Of course, being British, whether Obama raises American's taxes or not has no effect on me.
However some things will. The most exciting thing is perhaps the fact that he will be a president who believes in global warming and doesn't dismiss it as elitist , clever-clogs stuff. The USA - with 5% of the world's population - produces 25% of the world's carbon emissions. I know Obama is keen to create something like 5 million "green collar" jobs, introduce licences to polute in order to put a real cost on industries who refuse to become more environmentally aware. He is expected to announce a goal of cutting emissions by 80% by 2050 which is in line with Britain's plans, and more ambitious than the EU at 60%. Better to be too ambitious than too conservative in my opinion. Other policies off the top of my head I think are federal incentives to car manufacturers to design more economical cars.
Hopefully this is the end of American (government) attitudes to global environmental issues which resulted in a UN official crying during a conference at the US refusal to come to any kind of agreement over climate change.
