Ok, this is some vital Beastie Boys trivia that you probably have waited for all your life without even knowing. I gathered some statistics from the 178 photos of the boys that I could find on the Last.fm website.

This is what I found:

The most common "formation" that the boys took for a photo:
MikeD standing on the left, Adrock in the middle and MCA to the right. (20% of the photos)

Least common line up:
Adrock on the left, MCA in the middle and MikeD on the right. (13.5% of the photos)

And here are the individual probabilities of where you will find them in a photo:
MikeD standing on the LEFT: 36.0%
MikeD standing in the MIDDLE: 32.6%
MikeD standing on the RIGHT: 30.3%

MCA standing on the LEFT: 31.5%
MCA standing in the MIDDLE: 28.7%
MCA standing on the RIGHT: 38.8%

Adrock standing on the LEFT: 32.6%
Adrock standing in the MIDDLE: 37.1%
Adrock standing on the RIGHT: 29.2%

Very interesting to see that Adrock tends to be in the middle while MCA doesn't like that position. But MikeD does not favor one or the other to the same extent.

Note that LEFT is to the left from the photographer's point of view.

Also, don't call me crazy.

Very interesting information but I need some background information to put this into perpective for me.

Are these photos of them on red carpet/photo ops? Are these random stage poses (3 MCs)

What era are these sampling of pictures from? LTI to present or just more recent stuff? Can you make any assumptions through the years that position have changed over time.

Is MMM in any of the pictures and if so...where does he fit in?

And finally can you tell me what's the average distance from shoulder to shoulder to shoulder and what is their maximum and minimum distances.

Thanks for the great work! :D

The images are here: http://www.last.fm/music/Beastie+Boys/+images

They are typical promo shots spanning all eras. Looking at each era independently there would definitely be other probability distributions. But I leave those calculations as an exercise.
