I wouldn't want to fly in one, but boy do I like to look at them zip about.

What do you guys think?

A couple of my wife's relatives died in one - I guess their son was flying it (he was in the airforce or something) and he just lost control.

I guess they're pretty tricky to pilot.

I’ve heli-hiked,ski’d and biked before…as well when I was an insane youth I rode 6 times to get into to tree planting sites …it’s a blast, the only thing I found disturbing was how freaking loud it is…however these day’s I’m a bit pissed at the black ops like police helicopter that circles around my neighbourhood every night…it’s spooky it operates with just one tail light, very creepy and Orwellian…plus it’s loud as hell…and it’s a bit ridiculous in a city that has just over a million people we have 2 cop helicopters and Toronto at over 4 million has none…

i like it in war movies when people jump out of helicopters (especially if they use ropes). or when they're running into a helicopter and one guy's standing in front, waving his arm and saying something like "get in the chopper!" and maybe there's some green smoke or something. that's pretty cool too but not as cool as jumping out.

it they could make a video game where all you did was jump out of and then scramble into helicopters, i'd probably buy it

In super smash bros as Solid Snake you can blast people with a grenade launcher from a helicopter while hanging on a rope ladder.

^^haha that attack is money.

A friend of mine is a commercial helicopter pilot in NZ. Loves it. I think you have to be a certain type of person to do it, personally. And he mentioned the challenging thing about the physics of the chopper is that there are so many complimentary forces influencing control of the vehicle, it only takes a minor minor minor disruption and you're fucked.

Sounds fun. I'd like to take a trip in one regardless.

They'd have to add an ability to fire two guns while jumping sideways through the air. Then I'm sold for sure.

I took a ride in a Blackhawk to tour blizzard damage in the state. The Gov was on board and we had to have an emergency landing. They sent a bunch of Hueys to pick us up. I have also flown in a weather helicopter.

My favorite rides have been in the Fuji blimp and a hot air balloon.

These are all advantages of being a former feature news shooter.

I'd like to add that helicopters are serious business, you know you just don't jump in and take off as a passenger...when I've riden recreationally you had to take a breathalizer before you went up...and the pre-flight instruction is intense, hand signals and such..you even do a dry run on the ground, engine off,as to the exit order...kinda like you see sky divers do before a jump you act it all out...and did you know it's impossible to resist the urge to duck while boarding or exiting?...I defy you to try...even though the only times the rotor blades can getcha is when they are powering off or on...therefore the hand signals...Harrison Ford,David Lee Roth,Kris Kristofferson and Clint Eastwood could all rescue you in a helicopter if they had to...all though you may not want David Lee to even try...

I'm watching truTV and saw a commercial for a new show that's about to air called "Maui Chopper" which is based on rescue choppers in Maui.

So far on the commercial, some choppers were putting out a blaze and some were rescuing people from a tidal wave.

Looks interesting, thought of this thread.

the other day the search and rescue helicopter (i live by the sea) swung by our house. my whole family (being a family of helicopter enthusiasts) dropped our cutlery (we were having lunch) and ran over to the window to catch a glimpse of its orange double-bladed wonder.

as is customary every time we see the search and rescue helicopter we began musing on why it may be out.

one time there was a bank robbery and the robbers were hiding on the beach and they used the search and rescue helicopter to search for them.

I've been in quite a few helipcopters, and I can confirm that they are pretty decent. Blackhawks are the most fun, unfortunately I didn't get to ride in a Lynx which combined with crazy British pilots are supposed to be the best. Flying in Basrah over the rivers, sometimes the doorgunners have little contests to see who can touch the water whilst flying.

Goddammit, roosta. I bumped this thread for you!

I bought a remote control helicopter for $20 at BJ's. It's a piece of crap, you can't control the steering on it, it does 360's and I'm upset with it. What do you expect for 20 bones though.

So, I'm going to come out of my pocket and get at least a $200 one and hopefully I'll be happy with it.
