I just heard there was a guy in a Mets jersey ready to jump off the Verenzano Bridge because the Phillies are gonna win the World Series tonight.
I hope the big guy's alright.

That's cool.
America doesn't really care to much about your sports either, and we still hold our own (Soccer), so we're even.
...and before we get into the whole "Why don't you invite the rest of the world to your World Championships?" thing,
Our leagues are comprised of the best players in the world.
Japanese, Korean, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Panamaian, Canadian, Mexican, Austraillian, you name it.
BTW, didn't I see you sporting a Yankees hat in a pic you posted?
I could hook you up with a winning team's hat if you want, Bro.

is that sort of why basketball is on the fast rise to becoming the most popular sport on the planet?

Congrats.
Now maybe you angry Philly mother fuckers will stop throwing batteries at Santa.
I don't really know what you're all talking about, but I believe this video is relevant to your countries recent sporting victories?

Ha! Please back this up with evidence!
Football (UK) is miles ahead of any other sport in terms of popularity. It's certainly played professionally in almost all, if not every country on the globe.
I can only base my opinions on what goes on in this country, but British basketball teams tend to last less than 2-3 years at a time before collapsing, and around 50% of the teams in the top tier are subsidiary teams of professional football clubs. There is little to no basketball coverage on TV outside of obscure imported sports channels (a quick 30 second round-up of sports from around the globe between 'Boules Today' and 'Ping Pong Masters', anyone?).
Fuck, even darts gets more coverage over here than basketball.

I don't know why the Brits always have to turn every sports thread into this argument about why Soccer is better than our sports here in America.
It just kind of reeks of an inferiority issue you guys have with every major American sport.
You love your city's soccer team and we love the sports teams in our cities. If your hometown team wins the Premiership I'd be happy for you. Seems kind of retarded to argue about it.
Anyway, here's a cool video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXoEo-gxZcs&feature=related) that gives a glimpse into the excitement people were feeling last night after winning.

Sure, football is probably still tops, but basketball has shot up fast in recent years. Countries like Serbia, Argentina, Lithuania, and China could probably tout it as their most popular sports now.
So while it might not be number 1 in the world, its certainly put itself pretty high up and closed the gap quite a bit in recent years. I think the only thing holding it back is that it ends up as a game of height (something you brits tend to lack)
