I wonder if there's a good book on the sociology of government conspiracies -- what makes for a good one, etc. We tend to think of them as a relatively new phenomenon egged on by TV shows like the XFiles, but they go way back.

For instance, my mom was a kid when FDR was president. My mom believed all kinds of crazy shit about FDR. I didn't know my mom's dad, and there is evidence that he was a nut. But from years of cross-examining my mom about where her ideas re FDR came from, it seemed that they largely came from some book she read in college (in the early 1940s). The story about how he knew the Japanese were going to hit Pearl Harbor and did nothing because he wanted to get involved in WWII is an old one that's been widely reported, but my mom had all kinds of other ones that I can't remember as well now. I do remember that she blamed him for events that happened before he was even president.

The Pearl Harbor conspiracy is a lot like the 9/11 ones today. For some reason, people are more willing to believe that the government is actively plotting against us than that there are some individual government employees with limited imaginations who underestimated our enemies.

By the way, my mom was an intelligent woman who read a variety of sources, so it was even more puzzling when every once in a while she would buy some dumb story hook line and sinker.

Why is it always years later the speculation and conspiracy begins? Why not challenge news as it happens? I think that is what frustrates most folks about conspiracy style posts. The fact that someone decided not to prosecute a case doesn't mean there was hanky panky. Prosecutors and other law enforcement officials have to prioritize all the time and they have to operate within the jurisdiction of their offices. Government officials are supposed to exercise judgment. They have to refuse to pursue all kinds of possible violations of the law and spend their money where it might have a positive impact.

In the USA, the federal government trumps the state government. There are tons of good reasons for state government to refuse to fund a special prosecution with little hope of success. The fact that someone decided not to prosecute a case doesn't mean there was hanky panky. Prosecutors and other law enforcement officials have to prioritize all the time and they have to operate within the jurisdiction of their offices. Government officials are supposed to exercise judgment. They have to refuse to pursue all kinds of possible violations of the law and spend their money where it might have a positive impact.

In the USA, the federal government trumps the state government. There are tons of good reasons for state government to refuse to fund a special prosecution with little hope of success. i have built my concepts and perception on what i have learned. over the years i have learned a lot about america. and from this i have learned to trust my sense of what is possible. when i look at stories i am open to being wrong. but when i am confronted with sources, like all of those in this movie, who are legitimate and trustworthy, based on their accounts, relationships and positions, i cannot deny that they are being honest. im guessing you havent watched the movie either.

the difference being, yeahwho, docu, bob and the others, perhaps yourself included, are not going to take the time to watch the movie because they dont want to. they dont have that drive for knowing truth. they dont want to "waste time" with conspiracy theories. thats the difference.

the presumption that something is conspiracy, so i wont touch it is what we are talking about.

the openness to facts, stories and resources is something completely different.
