G. Gordon Liddy was the "plumber" in the Watergate break-in, just so happens Liddy held a McCain fundraiser at his house.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns--including $1,000 this year.
Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

also, why is it that comedians have to be the ones to give the hard interviews? john stewart gives some of the hardest interviews i've ever seen (scott mcclellan and tony blair come to mind; blair damn near broke down but john pulled back)

I've noticed this too, comedians have more moxie than journalists. A lie is a lie, equal time to a lie is not reporting, it's co-opting a lie. The truth just seems easier to those who keep waiting for the punchline.

That's a MIGHTY big stretch to say that breeaking and entering is the same as designing, building and planting bombs with the intention to kill fellow Americans, but hey, bring whatever you think need to the discussion in order justify your views. Just don't ask me to buy it.

Obama was 8 years old when Ayres was a radical. Therefore he had nothing at all to do with Ayres behaviour or psyche at that time. The same can't be said said for McCain, although there is no proof of McCain even knowing Liddy at that time. The whole thing is just stupid.

the bombs weren't meant to kill anyone! the only people they killed were members of the group when one exploded when they were making them. way to process and distribute misinformation though. (y)

On top of Dorothy's correction about the intent of the weather underground's history, let me remind you this wasn't a simple B&E, this was THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HAVING HIS PEOPLE BREAK INTO A HOTEL TO GATHER INFORMATION AND TO DISCREDIT HIS POLITICAL RIVALS. THE COMPLETE AND UTTER ABUSE OF POWER THE NIXON ADMINISTRATION SHOWED WOULD SUPPOSEDLY HAVE NO PLACE IN MCCAIN'S WASHINGTON SO "PALING" AROUND WITH ONE OF THE MAIN OPPERATIVES MAKES LITTLE TO NO SENSE. WHY DONT YOU EXPLAIN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH LIDDY MR. MCCAIN?

Adding to what Dorothy said, not only were those bombs not intended to kill people, but they gave advance notice for those buildings to be evacuated to boot.

the word terrorist is used by the protective powers that be to define anyone who is a threat to their own system. that is why the patriot act was so broad- it declares practically anyone who speaks out or acts out as a terrorist. so, yeah, obama knew a terrorist. i know a few too. shit, i probably am one myself.
The real issue is the word terrorist. the idea of terrorist. we have to be able to draw a boundary between al qaeda and that dude who got tazed for asking john kerry about his connections to skull and bones. in my opinion, many of the "eco-terrorist" like earth firsters and ELFers are heroes. declaring our independence from britain....terrorists. martin luther king jr would probably be branded a terrorist if he were alive today.
lets just get over the word terrorist and call it what it is- ridiculous.

O contraire mon amis Dorothy and Droppin'!
Do a little research (a simple wiki will do) and you will find that, admitted to by several Weathermen after the fact, the bombs that killed three Weather Underground members at a townhouse in NYC in 1970 were being built with the intent of setting them off that night at a non-commissioned officers dance at Fort Dix and also at Butler Library at Columbia University . Both with the intention of "bringing the war home'. These were anti-personnel bombs laced with nails for the express purpose of KILLING people! Not just to do some damage to a building, like that makes a difference in the definition of "terrorist".
From wiki
"The only reason they were not guilty of mass murder is mere incompetence. I don't know what sort of defense that is."[25]
In the big picture the whole Ayers-Obama is just a distraction. But make no mistake, Ayers did some bad things and associated with some awful people in his past. He's lucky to be alive and also lucky that he has the opportunity to live out his days with peace of mind knowing that he never killed anyone (even though he has made remarks where he seems to wish he had).
Now I say to you, sweet Dorothy....way to process and distribute misinformation though! Whatever lets you sleep at night.
You have also joined RobMoney$ on my list of most ridiculous sentences posted on this forum. Congrats! I need more funny signature lines.
come on, you're referencing wikipedia? wikipedia is a total joke. regardless, attempting to connect obama to ayers is ludicrious and it just goes to show how pathetically desperate the republican party and their redneck base are.

This is completely unrelated, but there have actually been several studies on the reliability of Wikipedia in the last few years, and not only have they found it to be on par with Encyclopedia Britannica, but in some instances was BETTER than Britannica. It's imperfect and vulnerable to vandalism, but they're vigilant about policing that sort of thing.
And travesty, I admit it's been awhile since I've watched "The Weather Underground" documentary, but I don't recall the members of the Weathermen wanting to actually kill people, but they definitely had no qualms about using violence as a means to an end. Nevertheless, I can't find where Obama agreed with what Ayers did in the '60s. In the G. Gordon Liddy case, McCain actually praised him for what he represents so it certainly merits discussion.

Well, you can do the research, LIKE I SUGGESTED, or you can flip on over to wiki and come up with the exact same information. I just thought wiki would be easier for a topic that, frankly, doesn't merit much real research.

