about hip hop today.

i watched the BET hip hop awards yesterday (n.e.r.d. and common blew me away, luda was great, etc...) but what is so great about lil wayne? i mean i just dont find him musically interesting, or talented... the performance with t-payne was only saved when luda joined in... but what is it that makes lil wayne so spectacular to receive not only the most coveted award of the evening, but a number of other awards?? i just dont get it... not at all. (n)

is lil wayne's musical flavor more like Southern Rap. I mean, most of the rappers I hear in the mainstream are coming from the Southern Rap styles. Back back then I think it was East Coast that was won popularity and then somewhere like in the 90's we get the West Coast and East Coast ties. Gosh dam, I am dazed. Sleepy time.

I wouldn't consider myself a fan of Wayne's. I like some of his tracks (A millie is fucking heat, don't hate) but I haven't copped any of his albums or whatever. He's definitely creative but IMO he's spread a little thin right now.

Every other song on the radio (at work) is a Wayne song followed by a track with Wayne on the hook. The auto tuner is getting played out right now. So is the whole raspy/weird pronunciation/laughter angle he's doing on every track right now.

Not to mention, it sounds like my man is gonna cry or die laughing, sometimes both, ALL OF THE TIME.

But, he's the hottest thing in hip hop mainstream right now and he writes better than most out there.

I really dont know much of the guy except he was on the Boondocks with Cedric The Entertainer and like a whole army of guys are constantly talking smack about him when he comes up in a topic. I have a very lack of knowledge of general popular modern hip-hop.

He went from being tolerable to the most overrated rapper of all time. People make way too much out of him for what he is.

Other rappers and the press keep saying he's so good and now people just believe it because it's said so much. I've heard songs where he's just talking. That's it, not rapping but talking (no, not spoken word poetry either.) I guess I can't understand his genius.

its odd, cuz most people argue lyrics as if they are great, now, they may be great but one thing is important in music... you should be enjoyable to listen to. his voice is the worst of any rapper. He sounds like a fucking toad thats been smoking for 50 years with a sour throat. Thus the auto tuner comes in and tries to save his voice...but he just comes off even more shitty.
