Are not much fun.

I need mine out but I've been waiting for my surgeon to have the time. It's torture. I can't eat properly and have been jamming down codeine/ibuprofen like crazy for the last two weeks. The dentist told me off and was like, "just eat soft food. here, take some penecillin". Hm.

So, um. Soft (but nutritious) food suggestions please. I've been trying but you can't live off baby food and soup! Also any kind of pain relief suggestions that don't involve drugs (yeah, I know) cause shit makes me sleepy at work.

Thank god they are out....I got drugs and they worked great!

meditation or slamming your thumb in the car door could help

^ haha, yeah - I'm almost at the point where I'd inflict pain on myself as a distraction! Getting drunk helps, but again, hangovers sorta get in the way of work and such.

I went to the dentist over a month ago, he told me I needed them out (derr), then waited two weeks for my x-rays, and last week I got my referral to the surgeon who can't see me for my initial consult till next week. Then who knows how long i'll be waiting to actually get the bastards out, and recovery and blahhhh...

drink nutritional drinks that old people drink. like slim fast, but with more calories and whatnot. or you could drink slim fast.

I still have my wisdom teeth, one's got a cavity, I should probably take care of that some day. I had a wonky tooth pulled last year, and I drank nutritional drinks and tea. not much else.

as for pain, have you tried topical stuff? like clove oil? clove oil works really well at numbing your tooth and gums, but be really careful because it burns the shit out of your tongue if you put too much on. I'm talking serious, awful burning pain. I'm having flashbacks just thinking of it. :(

I asked the dentist if it would help to put something on it, and he squinted at me and was like, naaaaahhh.

I've eaten a sunnyboy today.

you should gargle with salt-water to prevent any infections due to food getting into any of the crevices.

I should have had mine out about 2 years ago but I keep not wanting to take all that time off work potentially PLUS even though I have like 80% coverage it is still going to cost me a couple hundred bucks all said and done.

mine get infected on one side or the other every 6 months or so like clock-work. its retarded yet still I do nothing about it!

blahhhhhhhhhhh

Hoo wah, I woke up one day in spring 2006 and I couldn't close my mouth, my top right molar was sticking out so bad. I suffered through the day at uni and finally said fuck it, went to my dentist and said it was an emergency. He's a right solid dude so he squeezed me in between two other patients and gave me the needle. Well after five rounds of freezing I could still feel him reefing on it so I gripped the chair and told him to give 'er. I could hear the root coming out of my skull and everything, it was pretty low times.

I had the other three done all at once, about a year later, by a dental surgeon. I lived on yoghourt and soup for a week. Oh, and my mom would come by with a jar of chili, which is soft, nutritious, and can be eaten cold. I recommend chili.

I wonder if I've told this story here before? It seems like I might have.

When I get my wisdoms out in the spring, bone from them will be grafted and placed into the front of my gums, and leave me ten grand in the hole.

So HA!

My jaw was broken in 3 places and a main nerve got severed giving me no feeling in half of my face for a week when I got mine out.

My dentist said I wouldn't need to get them out. One is sticking out about a milimeter, the other a little under a quarter inch. Both on top. They don't bother me, or at least they wouldn't if I could stop poking them with my tongue when I'm bored.

A delectable slop known as Campbells concentrated chicken noodle soup. It's a semi-solid gelatinous log that you mix with water to make a double sized serve of the most peppery noodle soup around. Goes great with pepper, just don't try too hard to chew the noodles. I ate a can (that's actually two cans!) twice daily for about 2 weeks when I had my wisdoms out last year.

oof. I cracked a piece of my wisdom tooth off on a multigrain bagel yesterday. I should go in and get it fixed, but I've got a lot of things coming up, starting a new job, going to a wedding, performing, recording.... it doesn't hurt, it's just sharp. also I don't wanna pay to get it fixed :(

did you ever get your teeth out? how long did the dentist have you wait before you got them out?

ugh. I'm probably just going to have to get them all out. I should've gotten rid of them in high school when my parents were still paying my bills.

My dentist told me that my upper left wisdom tooth was still in my sinus cavity when I was 18 and wouldn't descend until I was 25. Like clockwork, it's starting to come down. And I don't want to freakin' go to the dentist. Brett's dad can take it out for free and just use shots, but I want to use anesthetic so I'd have to pay a bunch to go to an oral surgeon. Blech.

Dorothy, do you not have a dental plan? If so, call and check with your health insurance. My old health insurance in the states paid for 3 of my wisdom teeth to be taken out, all I had to pay was a $200 copay (which isn't bad, because it's around $2,000 without insurance).

dental insurance, ha! I could never afford such luxury. I go to the dental school, it's actually more pleasant than the real dentist and a third of the price. still, I'm guessing it'll cost me a grand. I got some other crap going on in there that needs to be taken care of. it just sucks because my whole life until the last couple of years I had very healthy teeth with few problems. and now everything's just coming to pieces. literally. :(

at least my gums are healthy. *knocks on wood*

Yeah, got em out at the start of December. All in all, with consults, dental appointments, xrays and work/hospital schedules, it took about 3 months to get them out. I couldn't eat properly for about two weeks, but the pain was pretty bearable for the most part. Course, I was dosed up to the eyeballs all day. I didn't work for a week, couldn't - all you want to do is sleep. I got weird blood pressure related tingly arms and legs as a result of not being able to eat - was like having pins and needles all day!

I had some minor gum issues, one took a long time to heal and had me worried for a bit. The worst bit is the pain you get in your teeth when you eat something hot or cold afterwards, that has been ongoing for me, highly annoying. Oh, and the numbness. That took about 48hours to go away, I was shitting myself thinking that my face would be numb for ever. The swelling and bruising took a long time to go too - just over 2 weeks. I had black eyes, thumb prints on my cheek and the sides of my chin went purple and then that awful mottled yellow color. Yuck. Now I can feel with my tongue how much bone they cut away to get the teeth out - it's pretty amazing how much they butcher your face, really.

I was lucky and have very generous parents who paid for my surgery - they have health cover and all up I think the four teeth extractions, anaesthesia (sp? lazy) and hospital costs set them back about $2500. They'll probably get about half that back in health cover/medicare. It was so worth getting them out though - the teeth were starting to cause me health issues. They were responsible for the mystery infections that had me on/off penecillin for months and the skin infections/bad breakouts I was getting.

Get a roundtrip ticket to Edmonton, I'm sure we can get Brett's dad to do it for ya! Tickets are at $400 right now, which is cheaper than a grand, and there's good skiing now. ;)

PS Bring Natalie.
