wow! that was great!

pardon me if i don't sound beastie fan enough... but those extra rhymes they through in... like the part about adrock never wearing bicycle shorts and something about nintendo... is that from the demos? or was that something special for the show? is there an MP3 of the audio? that would've made a really great extended 12" mix

Just a little something special for the show... and Mr. Don Cornelius.

Props to the YouTube person that posted it!

Excellent!!! Was it just me or did it seem like they were lip-synching a previously recorded live track? Like they recorded a version earlier in the day and then lip-synched for the show.

Or was it just the shitty audio and video on youtube?

Anyway you slice it though, that is a great piece of Beastie History right there.

"Performers who appear on Soul Train generally lip-sync their songs to its recorded version, though several have chosen to sing their songs live. Each guest usually performs twice on each program; after their first number, they are joined by the program host on-stage for a brief interview."

They should just release that Don Cornelius song already.

@Micodin: They probably just recorded the live vocals that day, like they do on (some) award show performances, and lip-synched over that. It's pretty clearly not the album vocal nor instrumental.

I asked Mike D. to play Shadrach at the Philadelphia Gala Event Show, and I believe Seth asked for Rhyme The Rhyme Well. Mike D. paused for a second and said something like, "Man... We haven't played that one in a while".

They gave us our special request "for our boys from Maine" and played High Plains Drifter. Heh.

I'm gonna go on record and say that they performed Shadrach live. There is no way they could of got their vocals lip synced correct with Mike D. doing his "oh's" and whatnot. There was a couple of MCA ad libs that was live.

Shit was done live. Just saying.

MCA says "To my style" but you can only hear Mike (27 seconds).
Adrock raps "Not how you play that game etc" but stops saying anything partway through and his voice is still heard (34 seconds).
You could put these things down to syncing errors but they're in perfect rhythm when the beat changes at 2:28 (stopping right on time). If you're talking about Mike's "Oh", he says something before it and nothing comes out. Even when you hear it, it doesn't look quite right.

At the first beat change sounds the vocal sounds layered, like their mics might be partly up, but it's not so unusual that they did in fact record the vocal live that day and then performed over the top of it. Otherwise it was fucked up equipment and they re-shot it (like at the Hip-Hop Honours).

EDIT: can someone else rate this thread its rightful 5 stars please?

1. MCA starts off with stutter. Rid-rid-riddle me...

2. At 1:20 MCA say "and I Know"

3. During the Don Cornelius part... you can hear the crowd chant back when the point their mics in the crowd.

4. At 3:35 Mike D. proves it's live by dancing next to the Soul Train Dancers.

5. 3:49 Adrock's "Ah, Yeah!" was definitely live.

6. Adrock's "Yeah, Boy!" at the end defiantly was live as well.

It's an old video, so the synch with YouTube might not be right. But, those mics were on. You can hear it through decent headphones.

Either way it's a dope performance. Some of it might be lip synch... but those mics were also on as well. Agree to disagree.

Thing is, you can't actually see most of the things you're talking about, so it makes no sense to use them as proof against lip-synchs. The crowd noise would be picked up on boom mics and such, wouldn't it? And yes those mics were on, but I dunno how good headphones are going to tell you what time of day they were on. If you knew it was going to say "Aw yeah" at some point, then you would just expectantly hold the mic up to your mouth for a bit, just like he did.

Point is, it was live at some point, but they're performing over the top of it. Like Laver originally said, and once again Laver is on the money. So we can agree to disagree, but Laver's right. Check "Ride the Wave of Fate" at like 4:13 for the final bit of proof.

Yeah it's a dope performance, anyway. So glad to finally see it. Definitely not trying to be rude here, just fulfilling my destiny as a nerd.

real cool to see this rare performance from the PB days.

regarding the sound - something you guys have to realize, is in post production, when they are editing the show's sound, they do whatever they want with the sound they have. so if they have a performance done earlier (for good sound), and then a live performance as well....it's likely they are mixing them together to give the best audio track possible - not just using one or the other. so they aim for something that captures the live performance energy, and can correct mistakes or audio problems with the earlier recorded version.

it's a method similar to how they shoot with more than one camera - so they have a bunch of different footage to piece together the final edit.

i remember when they played this song...my dad was flipping channels and stopped on Soul Train for a minute, my ears perked up when I heard Don Corneilus say "beastie boys". this was around early 1990 i believe. anyhow, this is the first time my dad realizes they were white guys.

Fair enough. I think it's live, just the synch is messed up. I've been trying to think...why would they bother recording it earlier live? Just to replay it? I'm not being funny, I'm just generally curious. Surely if Soul Train were that bothered by potential swearing etc then they'd just make em mine to the studio version. Do you think the beat switches are pre-done as well? How about Hurricanes mic? There's bit like 4.14 where MCA seems behind, but there's too many bits so I just think it's out of synch. They'd be hard pressed to remember everything added if perfroming a live version they'd only just done on the same day.

We'll never know I guess anyway, will we Mr Yauch?

Hey everyone:

Dan LeRoy here -- long time, no post. (The PB reissue news, courtesy of the indispensible ninthbeastie, brought me in from the cold!)

Sorry for another shameless plug for my 33 1/3 book, but there is a mention of the back story behind this appearance. According to Max Perlich, the Beasties did record a special version of "Shadrach," complete with Don Cornelius references, to mess with him -- because they wanted to do the song live but weren't permitted.

I believe the quote was that Mr. Cornelius was "freak(ing) on the spot."
In fact, he actually stopped the taping at first, according to Max, because he believed the vocals were live. But they reportedly told Cornelius that the newly-recorded vocals were part of the original version of the song, on PB, "so they got away with it."

It sure is great finally seeing the clip! Hope everyone is having a great holiday, and best wishes for 2009.

Great performance, seems to be live. I just listened to the PB commentary track where they discuss "Hey Ladies" and whether they had performed it live or not. They seemed to agree that they did and when they did it was on Soul Train. I think it was actually this Shadrach performance they were thinking of. They go on to state that the Fresh Prince came to see them on the set after the performance and said "You guys still got it!"

Dan Leroy's book on PB is amazing. I've had it for awhile and just started reading it again. So many cool and funny things on it. Things that stood out so far on this read is them pranking Bret Michaels from the glam metal band Poison by approaching him and asking what room he was staying in. And then charging stuff to his room to the shock and dismay of their A & R man. (they were apparently living at the same hotel for awhile)

Setting up a velvet rope and creating a private party within an MTV awards after party was also great (attracting the attention of Arsenio and Cyndi Lauper amongst others)

Another hilarious part is when they (Beastie Boys, Dust Bros & Matt Dike) decided to have open try outs for potential music video dancers before they had even really started the record. They invited hundreds of hot girls to dance in bikinis to instrumental tracks while they sat at a table "drunk with huge joints and stacks of money in front of us"

Pretty hilarious stuff
