View Full Version : Nashville Debate

Tonight's setting for the debate is unique, a town hall meeting in which NBC's Tom Brokaw will serve as moderator, selecting questions from an audience of 100 to 150 Nashville voters identified by the Gallup polling company as undecided in the election. Brokaw will also draw on more than 6 million questions from voters who have already e-mailed them in.
They say the odds of the gloves coming off are very probable tonight. This is probably the most heated arena these two candidates can be in, and the town hall style favors McCain. Their target audience in the debate: the roughly 10 percent of the electorate who are undecided and an additional quarter who say they might still change their minds before Nov. 4.
In Florida, GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin raised Obama's ties to 1960s-era radical William Ayers and to the Democrat's former pastor, the incendiary Rev. Jeremiah Wright. In New Mexico, when McCain was asked, "Who is the real Senator Obama," he referred to him critically as a "Chicago politician" and argued that the Democrat says one thing and does another.
McCain nailed it, Obama is from Chicago
Obama, in turn, asserted in North Carolina that McCain was engaging "in the usual political shenanigans and smear tactics" to distract from economic issues, even as Obama's own aides in Chicago assailed the Republican nominee for "an angry tirade" and went after him for his role in the 1980s Keating Five savings and loan scandal.
So here comes round two, I have basically given up on whether this question will ever be asked of a presidential candidate again, What does "Made in America" mean to you?
The POTUS job seems to be much more focused on representing conglomerate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_conglomerates) interest than the actual US workers concerns (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/04/business/economy/04jobs.html?em).

it seems far more blatant than usual, yeah
like
q: how would you rank these three items in terms of priority
a: all three are #1
or
q: how can we trust either of you when both of your parties fucked this up?
a: well you see it was bush's fault
more blood. i say we sacrifice more blood

I think it's about to get more heated.
"the straight talk express lost a wheel on that one". yes! zing!
just answer the question, don't talk about taxes...don't talk about taxes...don't...talk...about...damnit!
look at mccain. look at him grinning. he did that on purpose

I'm not sure this forum is doing mccain any favors, he looks like he's toddling around on wooden legs.
everyone in the crowd looks so nervous!
there should be a rule for the third debate that nobody's allowed to talk about taxes. i think i have a fairly firm grasp of the candidates' stances on each others' tax policies at this point, i don't really want them to waste any more time talking about it

their debate coaches showed them the clinton debate tapes, him walking around the stage, owning it and getting close to and "connecting" with the audience. mccain is thiiiis close to sitting in that old ladys lap
is that rick santorum's son (http://www.post-gazette.com/images4/2006108rr_santorum_concedePJ_580.jpg) sitting in the front row?

I don't understand what tax credits do. like for the $5000 tax credit for health insurance. what does that mean? I always get a refund around tax time so does that mean that I would get $5000 on top of my refund?
what if I want to spend that money on soda pop instead of health insurance?

The lines on the floor that they can and can not cross make me nervous. I don't know why, it just does.

IMO, McCain killed it.
Obama's been on the defensive all night,...not answering questions,...interupting Brokaw with followups,...going over the time limit,...
Obama's been downright brutal.
Even I didn't expect him to come off this bad.

I appreciate that obama pressed for follow-ups. mccain is talking a whole lot of nonsense.
I guess nobody knows what tax credits do?
also, did the "surge in iraq" win the war? is there no more war? why does mccain keep referencing it?

Tax credit,...as in when you go to do your taxes in April, there will be a line that gives you a $5000 credit before you figure how much tax you owe. Clinton created the Child tax credit which gives people a $3,500 tax credit per each child they claim as a dependant.

right, but I and most of the people I know don't have to pay extra taxes on april 15, we get a refund. so I'm asking if I actually get that $5000 (which is actually $2500, the $5000 figure is for families) on top of my refund?
and then if I do get it, how much paperwork do I have to fill out to actually use it? ima be pissed if my current non-taxed partially employer provided health insurance gets funked up on a system like that.

Ok, when you sit down to fill out your 1040 forms, McCain will put a line on that form that will add $5000 to the tax that you paid that year.
No added paperwork, just a line on your 1040 that says +5000.
If you were going to get back $500, you could now get $5500.
If you were going to owe $500, you could now get a refund of $4500.

I want some of what you've been drinking. :p
I think that as a debate, it was a poor overall. I think the format with the minute long answers and the lack of follow up meant that we didn't learn anything we didn't already know. On totally superficial points, McCain looked like he was wandering around aimlessly sometimes on the floor while Obama was leaning casually in his stool.

Good luck negotiating your own health care policy all on your own. Especially as you get older and potentially have some actual medical needs. :)

but it's ok, because you get to choose your own doctor and don't have to suffer under a government mandate

Had your political beer goggles on huh?
McCain teetered around near the end of it hardly making much sense, calling Obama "that one", and blocking the teleprompter. He clearly lost and Obama came off looking much more presidential.

wrong... wrong wrong wrong
his plan is to give a family , not individual, a $5,000 credit WHICH IS PAID DIRECTLY TO YOUR INSURANCE PROVIDER (AKA if every citizen is generating this $5k for the insurance companies it's pork for the industry and will likely have little bearing on your actual health care costs.
I should also add that this would for the first time on our history cause your insurance benifits to be taxed by the federal government... Because it's called a tax CREDIT, credit always needs to be repaid. That means every doctor visit you'll be taxed on... if it's anything like how they currently tax my income (~20%) then that's gonna hurt.
Also by "allowing" us (gee thanks) to find a provider out of state that means the insurance companies will be free to move to states with laws and benifits that will be best for their business model, not our health.

Funny, I was looking for the strings on Biden during the VP debate last week.
Downright fucking wooden he is.
