities required, cause it's only really found in meat and to a lesser extent in animal products like dairy and eggs.

I just had some sort of bizzaro infection that sounds sort of similar maybe, now that I think about it. Lymph nodes got all swollen, even the ones on the back of my head, which is pretty uncomfortable. I felt like damnit and had pain in my bottom jaw and a sore throat. I also got some of those super uncomfortable swollen tastebuds, and I just felt like there was some sort of infection swimming around in my head. Lasted for maybe a week and went away. Except one of my swollen up tastebuds was on the veeeeeeeery tip of my tounge and I kept hurting it/biting it whenever I ate/talked/drank/did anything and I still have a hurty place there :(

my coworker got mono a couple of years ago and it came and went at first, then finally came back and made her super sick. it was exacerbated by a bladder infection that turned into a kidney infection and all these things exacerbated each other and ran her immune system into the ground.
the only thing that helped was rest and time. and I guess the antibiotics.

Antibiotics won't help mono, though if any subsequent bacterial infections pop up it would be good for those.
I got a pretty wicked case of mono summer 07. It's a really variable disease. My cousin got it and was pretty fine, felt a little fluish, kept playing volleyball and everything. I got it and was basically on bed rest for a month and ended up in the hospital twice and had all kind of interesting complications.
It doesn't really sound like mono to me, but it effects eveyone differently so maybe.

ya, I was talking about the kidney infection. that got better, so she was able to better recover from the mono. I guess. I'm not a doctor.

Ok so I went to the doctor today and had a massive whinge at her - and she agreed with me that it's not Glandular Fever again. She's worried because whatever it is keeps cropping up regularly with the same pattern of symptoms. My blood seems fine, so she jabbed my tonsils with a stick and sent it off to get tested. I'm taking some form of general infection medicine now for a week, and I'll get something else depending on the test results next week. I will also have a blood test so they can test for a bunch of crap they didn't before. I just want to have my tonsils out cause they seem to give me a fair bit of grief...maybe I can get it done when I get my wisdom teeth out!
My facialist (or whatever) said that my bad skin is at least partially caused by the glands in my neck and jawline being out of whack.
Everyone at work thinks I'm either some diseased thing or a total hypochondriac because I'm always on some sort of medication/going to the doctor/waiting on test results. Bahhhh
