so I'm going to fly home for the first time ever and I've got a question.

I plan on solely taking my backpack with a few shirts and maybe one pair of pants (its only 4 days... and it is my old home, I've got clothes there) but the main thing is my laptop is going to come with me. Now if I put it in my back pack and put it on the xray belt thing would the xray bother it? I was kinda lookin up stuff and it said it wouldn't but the metal detector would scramble it.

But more I was curious about your guys' experience. Also (again, never flew) I bought my ticket online and i just print it out and hand it to the people at the gate, right? Or do I need to check in my backpack (carry-on)

I feel like an idiot for not knowing these simple flying rules, so go ahead and call me an idiot. But also hide answers in your name callings.

seeing as my 2nd home is an American Airlines plane... I think I can be of assistance

all laptops need to be removed from any bag what so ever and placed in a bin for the xray machine.... this will not damage it what so ever

you'll be fine just printing out your ticket confirmation and bringing that with you, chances are you won't need it, just hand the person behind the counter your I.D. - you can even check in yourself at home online if you want... but seeing as you are new you may wanna just let the gate agent give you your boarding pass... most counters have self check in machines right there and that's what I usually end up using

you are allowed to bring on one carry on (such as a rolling suit case under a certain size that'll fit in the over head bin) and a backpack or briefcase or purse type thing that'll fit beneath the seat in front of you. So with just your back pack you'll be fine to just hop on the plane with it and stash it wherever need be (you are way smart for not having to check a bag! I try to never ever check luggage anymore)

Just make sure you don't bring any "liquids" (i.e. shampoo lotion etc) over 3oz in size. aaaand any that are in your bag should be in a small ziploc baggie which you take out of your bag on the xray machine like you will your laptop and put in a bin.

So yeah to recap, >shoes off, >laptop out of bag, >liquids out of bag, >any jacket/sweater off and all in a grey bin... keep your boarding pass on you when you walk thru the metal detector and collect it all on the other side

yeah and leave the fireworks at home, they don't like them on planes

I'm a platinum member on American so I love it I get to check in priority and go thru the 1st class security line where 'most' people go thru quite swiftly yay - you get real used to the rig-a-ma-roll of the laptop out liquid thingy shoes off and blow thru it after awhile

Jenny has it covered.

Just a question: Are you traveling completely within the USA? If so, be SURE to have a valid photo ID. If you're not in the US or you're leaving the US I can't help.

You can also review your airline's website and the federal government's TSA (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/index.shtm) website if you're concerned about what constitutes a valid ID and what you can't carry or pack. I go to the TSA website all the time because rules change often and I always have questions -- "can I carry on a spiky umbrella? knitting needles?"

american security is insane. everytime they rip through my shit.

and word to the wise. dont wear a head-scarf when you go through LAX, that get's you a first class ticket to the special little security room where it's just you and some korean dude who is trying to check a 4 ft sq box made of styro-foam, held together with duct-tape and is leaking some sort of fluid that is pooling on the floor next to it.

other countries I usually get through without even bringing my baggie of liquids out of my bag or even having to take my shoes off.

oh, except nz because they give your shoes the spa treatment when you enter the country in case you had seeds or pollen on them.

I fucking hate flying.

You're good to go with the driver's license.

what's a spiky umbrella?
I bought an expensive, old fashioned umbrella on my last vacation. It was a bit on the large side. It wasn't the kind of compact umbrella that you could fold up in your suitcase. It never occurred to me that I would have trouble bringing it home but I got concerned and decided to put it in a long box and checked it instead of carrying it on.

Later, I think I found something on the TSA site saying that you can carry an umbrella on but my umbrella would have been more dangerous than most swords so I'm not sure if that meant every umbrella.

dude, check in online and print out a boarding pass! then you don't have to check in with real people or a machine or anything at the airport, you're good to go through security and straight to the gate.

Hopefully, you're not flying through Thailand. I heard they shut the airport down due to some serious protestor stuff going on today.

that's because not many people can afford to fly anymore.
and those that are able to can also afford lovely macbooks instead of the $499 pc lappy special from zellers.
