McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.

Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.

Another indictment charges state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. with profiting from his public office by accepting honoraria from prison management companies.

The indictments were first reported by KRGV-TV.

Yeah I saw this briefly too last night. It was reported sparingly by CNN and some local Texas stations. Last I heard is they were waiting for a 3rd district judge to sign off on the indictment that a grand jury had already ruled upon. They are calling it "domestic rendition".

Cheney and other indicted officials ordered to appear in court

WILLACY COUNTY - Vice President Dick Cheney and all other officials indicted by a Willacy County grand jury have been ordered to appear in court by the end of the week.

A visiting judge from Corpus Christi presided over today's hearing after Judge Migdalia Lopez removed herself from the case because she was also indicted.

The judge says he expects everyone to appear in court by Friday unless they petition for the right to waive arraignment, but that has to be done in writing.

District Attorney Juan Guerra must present himself in court Friday as well. He was not in court today, which the judge called a rarity.

it's nothing compared, but...

It smells really bad. The local press say that the outgoing county attorney has been doing some really dumbass publicity stunts. If that's true, it's sad that national media outlets are reporting the story, just because the headline looks funny.

This reminds me of that idiot prosecutor that Costner played in JFK.

We will have to wait until we see more to know whether this has legs.

Ouch, a Jim Garrison type? That can't be good.
