I can't help but be just as happy as I am pissed off about this guy, Rod Blagojevich Governor of Illinois. He is and has been obviously a threat and corrupt politician his whole life. Business as usual is coming to an end. I'm pissed because it shows what lows our elected officials will sink to, but happy he was nabbed and being hopefully to justice. Maybe, just maybe there is some change coming our way.

Here is a nice Op/Ed piece from the NYTimes today (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/10/opinion/10egan.html?hp)

Roll Over, Abe Lincoln

“He’s kryptonite,” one state representative called him in a Chicago Magazine profile last February. “Nobody wants to get near him.”

But it wasn’t until Tuesday, and the filing of a 76-page criminal complaint centered around the auctioning of a Senate seat, that we got a full X-ray of politics at its sickest.

chicagotribune.com has some better information, probably because they were directly involved on account of rod trying to shake the place down. that times article was awkwardly written (no offense yeah).

I was going to make a blagojevich (blah-goy-vich, for those who are struggling with the pronunciation) thread, but I thought nobody would care.

my mom called me and was like, "your governor is a bad guy". and I was like, "I know, I've been talking about it for awhile". I guess nobody listens until they're an arrest.

anyway, the guy is a weasel, pretty much everyone hated him. he's been living in a fantasy world where he thinks he's a king and can do whatever he wants. I hope he steps down.

sucks that obama has to be tied to him, however loosely.

yeah I read the Chicago Tribune account, it sucks. They're too directly involved in the man's dealings, they write like rejected pimply faced 14 year olds trying to get over not getting to second base.. Offense taken.

Blagojevich (blah-goy-vich) is the new Ahmadinejad (ah-mah-DIH-nee-zhahd).

alright alright, I just though that times article seemed awkward to read and a little fluffy. sorry.

as for why people voted for him, it was because he was a democrat and the previous governor was a republican and corrupt (he's in jail now). blagojevich seemed like an amiable fellow who wanted to "end corruption". ha. and he has done some good things...it just turns out that he wanted/got money or favors in return for doing them.

at this point, I'm of the opinion that he's delusional (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inLpxuO_lYo)

there's a local news piece on t.v. right now where they're talking to mrs. blagojevich's family and they're like, "that's not how she is, she's nice and wonderful". but...she's on tape swearing up a storm and plotting schemes right along with ol' rod. I'm sorry, but catching somebody off guard is usually a good indication of what they're really about.

Just stirring the pot, your have been an excellent contributor to the BBMB general political discussion. Sort of miss the blatant off color remarks of some of the others who usually have some very good zingers.

I count you as in good standing in the mutual respect society here.

This Blago is one of the more amazing political figures I've ever witnessed. Looks like he's planning on burning out rather than fading away. Great press and a great tragic figure, in both the drama and comedy sense.

Fuck now their going to try and force Blago out (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/12/12/ST2008121202724.html), in a way I really like his complete indifference towards everyone in America. He's got game even after the whistles been blown and the parking lot is empty.

His ability to provide effective leadership has been eliminated, and the state government is paralyzed," Lisa Madigan (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/video/2008/12/12/VI2008121202257.html?sid=ST2008121202724) said in a motion requesting Blagojevich's removal on disability grounds.

In other corrupt politician news, checkout this Queens Assemblyman Anthony Seminerio (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/queens/2008/12/10/2008-12-10_queens_assemblyman_anthony_seminerio_ind.html), he's been indicted in $1M favor-selling scam.

They should of indicted him for wearing that tie (http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2008/12/11/amd_seminerio.jpg).

Don't know if this has been mentioned...but sadly, this is Illinois' second consecutive Governor to go down in shame. Former Gov. Ryan is currently serving a corruption sentence in prison.

I'm still pissed that blagojevich made it so seniors can ride public transportation for free when they didn't even ask for it. the whole mess created another budget deficit and now I gotta pay an extra 25 cent a ride starting soon. stupid seniors and their getting on at one stop and getting off at the next, bein all slow and shit, fartin up the place. f that noise.

The most emailed article of the past week for the NYTimes is this finely written Op/Ed by Frank Rich (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/14/opinion/14rich.html?em); Two Cheers for Rod Blagojevich

The Republican partisans cheering Fitzgerald’s prosecution of a Democrat have forgotten his other red-letter case in this decade, his conviction of Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney’s chief of staff. Libby was far bigger prey. He was part of the White House Iraq Group, the task force of propagandists that sold an entire war to America on false pretenses. Because Libby was caught lying to a grand jury and federal prosecutors as well as to the public, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. But President Bush commuted the sentence before he served a day.

