View Full Version : Ordering food when you're out that you could easily cook at home

Someone at work today was saying that they went out for breakfast on the weekend and ordered porridge! I was just thinking WTH...sure it had stewed fruit on top and a little cream and brown sugar, perhaps I wouldn't go to that extravagance at home but if I had a craving, it really wouldn't be that big a deal to stew some apple and rhubarb.
Whenever I go out to eat I always something I'd never make at home, it just seems like the fun of eating out to me.
What about you?

i agree. one of the worst dishes for this is nachos. i refuse to pay for nachos that are 4x price and one of the easiest dishes to make in the world. the only exception is if the tortillas are made in-house by the bar/restaurant. this is rare though. most places just buy horrid ready-made dorito-like bagged shite. ugh.
i rarely eat pasta in a restaurant either because i can make it better at home. unless they have some sort of super gourmet sausage or something in it. but.. unlikely.

natcho's may be the perfect example...I guess it depends...with pub fare I do order things I can easily do better such as shepherds pie,mac n cheese or any kind of sandwhich like reubens, clubhouse, burgers or steak sangy's...I'm inevitably critical when I order these...a sandwhich should alway's be better when made by someone else but it takes attention and love to make it right...I kid you not...with other things like greasy spoon breakfast, eggs, bacon, toast, after the night before I care not, just must consume...the only thing I really like ordering out that I make well are panini’s or calzone…cause then it's a strait contest...

I know of a couple places that make some damn good nachos that I probably couldn't replicate at home, and I've been known to cook some nachos.
I might go out for mexican food tonight, if so i'll post pictures.

i think it depends on the place really. i mean, normally i wouldnt do something like so, but if a place is known for its delicious nachos or what have, then i have no problems scarfing them up

once you buy chips, salsa, avacados, sour cream, cheese, peppers, olives, tomatoes etc nachos can get pretty pricey.
there is a ghetto ass vegetarian restaurant in vancouver called The Foundation that makes the best nachos ever, they even do multiple layers of cheese (just like I do at home) and you get the hugest platter (could easily feed 6 with ease) for only 11 bucks.
its a steal!
when I eat out I like to go for more ethnic food that I dont have all the spices at home to prepare always.
eg. indian, lebanese, japanese (sushi, tempura etc) and thai. DAMN YOU KAFFIR LEAVES ARE HARD TO FIND!
but yeah, if I get more regular fare i sometimes hate myself after cause i so could have made it better.

I just gained about four pounds reading that.
I can very rarely justify ordering pasta at a restaurant just because I know a kilogram of the stuff costs less than £1.

do it often, but at lunchtime during workdays. we have deals here at work where you buy tickets for restaurants worth 8 euros and only pay 3 euros for each of them. So, I make lunchtime easy and got to restaurants, even if it is a simple pasta dish. However, when the weekend it free, I tend to cook the meals myself to keep for eating during to week instead of going out. This weekend I cooked a pasta dish that I "sampled" from a microwave 2 minute dish thing (Fleury Michon) - and turned out very good and much less expensive of cousre.
pasta, pasta sauce, cook up some chicken to add, and add pine cone seeds that were roasted. easy to make and tastes great to me