I agree and I am certainly not defending McCain or Liddy. Frankly anyone who is anyone in our political system "is palling around with terrorists" on a daily basis. I mean how are Brzezinski and Kissinger not mentioned before Ayers and Liddy? They are both Campaign adivisors to the candidates fer chrisssake. I mean have we really exhausted talking about the real issues? I don't see how this discussion is helping any of us. Certainly continued discussion of the real issues might actually help develop some useful solutions.
I think it's so humiliating how the cadidates always come up with "a plan" for each issue and then try to "sell" it to America in order to get elected. Then once elected they find that there is no way they are going to get their "plan" through congress exactly the way they "sold" to all of us. So the "plan" get homolgomated by both parties in Congress into something neither candidate could have sold during the campaign so we eventually end up pretty close to the middle no matter who gets elected. Does anyone think Obama's tax plan is really going to get passed in its current form? Please. Do you think McCain is going to build 45 nuke plants? Please. I mean just look at how far both have migrated to the middle just since they started their campaigns. Neither one is still running on the platform they started with. Just google Bush Campaign lies or Clinton campaign lies or any other president+campaign lies and it's wonder we beleive any of these political assholes.

You bring up two excellent points here. Kissinger, in my eyes, is an absolute war criminal responsible for the death of nearly 2 million Indochinese. Not to mention his role in the overthrow of Allende and installation of dictator Pinochet in Chile.
Brzezinski (sp?) is also a troubling figure since he was the one to persuade Carter to fund the mujahadin (sp?) in Afghanistan (which then morphed into a little something called the Taliban and Bin Laden) and has publicly stated he does not regret giving funding to people who later became terrorists. Pretty fucked up, if you ask me.

Thank you. People need to read up on watergate. Liddy was part of a criminal conspiracy being run out of the white house. I happen to think Liddy is mental and an attention whore, but he claims that he volunteered to kill journalist Jack Anderson if that's what the white house ordered. (By the way, my dad loved Liddy and my mom and dad used to fight over him all the time. :p)
As for the Weather Underground -- I can't tolerate anyone sticking up for them. It's bad enough when old hippies romanticize them. I just re-watched that documentary on them last night, so I have a bee in my bonnet. They were spoiled rotten stupid fucking assholes. And the black panthers wanted no part of them.

If it wasn't for the media tacking -gate to the end of every political scandal big or small no a days, the events that took place at the Watergate Hotel might hold a tad more weight in todays world.
The only time it's been at all close to accurate was when it was briefly attached to the CIA/Plame case.
That's one of the things that bothers me so... Nixon nearly lost his job by force over that (he resigned before they decided to fit him with a noose) Yet Bush did the same and worse and yet remained unchallenged....

It shows how really powerless the people have become in a very short time. The government feels invincible and unaccountable and thus acts that way. It's only going to get worse.

i'm not sure if the people have become powerless and are afraid of their government, or are just completely indifferent and tuned into their own lives. both the repubs and dems represent the same corporate interests, and there has been to date next to zero action in regards to holding the bush administration accountable for all of the crimes and impeachable offences they've committed, besides from the oversight efforts currently being lead by congressman henry waxman. maybe the majority have just decided to shrug their shoulders and just want to get by in their lives. or perhaps the lazy corporate media isn't giving americans all of the important information that they deserve, all the while pushing bullshit superficial "news" items and distracting the populace. personally, i don't know why the majority of americans aren't super pissed and protesting in the streets 24/7. i mean, over the last eight years americans have been royally screwed, so badly and profoundly it's astounding. maybe the dems are waiting until they recapture the presidency and have a solid majority in the senate, and then will begin to look into the last eight years. i don't know. either way, i think that it is of the utmost importance and crucial for the dems to do so, in order to restore and solidify the full health and vibrancy of the union.

I've wondered about this myself. You know, at the end of the day, Nixon still respected the federal government and separation of powers. When the supreme court told him to turn over his tapes he did it. I'm not sure that he had to. What would have happened if he refused? The courts depend upon the president and his underlings to follow orders. The courts have no real power. At the end of the day, Nixon's underlings all resigned, admitted their wrongdoing, and went to prison. Again, I'm not really sure what would have happened if they had just said fuck you and refused to participate. At the end of the day, they were people who believed in the government. They did completely fucked up things, but when they were caught the capitulated.
Contrast that with W and Cheney and their complete contempt for the other branches of government. And that attitude permeates the whole of their staff. So you get all these people who just plain refuse to answer questions. They don't turn over the information as ordered by courts or prosecutors. It turns out that the presidency is only checked by the other branches of government if the presidency will let itself be checked. It turns out that who we pick for president is more important than we knew.

"Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and re-inscribed exactly as often as was necessary."
