keep a log of things that happen to you that are funny or poignant. don't try to be too clever. simple is best, true things are better than made up things. lately, the most successful ideas and characters are based on real people and improvisation.

gahh beastieboysbaby I swear you are my clone.
There's a really great book called How To Write a Movie in 21 Days that I would recommend. It helps kick you in the butt as far as modivation and really figuring out what story you want to tell, etc.
Also a great modivating book is called the War of Art. Kind of about getting over procrastination...good stuff.

My buddy writes screenplays, so I can ask him a few things about it next time I see him.
For now, I can tell you I know he uses some computer program called Final Draft that helps him with the formatting and stuff. I guess it's not necessary, but it makes it a lot easier.
My personal advice would be to start carrying around a small notepad to write ideas/stuff in when it occurs to you. I've been doing that for a while and it comes in useful. Of course, you never know when an idea you have might actually be of use, but when you're looking through it once or twice, you might find the perfect thing.

the best thing to do is don't buy no fucking books, don't go get all the fresh gear, JUST START DOING WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. MAKE MOVIES.
you can start reading and buying clapboards, director chairs and smart-looking books later.

I don't agree on not buying any books or anything. I think you are right and that the best thing is to just do it, but having some guidance will ease the pain a bit. As far as actually making them, yeah, there's not much you can do but just make them, but screenwriting is a bit of a different story.

I'd like to add just have fun. Don't worry about making the things you are working on "perfect". I know when I just relax and enjoy the creation process my work is always better.
Plus, you're just a kid. Life is about having fun and seeing what floats your boat.
Good luck kiddo. (y)

Spend a weekend watching shit films and write down why you thought they were shit.
Then never use these reasons in anything you do.

Thats awesome. Good luck!
Get yourself a cheap handicam. then get out there and just make some short 5 min films with yr friends. Sooo much fun. And you learn a heap.
Then if any of your friends are in a band or group or whatever convince them to let you make a free music vid for them.
Thats pretty much how I started my illustrious film career

if you are really motivated, start looking for grants, scholarships, contests,etc...
anything that gives you access to money or equipment.
there are tons of competitions you can enter these days where the public votes online. 24 hour film competitions, etc...
make a video and submit it to Funny or Die, se how you are gauged by the online community.
get an internship like someone said, and eventually you should move away from home to a city that has a presence in the world of film/tv.
look for production companies in your area(austin?) and reach out to them in a professional manner. be professional.
lastly, get on a movie or tv set. if you are an extra or a production assistant, or a hair and make up girl, no matter what, you will learn something.
don't give up. remember, SAYING you want to be a director is one thing. everybody wants to be an actor or director. do you have talent, drive, and dedication?
the cream always rises to the top.

Yeah first time I was on a proper set for a proper film I was amazed at how much stuff I learned, even in the first hour.