I still am really impressed by Blago's indifference to the whole affair, but his strategy so far is working. Oblviousness to this degree puts the republicans on guard. Lets hear it for the home team! Two Cheers!!!!

Your home team is every party in the system. If you think otherwise you're a follower and part of no team at all. Just yourself.

I'm being a smart ass. You know that don't you? Hope you had a good Christmas.

I do actually admire his ability to stand up and fight for himself. Even though it appears every single claim being put upon him is fact, it still hasn't been proven in a court of law.

"I will fight. I will fight. I will fight until I take my last breath"

It's a feeding frenzy (http://www.examiner.com/x-268-Right-Side-Politics-Examiner~y2008m12d25-Blagojevich-seeks-subpoenas-for-Obama-aides?comments=true)

Cool. Yeah, Christmas was great. Thanks. Hope yours was good too.

Our gov is such scum. But it's IL, so we're kinda used to shit like this. Just makes ya wonder when people will say enough is enough. I mean we all knew this years ago, but everyone said "They all do it". There's no dignity in our political system anymore. Here or anywhere else. It's all about money and how much you can give your local politician.

Anyway, at least he's gonna be gone soon.

Seriously, this is getting beyond surreal.

Defiant Illinois Governor Names Pick for Obama Seat (Defiant Illinois Governor Names Pick for Obama Seat)

“As governor I am required to make this appointment,” a self-assured Mr. Blagojevich said at a news conference in Chicago. “If I don’t make this appointment, then the people of Illinois will be deprived of their appropriate voice and vote in the United States Senate.”

“I am absolutely confident and certain that the U.S. Senate is going to seat Mr. Burris, with his unquestioned integrity, extensive experience, and long history of public service,” he added, describing him as “a wise and distinguished senior statesman of Illinois.”

But in a letter released Tuesday afternoon, Senate Democrats reiterated their view that Mr. Blagojevich should not choose Mr. Obama’s replacement, even though, they said, they had “respect” for Mr. Burris’s public service.

“Under these circumstances, anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus,” the senators declared in their statement. “It will ultimately not stand."

Now this story is really getting fun!

Why is this guy still governor?

If this had happened in Australia he would have been forced to step down within an hour of allegations being made public.

Dorothy Wood
01-03-2009, 03:41 AM
he's insane, that's why he's still governor. any normal person would step down, but he's not going to, so they have to do a bunch of shit to prove the allegations that he's denying. honest to god, he is cuckoo bananas.

but you know, there's a lot of legal mumbo jumbo and red tape to get through before they can prove the bananas part.

the worst part is that this is going to cost the state a lot of money for no reason. he's such an asshole.

It IS surreal. Seriously if this happened here the Prime Minister and head of their political party would DEMAND their resignation for bringing their party into disrepute.

Only in America

Or possibly South America

Do you know if demanding could actually make the person resign though?

You have to prove things in a court of law here and I'm fairly certain it's the same way in your country.

Sure, senior politicians demand resignations from others all the time, i.e. a Premier of a state (equal to your governor) demanding resignations from minsters in their cabinet for alleged misdeeds. Has happened many times. In this case whoever is the head of the Democratic Party should demand Blagojevich's resignation and order him to step down while the charges are being investigated. He cannot be an effective and trustworthy governor while all of this is going on.

If Blagojevich had any dignity or conscience he should resign immediately for bringing shame to the Democratic Party and the state of Illinois.

see, he doesn't have any dignity or conscience.

everyone is demanding that he step down, but he's going to drag this thing out as long as he possibly can. he is pleased as punch that the whole world knows his name. he's completely delusional. but facts is facts, you need to prove guilt in a court of law.

it's pretty unfair to say "only in america", because things like this rarely ever happen. if it was a common occurrence, you wouldn't even know about it right now.

oh my god, I'm listening to his speech, or closing remarks or whatever at his impeachment trial. I don't think I've heard anyone talking so long without saying anything. he's such a drama queen. he told a story about an immigrant single mom that had nothing to do with him. it was retarded.

he tried to end his speech with a flourish and seemed like he was expecting clapping or cheering...but he was met with silence. hilarious.

I'm interested to hear what the rebuttal is.

bye bye blagojevich.

whoa, I've been listening to this trial all day long on the radio and it's way more emotional than I thought it would be. it was really interesting to hear everyone in the state government speak. I should've written down the names of the people I thought were cool.

the vote was unanimous to impeach. man, that was intense. more intense than I thought it'd be.

6 hours I've been listening. I am a nerd.

now they have to vote on whether or not he can ever hold office again.
