What's the best in your opinion.
I both enjoy/hate getting the crap scared out of me. I live alone so everytime I watch a scary movie I freak the shitsies out of myself and wonder why I do it to myself.
The Strangers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482606/) was the best horror movie I saw this year. I hate empty houses etc.
Ive seen previews for [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IICI7g3jMGI[/URL] and aint no way it will be better than The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Im totally drawn to anything with catholic undertones since I went to private school as a wee lass.

i like horror movies, but i havent seen many in recent years. the only ones i have seen are the ring (sucked balls) and the first two saw movies (first one was cool, second was reasonable).
the only ones to really freak me out as a kid were the nightmare on elm street ones, and then that stupid mask from scream freaked me for a while.
ps: child's play (and sequels) are tops for worst pieces of shit ever on screen

They don't make horror movies anymore, they make gore movies (i.e. Hostel/Saw)
They don't make scary movies anymore, just creepy little kids who haunt hot chicks (i.e. The Ring/Grudge)
I really like The Strangers, and I thought to myself "finally a scary/creepy movie and its based on actual events" ...yeah, yeah and yeah.
Until I found out it was chopped up and the movie had nothing to do with what really happened.

I found it so scary because, sure they bent the truth like hell, but atleast the events were somewhat believable. nothing supernatural etc etc. about the situation.
I kinda want to download "30 days of night"
we shall see.

I agree...in the past 5 years it has been the only movie that truely scared me, and I read about the actual events afterwards so it didn't ruin the movie for me.
It was scary because it CAN actually happen ...unlike all the other ones I listed above....creepy kids haunting people? Homicidal maniac setting up traps so vividly sick and they work? Warehouses that torture people? ...well maybe the last one, those slovanians are kind of crazy.

*if you found the mask part creepy ...rent "Alice Sweet Alice" ...its an old school horror film, and when I saw "The Strangers" ...I knew right away the kids got the idea from "Alice Sweet Alice" ...its brilliant.

I'd like to see The Strangers as I saw a promo clip a month ago and most modern horror is complete shit these days but that looked ok.
Boris Karloff's 'Corridors of Blood' is on TV tonight on BBC2(y)
Watch the Orphanage, it's a spanish film and it's got a pretty chilling clairvoyance scene in it that really gave me the creeps.
I've just rented and watched The Happening. What a load of shitty hype. There was absolutely zero tension/chills in it at all.

The Exorcist and The Shining are still my top two, The strangers was a really underrated movie this year.

Good taste.
Me:
The Exorcist
The Shining
Frailty
Alien
...I'm not sure: are Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs horror movies?

Watch the Orphange.
Good Stuff
I saw The Stangers in the theaters and when the lights were turned on it was like everyone there were let in on a joke that noone else knew. I loved that movie. And afterwards I talked to various acquaintances and they concurred that Home Invasions are a Fact of Reality...
It's happened to me 2x when I was in the States

Good horror is hard to find these days.
Of the recent ones, I loved "30 Days of Night", it totally owns (if you just LOOK at it and forget the 465277 plot holes). But you better make sure you get the unrated version, so much cool blood-splilling has been cut off it in the "regular Joe rental version".
Exorcist III is the most under-rated horror flick ever, but you better read "Legion" before watching it.
And a hot tip for a film that is SCARY AS FUCK without actually being a pure bred horror film, I recommend:
Tesis (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117883/)
I dare you to watch it hung over.
It will fuck you up, spit you out and you won't have sweet dreams in a year.

I think they would be suspense? Well silence of the lambs anyway, good taste as well.

You know it's sad when any actual mainstream horror might come out of a video game.

PJ, you da man. Go get it.
Wasn't available a year back, and is kinda pricey (cause most films cost less than 10€ nowadays) but it's worth 13 squid:

Of course, some sources tell me there are cheaper ways, I can only say <CENSORED BY A TIRED ECHELON ADMIN>

1) You're probably right
2) You're very kind :)

I can say for certain that no movie has ever scared me more than playing the original Metroid at 1am when I was a kid. Except maybe Nightmare on Elm Street.
With that said I enjoy a good (or bad) zombie movie mostly for the gore, be it professional or not. The Exorcism of Emily Rose I feel was done really well. It balanced the line of realism with the supernatural(?) pretty well. No  from me the entire time.

Alice is a great film, thanks for the advice. I should get it on blu ray.

Maybe it's because I deal with demons on a daily basis that I no longer want to be scared, and I find nowadays I'm more into romantic comedies, that have a message of hope and inspiration.

30 days of night was a pleasant surprise, very decent horror movie. my favourite horrors include the shining, exorcist III and alien. in fact i'd say exorcist III is superior than the original film.
just thought of another...

Finally someone who agrees with me on that.
Only shit part in III is the finale with the floor busting open and... you know, it just looks kinda cräp.
But you have to forget & forgive, cause the movie is just awesome in general.
You read the book, "Legion"? The stuff in the book is scarier than in the film. It's a class A read, man.

I keep meaning to watch both the original and re-make of "the last house on the left" but I can't find anyone to watch 'em with me :(
Best trailer ever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0r066kUBUo)

Amen to that.
I like the classics since they do freak me out. The Shining and Rosemary's Baby being on top for me. I forgot about the Exorcism of Emily Rose though. The cats freak me out.
Speaking of cats, I don't know if it counts, but Let the Right One In was bomb. (y)

the shining, easily.
i think candyman is underrated (at least none of you guys mentioned it yet). i don't normally get scared watching films, but something about that guy's voice creeps the shit out of me.
