Twenty years ago we “people-watched” at Baybrook Mall during the holidays. Never had much money – so it was fun watching others shop. Bald men in flip flops is what I remember. Old women with too much money and not enough time. Suddenly – the gaze from others centered on one person. A couple. What did everyone see? Right on cue a black man and white woman passed. So much joy from so many stares apparently. Contempt in some. Envious by all. The proverbial "zebra" just walked through the mall, and we were a witness to it all. Ask those involved, the two holding hands oblivious to the stares some 20 years ago, and they would simply tell you – “Love is colorblind. Don’t be a fool.”
It took time for acceptance to grow in many wicked hearts. We are measured not by our intelligence; rather, our ignorance is what measures our thoughts. Change and time are assets that must take root, and like any tree – grow. Remember, from the tiniest of seed the mightiest of tree grows. All it takes is time.
So now twenty years later you sit, not in the mall – but from your living rooms. You watch another event unfolding before your eyes. The stares are the same. Some hold contempt. Most, just envy. A common theme held by all no matter what color.
Only, this time, it is a Nation that has become color blind. So, on this historic evening – let’s not think of the first black president, but let’s discover the meaning of being, completely and utterly – colorblind. It’s the kind of change only time can conquer. And, it’s about time….
CHANGE has happened. Hope is here.
Tomorrow is unlimited by what we've done today...
Tonight I will think of Lincoln - Fredrick Douglas, MLK - and all those who fought, both black and white - for what we are witnessing.
Peace
