I don't know who takes himself more seriously, Joaquin or Sean Penn.

they're both great actors though. i don't think this will last long.

yeah he want's to make music now.

however.. I predict that his music will probably suck. he's probably going to be about as successful as these actor/wannabe rock stars: Keanu, Billy Bob Thorton and Bruce Willis.

I kinda think more actors should quit acting early...before they embarrass themselves with desperate crap roles.

I agree on both counts.

Both are good actors and Joaquin's music will probably suck.

his music will suck hard. apparently he's being sort-of mentored by tim burgess from the charlatans.. uuugghhh! middle of the road central.

as you all know mr. phoenix is my #1 hottie/actor/hottie actor. this is a BAD MISTAKE, JOAQUIN. STICK TO FILMS. YOU ARE ABOVE AVERAGE. LISTEN TO CLAIRE.

I <3 Joaquin

But he's a weird one, probably why I crush on him so hard.

He has NEVER watched any of the movies he's made, way to critical of himself.

I am not surprise by the news, he'll be back though.

Oh great, another millionaire whining about how crap life is.

I mean I'm only insinuating that it'll be whiny but come on it will be won't it?

Damn, he was one of my favourite actors.

Very versatile and talented. One of those actors who had the terrific knack of always making you feel empathy and connectedness with the character he was playing, better than almost anyone else. Tom Hanks did the same perfectly in Forrest Gump.

"lift up higher turn yourself around
knees and chest then f**kin on the ground
get up kids and eat a bowl of damages
get your ass in the game (dramatic pause)

lift up higher turn yourself around
knees and chest then f**kin on the ground
get up kids and look all around"

watch the letterman video! (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2009/feb/12/joaquin-phoenix-letterman)

the sighing! this has seriously got to be a joke.. ha! the guardian makes a good point about casey affleck being pulled into it to.. hmmmmmmm. very curious.

casey is married to summer phoenix, so they are brother-in- laws...

this one definitely hints that he is in on the joke...

ha.. hmmm. i think we are all being duped! it seems a bit... staged. it's so bad it has to be untrue.

if i was the distributor for two lovers or whatever his 'last' film is called i'd either be really fucking pissed he wasn't performing his press duties properly (i.e. not talking about the film AT ALL) or delighted he was attracting so much attention because of being an oddball.

probably pissed though.

yeah, this stunt is definitely testing the boundaries of the old "any publicity is good publicity" theory.

Phoenix just pulled a Glover. This is classic.

Phoenix just pulled a Glover. This is classic.

yup.

it's funny how anybody can look at that interview or recent pictures or any media coverage of his "rap career" and not see it's a joke. all the rapping stuff and photos with his hair looking crazy are from the same night or at least couple of nights.

I'd say he's doing a good job of being a weirdo and probably is pretty weird actually, but the "its casey's time now" gives it away as a hoax.

i wonder if it's some sort of method acting preparation for a movie and we just don't know it yet.

it boggles my mind. even the way he stands and holds himself is different.

heh... holds himself.

Supposedly Casey Affleck has been recording all of Phoenix's routines. Somewhere I read the suggestion that this is a Spinal-Tap like mockumentary attempt. If that is the case, this is brilliant. I can't see how Phoenix could be serious about the direction of his career.

Did anybody see him on Letterman? Very awkward indeed.

Dave: Can you set up this clip for us?

Paul Shaffer laughs

JP: Are you F*#kin' Serious? Just maniacal laughter?

so many great lines from that interview

I don't know what to think from that interview.

Here is that interview (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/11/joaquin-phoenixs-bizarre_n_166229.html), in case anyone missed it. I don't really give a shit about whatever he's up to, it is entertaining and also really cool to see someone work outside the confines of the medias structured platform.

I think anyone with an IQ above 100 is capable of this performance. Most folks truly having a nervous breakdown don't hangout on talk shows.

I've read many comments that Letterman was out of line, he is doing exactly what I would do. Because you know what? Fuck Joaquin Phoenix, there are brilliant people waiting in the wings who can make a difference.
