VH1 is doing a countdown of the 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs Of All Time to prepare for this year's Hip Hop Honors, and "Hold It Now, Hit It" came in at #27. They had Doug E. Fresh, Ice-T, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Big Daddy Kane, Prince Paul and some others talk about it and talk about how great the Beastie Boys are.

Personally, I'm surprised that "(You've Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" WASN'T picked for once. Although I think the only reason that they picked "Hold It Now, Hit It" was because it had a music video that they could show. "Paul Revere" is much, MUCH better.

Anyway, good to see a Beastie Boys song that wasn't "(You've Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" make a list, and be high up on the list at that.

I think Fight For Your Right not being a hip hop song might have something to do with it not being picked.

They said that "Hold It Now, Hit It" gave the Beastie Boys "street cred in the hip-hop community." Which made me go, "Huh?" Hey, "Hold It Now, Hit It" is not a *bad* song, but I also think that it is one of the weaker songs on Licensed To Ill. Like I said, "Paul Revere" would have been the better choice.

I totally love the Hold it now video - it cheers me up every time.

I'd say Paul Revere and The New Style are stronger, more classic tracks and really great examples of both the Beasties and Hip Hop.

I think Hold it now is a really fun track and the video captures the fun of the boys - not knocking Fight for you Right but Hold it is definitely more credible in my eyes.(y)

I'll have to search out the countdown thing.

This surprises me. I love the video more than the actual song. Don't get me wrong, LTI is a masterpiece and struck a nerve with me when I was 17 I wore out about a dozen cassettes.

This just strikes me as an odd choice. Does the song need to have a video to make this list? I would have picked Brass Monkey.

I don't think having a video influenced the countdown that much. Besides, Paul Revere DOES have a video, and it wasn't chosen. :D

The list is pretty whack, anyways.

C'mon...J.J. Fad? 3rd Bass? Fuckin' TONE LOC? I'm suprised that "Informer" By Snow didn't make it. Also, the only repeat artist on the list is Run DMC, so it's obvious they were just trying to cram as many different acts in there as possible. You can't tell me that The Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Tupac, or Eric B and Rakim didn't have at least one more song that was better than "Just a Friend".

Does the song need to have a video to make this list?

Considering that it's VH1, I'm going to have to say yes. And all of the artists only had one song picked, so that they could do a short biography on the artists.

The Beasties weren't the only artists who had a weird song choice. Nas gets in for "One Love" but not "It Ain't Hard To Tell" (which actually HAD a music video!)? A Tribe Called Quest gets in for "Check The Rhime" but not "Award Tour"? Run-DMC gets in for "It's Like That" but not "Rock Box" or "King Of Rock"? Fuck the heck?

Hold it Now is classic...Any song of LTI bar Girls could make lists like these, although I've never thought She's Crafty was hugely strong. Everything else though for sure.

Pump it up homeboy just don't stop...
