Sean Penn is a 10. The movie is a 6-7. I loved it while I was watching it but it left me soon afterwards.
I liked the way the director used historical footage and mixed it with the footage shot for the movie. It worked to put my head in the 70s.
I suspect that other people got more out of it than I did. When I was leaving the theater, I heard other attendees saying really dumb things which made me realize that they know absolutely nothing about modern american history.

It was very well done, very very very by-the-book stuff. Some of the photography was bad, which helps it blend in with the archive stuff,
I know, but still.
The cast was good, though now and again Penn or Hirsch got pretty fucking close to parody. But then, so to queens, so...
*shrugs*
Found myself checking my watch way too often. Milk himself wasn't very interesting to me, which basically just left the cause itself, and
as much as the story centered on that, there was a serious lack of urgency.
Too bad. I'm definitely a Van Sant fan, but this wasn't much better than good.
7.25/10

^ I don't know if you can call something bad if it's intentional.
I thought the film looked great, but I also was checking my watch a bit. everyone put in good performances, I even liked emile hirsch who I normally hate. I think it was the glasses, he had to overcome his overuse of eyebrow acting or something.
there were a few things that made me cringe:
sean penn's wrinkly neck and face when he's supposed to be 39/40
the wretched attempt at long hair and a beard...which was so poorly faked that it took me almost completely out of the story and had me guessing when the makeover would happen.
the opera stuff. it was so heavy handed...at the end, especially...it threw any reality and the human emotion I had for the character out the window because it basically just screamed "THIS IS A MOVIE! CHECK OUT THE SYMBOLISM!" but he was a real person, not a character. so I thought it was weird.
:/

agreeeeeeeeeeeed
I gave it 8/10
I knew nothing of the guy and of american civil rights in this area.
I must say, Penn was great. For some1 who has no clue, it was a good two hours spent as I learnt some stuff and was entertained.
