moot's use of the word local made me think of something..
is there any local dish that is particularly associated with your area? by area i don't mean country - i mean city or district. mostly, i find, this is associated with fast foods or snack foods, but it doesn't have to be.
for example, chips and cheese is the most popular take away piece of unhealthy crap in glasgow. in edinburgh it is chips and special sauce. why this sauce is special (it's sort of a watered down brown sauce) i will leave it for you to decide. but it is certainly unique to edinburgh and you can't get it anywhere else.
i don't know what the norm is here in bristol yet but there are certainly a lot more pasties than normal. errghhh. i hate pasties :( don't tell brodie.

This is beef country so it's Steak Houses galore...from the super upperend chic styles to the western themed, hay bales and corral types,to the chain franchises like "The Keg"...especially downtown theres probably 30 Steak joints competing for the tourist and suit and tie,oil and gas guy's business...it's in the "culture" you take someone out for a steak and a drunk when they come to town...

Mmmmmmhhhh Schnitzel. :D
If there was an Advent calendar with Schnitzel in it - I would buy it!
In Berlin we have Currywurst (I don't like it too much though).
In my old hometown we have the best cordial ever called Hiller Moorbrand with 40% alcohol in it. Way better than Jägermeister. :D
Theres a Pasty shop in Bolton called 'Ye olde pasty shoppe' and they are some of the tastiest pasties around.
As far as other specialties go I can only think of Black pudding from Bury market. Really nice with a shed load of english mustard (y)

i can't remember what a cheesy western is, but that place smells so gross i have to hold my nose when we walk past. UGH. it amazes me how many people love that place.

we put french fries on EVERYTHING. the main things are sandwiches (primanti's (http://www.primantibros.com/)) or on (usually steak or chicken) salads.
the big mac was also "invented" in my region.
screw being healthy!

"No self respectin' Southerner uses instant grits. I take pride in my grits."
Just wait til you try Pomello. Sweet as a sugarcane and as addictive as another type of caine: You'll love it.

testicles. They are usually peeled, coated in flour, pepper and salt, sometimes pounded flat, then deep-fried.
man o man, just reading that makes me cross my legs.

hot dogs and deep dish.
...but if you ever get a hot dog here...whatever you do...don't ask for ketchup.
why's that? Surely ketchup is a must!?!?!

Today I had Wienerschnitzel actually, it was pretty good. Although it's not really a local thing, or even that Austrian. They drink Almdudler in the mountains, it's a soft drink made from random ass herbs. They also have Speckknödel which is dumplings with bacon and also Speckknödelsuppe (in soup) which I think is a regional thing in Tirol.

I don't understand its appeal, or what makes it so damn special... but people around here will rant and rave about their Coney Island hot dogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coney_Island_hot_dog). There are like a million Coney Island restaurants/diners in damn near every place you visit too.
Eh, I'll stick with my home-cookin', I think.
I guess Detroit has some special variety of pizza, influenced from Sicily, that is supposed to be really local to the area. It's a square type dish with thick sides (but not deep dish - that's Chicago, y'all) that is, apparently, ridiculously good. I've yet to try that.

I just saw this place on man vs. food, looks awesome. I also have a mild crush on the Jew host.
