Robert Gates: Obama's Defense Secretary

Huffington Post l November 19, 2008

Update, 11/25 7PM
Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elections/2008/11/25/defense-secretary-gates-job-obama/) reports:

There was very strong support for Gates among Democrats, said one Democratic source in the Senate whose boss was intimately involved in bringing Obama and Gates together to see if they were compatible...

Gates will continue to preside over two U.S. wars, in Iraq and Afghanistan, that Bush launched as part of the larger war on terror.

There are several issues on which Gates and Obama disagree, including missile defense. Gates supports placing a missile defense system in Europe, but Obama already has suggested that he won't sign off on it until the technology has been proven capable.

Update, 11/25 5PM

Politico (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15986.html) now reports that Gates has agreed to stay on as defense secretary into President-elect Barack Obama's first term. They also report that the news will be announced early next week along with other national security nominations, including the pick of Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.

Update, 11/25 4PM

ABC (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/11/gates-cabinet-a.html) now reports that the Gates selection is "a done deal":

Gates, while a registered independent, has served numerous Republican administrations. President George W. Bush nominated Gates to replace the Donald Rumsfeld after the 2006 midterm elections, when the war in Iraq was spiraling out of control.

The former Eagle Scout is expected to be rolled out immediately after the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend as part of a larger national security team expected to include Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, as Secretary of State; Marine Gen. Jim Jones (Ret.) as National Security Adviser; Admiral Dennis Blair (Ret.) as Director of National Intelligence; and Dr. Susan Rice as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Disappointed to hear this, even if it's likely he'll only be around for a year. They couldn't find anyone better to do the job?

I just read where he's going to retain Bush as president.

he's just keeping him in his cabinet. whenever obama needs to make a decision he'll just consult bush and do the opposite of whatever he suggests

...this just in... sources say an announcement next week will confirm the position, obama will personally exhume nixon and prop his remains on a porch swing at the white house, where nixon's skeleton will officially become the secretary of scary.

He's a smart guy. This is probably his best chance of getting reelected in 2012. If it works he's good. If it fails, it wasn't his guy. Can't change horses mid stream, etc. I just wish I knew more about this Jim Jones guy because he's apparently getting the job that matters -- what an unfortunate name.

I can't say I'm surprised. It's a clusterfuck and who wants to take it on. I was positive there wouldn't be a big change. I hope you guys won't be too disappointed. Clinton pissed me off before he was sworn in. I doubt that will happen with me and Obama because I knew he was no liberal. :p

I'm really sick of hearing about Lincoln and Kearns Goodwin though. JFK had a team of the supposed best and brightest and he's one of my least favorite presidents. It depends on how they all work together and whether they plot and scheme or get along. I'm encouraged that Obama has the guts to surround himself with strong willed people. I'm worried that he will get paralyzed or that they'll all back bite each other. We shall see. And this will make the history books more interesting in 10-20 years.
