This is utterly tragic and should never have happened. Why would someone let their 8 year old kid shoot a gun like this? UZI's have quite a kick...I would imagine most guns would for an 8 year old.

A bb gun is more suitable for a kid this age. I don't get these gun fanatics endangering their kids for machismo. Shooting pumpkins with UZIs, why?

I do support the right to own firearms, but I do not support pure ignorance and gun fanaticism.

It is the overzealous gun owners and idiots who help the gun control lobby because it is usually their kind that have the accidents.

An event at a Westfield gun club turned tragic today when an 8-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the head and later died at a Springfield hospital, Westfield Police said.

The child's death -- caused by a fully automatic Uzi machine gun -- appears to have been an accident; but it remains under investigation, police said.

Very sad. I certainly hope the adult(s) meant to have been protecting this child are held accountable.

There's absolutely no need to own an Uzi ffs.

I work with a guy who is 72 years old (I know, I know, still working at 72 in itself proves how sad the guy is).

Anyway, he's was in Vietnam and Korea and is your typical gun-toting republican. He told us how he took his 9 month old great-grandson to the gun range a few weeks ago.
Not only that, but he tried to tell me how much the kid enjoyed it.

If you've ever been to a gun range, you'd know that not only is it extremely loud, but it's extremely dirty. Gunpowder is everywhere and it seems to stick to you for days afterwards.

This guy told me he found some old ear mufflers and out them on the baby and he loved it.

Gun freaks are weirdos.

Whatever happened to learning how to tie knots and racing soapbox cars?

I wonder if this kid and his father took a gun safety course (usually focused on shotguns, rifles, and pistols...not assault weapons).

If not...his dad is 100% guilty of negligence and involuntary manslaughter, sad to say.

The father is a doctor as well...

I never fired a gun until I was of legal age to hunt and the only gun I handled at the time were shotguns. I didn't shoot an assault rifle or a pistol until the military.

Did anyone hear that story about the guy who was trying to install cable in his house and the drill wasn't working on the walls so he decided to shoot two holes instead and ended up killing his wife who was outside in the garden?

Yeaaaaaah.

That is unbelievable. If the dad didn't care about the safety of his own kid, I'd hope that he would think about innocent bystanders. The kid could have taken out a lot of people.

That would never be allowed at the gun range where I shoot. Automatic weapons are not allowed. It's bad enough that a guy once rented a handgun and went out on the range and killed himself, but at least he had the skill to only take himself out.

Half the fun of going to the gun range is meeting the nuts who work and play there (one regular has a handlebar moustache!!!), but I've never seen a kid anywhere near that young even come to watch.

If you think this is retarded, look up child soldiers. You'll shit bricks.

This is a horrible thing to have happened and the parents will now have to live with this their whole life. That itself is a hefty punishment.

God Bless America!

My young family members little neices and nephews all get the gun safety courses all at super young ages so they can go out and shoot deer in the fall... it's down right CREEPY and I do not support it what so ever. (n)

I hate guns.

I can understand Uzi's being sold. Its easier to hit a school of fish or a herd of deer instead of having to pull back that bolt each time. And what if that heard was to suddenly come and attack you while you were trying to shoot them? Boy howdy, you'd be happy you had an Uzi then!
And that kid died for the 2nd amendment. What a patriotic way to go.

Darwinism reveals itself in tragic ways. Poor kid, someone needs to be help accountable.

Somehow I don't think Darwinism and the Second Amendment go hand in hand. Ask Sarah Palin.

I used to go rabbit shooting with my dad when I was a kid.

I turned out ok. My dad taught me to respect guns and their power and shit, so while I have no desire to own or use one ever again, I don't necessarily think it's overly creepy to learn about it.

This is horribly tragic and extremely negligent. I have two sons, one is that age, I couldn't imagine something like that.

I am however, an avid gun enthusiast. When my sons became interested in firearms I started them off with the good ole BB gun, taught them to use it safely and really emphasised how dangerous it could be if used improperly (like any tool)

I can't imagine what gun range would allow a child of that age to be allowed to operate any weapon, much less an UZI!! Of course it was an accident. That's like saying I let my 8yr old drive my car to the store and he had a wreck. What would any competent person expect?

i never have and never will understand the appeal of guns and the entire gun culture, considering that really, the only purpose of guns is to kill.

"Kill" is not PC, the term I prefer is "render ineffective"

The real purpose of a gun is put a hole in something beyond your physical reach. Think of it as a really long drill, do you understand drill culture?

what i understand are normal pursuits, you know like women, music etc, and not being amazed by instruments of death, or running around playing rambo in the woods.
