I don't go to the malls before Christmas, not even the main shopping streets.
I hate the crowds, the hassle and everything.
If I need to get any Christmas presents I either do them myself, get them from charity shops or from handy friends.
As it happens I don't need to give away presents anyway (except BBMB secret Santa....)

Do you think it's OK for someone who's well-off to shop at the Salvation Army or Thrift stores?
Isn't that a violation?
I'm not trying to say I'm well-off, just more of a general question.

Why not? I'm not poor-poor but i can't be splashing the cash too far and i totally go shop in the tat shops. I mean i'm not gonna find everything i need there but it's supporting charity as well as anything else and someones gotta buy it,right??
The morning BBC news today did a thing about the rise of the pound shops here-everybody trying to squeeeeeze the most outta that squilla!!

Yes, certainly. I buy lots of stuff for my daughter at our local charity shops. Kids grow out of clothes so fast, and why should I always buy her 'new' clothes? This year and last I have got some of her toys for Christmas there as well - she is just as happy to have a "pre-owned" Mr. Potatohead for the time being, there are many years ahead for her to start demanding everything be straight from the box. Plus, environmentally, I just can't see a good argument for buying loads of new plastic toys, or clothes, for that matter.

We could now build a wall from all the video cassettes we get for the kids from charity shops-also great as my eldest son grows about an inch a week and i seem to spend a lot of time trying to get clothes long enough for his orang-utang like limbs without having to remortgage. Oh and he's still not bothered about brand-new and he's 7 so i would say you got many years happy shopping for toys there yet!

Why should it be a violation to buy from those even if you're well-off?
For me it's more of recycling stuff, and usually I find way more interesting things in those shops than anywhere else.
Especially when it comes to jewelry and bric-a-brac (and haberdashery, hint hint peachy!) those places are goldmines.
Also they give their profits to people in need so I'm contributing that way as well.
And also they sell loads of Fair Trade goods as well, which are perfect gifts (make a gift basket out of coffee,
honey and chocolates and I bet it's appreciated).
elderly people at the mall = EPIC FAIL

Teenaged kids usually don't ask for gift baskets for Christmas, but I appreciate your resourcefullness.

When the local stores put out all the Halloween stuff, AND the Christmas stuff in the middle of September, it was on, and they weren't getting my money. How dare they F*** up Halloween..
When I got done with my Christmas shopping there was a pile of beer bottles at my feet. No hassle, just me sitting in front of the computer shopping happily away. Boxes started showing up at work last week and I don't have to deal with all the greedy, rude, run you over in the parking lot with their car, or in the store with a cart people.

Fuck ordering Christmas presents from the internet too.
1. I'm not paying S&H and stressing out worrying if it's gonna show up undamaged and in time for something I can buy at a store that's two miles down the road. I've had it happen to me before where I ordered stuff from Amazon and it didn't arrive in time for Christmas and I vowed never again.
ALSO, most places run 30% to 50% off sales this time of year that you may or may not get from the internet.
2. I don't mind the crowds too much. I just don't like that EVERY store I go to it's the same barrage of questions at the counter, "Join our frequent shopper Club" BS.
