it's kinda weird they mentioned Bombay in that first article. i've been working for Bombay for 10+ years and i helped to close our local one down at the end of last year. i'd say that's old news. we were one of the last ones to go.

You think times are tough now?
Just wait until Obama redistributes the wealth and raises taxes on all the middle to big businesses.

...but hey, he's really good at public speaking.

good riddance, those stores sucked and there's a reason they're not making it. retail chains create so much waste and everything they sell is made in foreign countries. people have so many more shopping options today because of the internet and they're not going to pay tons of money for basic boring crap.

I'm pissed at Wicke's furniture anyway, they built this butt ugly huge store by my house and it was open for like 3 months or something before they went out of business. so now there's this huge piece of shit just sitting there looming over everything. it's stupid too because there's a vacant awesome-looking old warehouse a half block down that's been for sale for like 10 years that they could've renovated. oh well, now the big ugly wicke's is a temporary halloween store. :/

I feel bad for the people losing their jobs though. :(

Pbbbffft, what are you basing that on? Don't just make wild accusations or spout some talking point you heard from some heavily biased opinion-giver.

The simple fact is that rich people stand to be taxed more and they don't like that. They are the ones who can afford it and quite frankly are the ones who should bail us out of the financial mess we are in now as they are the ones who put us here with their greed. Are you rich? If not just shut up already.

You know lower income or middle class people who promote policies favoring the rich and burdening the middle to lower class are just plain stupid. Or they are like the people at these McCain or Palin rallies lately.

This is where the Dems just lose me, every time. They all want to cry "DISCRMINATION" at the drop of hat and yet want to increase the biggest plan for discrimination that was ever beset on the American people. The biggest hypocrisy that ever was. Treating one class of people better or worse than another based on some common trait that differentiates them from other Americans is DISCRIMINATION. "all men are created EQUAL"...remember that part? What if we taxed differently based on skin color? Would that seem appropraite? Hell no. So why should we tax differently based on bank account?

Are you comfortable knowing that there are other Americans who are paying part of "your fair share" for you? Do you like the fact that our government has decided that you are incapable as a human to generate enough worth to cover "your fair share" and thus you need a handout from others? Esentially that you are a charity case. Well, I don't. It pisses me off and demeans my abilities. I am happy and proud to be able to pay my fair share and fucking work hard to do it. Saying it is "fair" or "neighborly" to cut my taxes by raising someone elses belittles me and other hard working people.

That IS the point exactly, it's about equality and fairness thanks for agreeing with me.

I have some family members who've worked for Federated and Nordstrom's here in the Seattle area for decades. They've been through every type of economy thrown at them from Reagan till today.

Just yesterday when I went down to the mall (the busiest mall here in the NW) it was dead. They both said the exact same thing, the past two weekends were the slowest weekends they've ever worked. Sales were off by at least 70%. Car sales have slowed 20% from this same time last year. Real Estate has cratered. Vacations are canceled and dining out has declined to a crawl.

I don't have anything but these observations, there is no quick fix. We're heading into some dark economic abyss we've never been in before. The truly frightening part to me is the amount of people who could be touched by this.

A new economy is needed, something to replace the death of oil and oil burning energy is my best guess, we've hit the wall with greenhouse gas emitting energy sources.

Well, I know I'm just one of those middle to low-income stupid people who are supporting the policies that are going to favor the rich, and you are obviously an Econ or Poly Sci scholar.
But humor me here for a minute if you will,

Let's suppose there's a greedy rich guy who owns a multi-billion dollar business called "Greedy Industries". He employs a thousand people at Greedy Industries. Hard-working Mr. & Mrs Smith who are struggling to raise their kids, pay for their Ford Focus, and pay thier mortgage that they owe more on than their home is worth drag their tired asses to work for Mr. Greedy 5 days a week.

Now in comes President Obama and wants to help Mr & Mrs Smith by raising Mr. Greedy's taxes and lowering Mr & Mrs Smith's taxes.
GREAT!

Now Mr Greedy, being the greedy S.O.B. that he is, realizes that because of these new Obama taxes, that the cost of running Greedy Industries just went up. Greedy isn't going to make less money so he's going to have to raise prices of whateve it is that Greedy Ind. produces.

Now who do you think buys the things that Greedy Ind. sells? That's right, it's Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Higher prices means that Mr. & Mrs Smith will have to tighten the belt and buy less product.

Now here's where it all comes together...

What do think is going to happen when Greedy Ind. sales are down? Layoffs!
Mr. & Mrs. Smith will get laid off from Greedy Ind. and they won't be able to afford that Ford Focus and that inflated mortgage payment.

Now do you see how cutting taxes for the Greedy rich guys is actually going to help Mr. & Mrs. Smith more in the long run?

The tax policies of the last 8 years have hit their climax now. Where are we exactly? Mr. and Mrs. Smith are having a lovely time now are they?

The simple fact of the matter is you cannot trust the greedy to be fair, when it comes to tax policy and the economy just a few bad apples literally spoil the bunch.

President Clinton's tax policies were much harsher and less equitable then what Obama has proposed and the 90's were a profitable time for everyone. So you could say that Obama is wrong too, and is going to easy with the tax increases.

and what exactly is fair or equitable about the current, or proposed tax structure?

First, let's get something straight, there is nothing fair at all about our current tax policy. Individuals have little to no tax haven at all, while corporations are not burdened with the same problem. McCain and Bush support the same policies that favor corporations and are simply not viable for the individual or small business owner.

Second, I probably haven't stated before that I am not comfortable with Obama's plan either. However, his plan is the closest thing to fair we will have and is necessary to shake things back to some semblance of an equitable society. He HAS to raise taxes somewhere, that deficit isn't going to magically fade away on it's own and corporations will certainly adapt as they have in the past. The party is over, so to speak.
