Our economy is a lot like Carl Sagan's Universe. A trillion is a million million. We just passed 10 trillion Dollars in debt.
We are in an ever expanding universe of debt.

It's all so difficult to comprehend because I still get up and drive to work every day. I don't have to go stand in line to buy bread. I'm still paying my mortgage just like I did pre-explo$ion. All that's really changed in my world is my 401k which I don't need for a long time, and the bombardment of news stories in my face about how BAD it all is...... so yeah. But in the back of my mind is like, whoa, will I be out of work in the near future or something because of this shit or what. I mean will it directly affect someone not really all tied up in stocks? Eventually?

yeah, thats how I feel. I haven't felt anything direct. I'm still a student but I don't think it'll affect my career path either (Film, which seems to hold its ground pretty well since every year the economy has got worse and yet every year more money is made from movies)
it's affecting my career choice. there were already far too many law students for too few lawyer jobs already, but with this, there's going to be even fewer. with fewer private sector jobs available, more people will compete for (lower paying, but easier hours) government jobs, only oops, there are fewer of those too because all federal, state, and local governments have to cut spending.
so i was never really in a position to find a great job, but now i'm going to have a hard time finding a job at all. that's not good because i have 6 figures of nondischargeable debt

its times like these that i really love my mediocre paying, secure-as-hell career path.

yea but law school is like "going through mental gymnastics", it just teaches you how to think fast. which is a really good thing, and a very marketable skill. just because your going to law school doesnt mean you have to become a lawyer. hell look at most of congress, im guessing politics wouldnt interest you either (especially at this point in history). but that degree will be worth every penny my boy.
i dunno though, i'm told that having a law degree actually hurts you in your search for non-law related jobs. employers see that you have a JD and say "hey, this guy's just gonna quit once he finds a lawyer job, i'm not going to waste my time hiring and training him" (and i can say that at least in my case that would probably not be wrong). i've heard of law school grads who actually took their JD off their resume in order to find non-law jobs, because people just won't hire JDs, they know they're not going to stick around.

well it depends on if thats what your really going to do than obviously, than its understandable. look at the big picture though, there are so many morons in this country that have jobs, some good jobs, that youll find something.

fo sho, anything with techmology will be good for da jobs.
I'll try and be as liable as possible on this board and hopefully BBMB will need to hire a lawyer Bob. So there is a job for ya!
What goes up must come down but it also likely to go up again. Just because America and most of europe is fudged, doesn't mean you can't just jump into the next super power - go to china!
And like a few who have pointed out; so rich people are poorer now, things are a little more expensive forcing me to eat healthier, drive less and cycle more. Its not like this is a bad thing. The vaguely intelligent will find a job - stuff always need doing, the taxes from those jobs will pay for the rest who can't find work... The same circle they'll always be.

it fucked up my mom and uncle's jobs at the real estate business and well the place my mom was working, during as a loan officer - finished. Closed down, but it had nothing to do with what happened this year. The Real Estates business became fucked up way before this.

immigrants or people barely getting adjusted to common society will have tough shit circling around about them. It just means there are lower levels than the position you are believe.

yeah, poor bar stewards... I work for immigration to - poor poor bar stewards.
I just think it ain't as bad as the media makes out. I've been saying when I worked in banking that, the wealth is artificially high, house prices are too high and food is too cheap - something had to give. It did give - this can only be a good thing!
Nationalising of some banks!! This is a socialist dream, we should be celebrating. Ok, so some will lose out and as always it'll be the super rich and super poor - but when you try to be logical about it all, the vast majority of our peers are and will be fine. We are selfish creatures - I can't give a shit about others while my sister has only just come out of hospital, my mum is dying and I want a motorbike. I am willing to bet that people will carry on worrying about the same trivial stuff and ignore the bigger picture mostly - just like i am :)

My dad hasn't been able to work full time for a very long time now. He deals with construction, and people aren't building new stuff, so there's no work for him. He used to work 50-60 hrs a week most times. Now he picks up around 30. He took out money from his retirement to make house payments till things got better. Things didn't get better and now all his money is gone. He will likely be foreclosing on the house in the next couple of months and moving in with his girlfriend. He's been putting it off because he doesn't feel that they're ready to live together, but he doesn't have much choice now.
He also has some serious medical problems requiring surgery and staying out of work for 6 months. He's been putting that off because he doesn't want doctors cutting up around his spinal cord and because he hasn't had the money (and because we have the worst health insurance ever). I dunno, maybe once he doesn't have the house expense he can take care of himself properly. I'm going home this weekend and likely packing up/throwing out a lot of my stuff for whenever he does give up on the house. He's been asking me to for awhile.
I don't really care about losing my house, as long as my dad and my doggies are taken care of, but I know how depressing it is to him and that's what really bothers me :(
/serious
Today my dad told me that I don't have to worry since I don't have any money.
