View Full Version : Funeral Songs
What songs do you want played at your funeral?
It was my mums yesterday; we played Joe Cocker - Blue Medley and Ben Folds - The luckiest.
For my dads we also had Blue Medley and a Sanata song but the name escapes me right now.
My mums funeral was good - from wanting to throw up just as we was going in to coming out smiling because the Sister did a fantastic service I was pleased. It was nice to get high again because I haven't really been since my Dad got lung cancer two years ago, and now there is a big pile of pot on my bedroom floor as I type here with my laptop in the morning.. I digress...
Anyway, so I was thinking for mine: Therapy? - Die Laughing and probably a Ben Folds one again - The Luckiest or Still Fighting It (although doesn't quite fit but I love it).

I dont know what I'd choose for myself but at my Dad's funeral last year we had the following playlist (each chosen by an immediate family member)
The Long Run - Redgum
Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
Don't walk away in silence - Joy Division
When the Music's over - The Doors
There was one more and now I can't remember what it was :(
The last one was my Mum's choice - because Dad actually said he wanted that played at his funeral.
I think his funeral was really fitting, a combination of music and words... someone got up and played a piece on the guitar ..a childhood friend of ours (the children) Dad wouldn't have seen him in over 15 years so it was really sweet of him to want to do that.

the woman i was talking about who had cancer had the u2 version of 'unchained melody' playing at her funeral so now everytime i listen to it i cant help but think of funerals, flowers and coffins
how egoistic of her!
bono yelled that loud through the speakers that i was scared it would "wake" her up

It's on one of their greatest hits albums. It is a great version of the song too.
Beatles, Stones, and U2 have a lot of great funeral songs.

At my dads' funeral i chose Street Life -Randy Newman which i always hated but my dad loved it. Don't think it's true but someone told me it was a bit innappropriate coz it's about whores! ihad a three-week old baby so couldn't have cared anyway.
Best ever song played was at my friend Tods'-X-ray Spex-Bondage Up Yours as the coffin slid through the curtain. Perfect.
I do think about this quite a bit- not sure why-i'm not obsessed with dying. It changes a lot but one that sticks is Time for Livin.
Maybe the Banana Splits would be good

When I was younger I made my mum promise to play this Rap-a-lot allstars (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fNfZKBgDmKI) shit at my funeral should I die before her. "Biggity Bang Biggity Bang hit the motherfuckin deck" would have been an appropriate tribute to the extinguishing of my young flame, and would have eased my family's grief. The song has personal meaning to my mum; "I'm hellbound neuguh my life ain't never been heavenly" was one of our shared special phrases.

Nice choices but isn't that Joy Division song called Atmosphere?

" Internet is gay" - Anal Cunt
At my funeral I want something epic that will get people weeping on their knees.
"Circle of Life", perhaps, or on the U2 theme "One Tree Hill".
