Hi everyone.
A while back I decided to have a shot at remastering a couple of tracks from PB since many people (myself included) wish the album could benefit with a touch up in the audio quality dept.
I decided to work on Car Thief made some progress but gave up. This week however I decided to continue the project and I now feel I have something decent to preview to everyone.
In order to make this I had to literally, re-sample all the songs the Dust Bros. sampled to make the song originally, EQ and pitch change everything to ensure it was an exact double of the original. I say exact double...its never going to be 100% identical to the original, but I'm sure you'll appreciate the effort. One major problem I had was that I couldn't find a clear sample of the beat. As a result I had to recreate it as best as I could using the worst software avaliable. Maybe someone with reason or fruitloops could do a better job for me?
I also decided to make a discrete 5.1 mix of the song. I've just tried it and I'm pleasantly surprised with the result, so hopefully you'll share my enthusiasm.
Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and has taken bloody hours to do lol. Theres somethings that need finishing (the end of the song for instance) but at 90% complete, its good enough for a preview.
If anyone wants a 5.1 mix, I can upload it in WMA5.1
Heres the normal re-master though http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S2KJ3W2F
Remember, I need feedback so let me know what you think needs changing. Hopefully there will be a Shake Your Rump and 3 Minute Rule remaster asap (5.1 too)

ps. why does everyone think Car Thief samples Funkadelic - I Bet You? It's actually the Jackson 5 cover that the song samples.

I can definitely hear the differences. It's missing the sample right after the hook though, and it sounds like you changed the snare drum.

Yeah, as I said it isn't perfect but it's getting there. I'm having trouble getting a snare sample that sounds exactly the same. I'm hoping someone on the forum can help me out.
Anyone?

This is a more than decent effort.
I know you said you couldn't find a good snare, but I think you have it to high in the mix regardless. Once they start rapping it doesn't bother me as much, but it's very abrasive at the intro. Like I cringed when it comes in.
I bet you could find a decent snare sample on a drum machine, A jazz or funk drum might work.
Your also missing the "I'm A Farmer" sample after "I'm a writer/ A poet/ A genius I know it/ I don't buy cheeba I grow it"
Your bass line is awesome. Most of the vocal interplay is spot on & the sheer amount of work that you've put into this is wicked impressive. If I walked into a bar that was playing this version I wouldn't notice the differences [ as long as I came in after the snare intro ha ha] I can't wait to hear the finished result. keep it up man!

Wow. I am impressed.
The snare is definitely a problem, but other than that this is pretty amazing.
Can't wait to hear the finished product, keep it up!(y)

Outstanding job. I liked to see/hear you re-work the full version of Desperado (from the Licensed to Ill era) using the original samples to boost their sound. We have all commented in the past about how the song is kind of quiet compared to the version that is played in the Run DMC movie Tougher Than Leather.
Nice work...I like it.

" ## CORRECTION: Big thanks to Psychokiller77 for pointing this one out. Just about all sources have pointed to Funkadelic's I'll Bet You as the one of the sample sources for Car Thief, but as it was pointed out, the sample actually comes from The Jackson 5's version of I'll Bet You. The difference between the two tracks is VERY obvious and is worth checking out. Now, I'm not going to deconstruct and recompile the compilation, but I strongly suggest that you download the individual track HERE (http://www.mediafire.com/?eczmygiwzgx), and since it's properly tagged and numbered, you should simply delete the Funkadelic track and replace it with the Jackson 5 track. Finally got a decent drum sample. (y)
Okay. Well, since the remastered edition of the album is coming out I guess theres no point to this anymore...except the album is in standard 2.0 and this is a 5.1 project!
I've finally sorted out the 5.1 mix of Car Thief for all'a y'all and I've rar'd it and slapped it on megaupload. After downloading the .vob files you can either -
a) play them on your p.c if you have a surround set up connected to it
b) burn the files to a dvdr.
If you take the second option, just drag the .vob file into Nero dvd creater wizard and burn away. The audio is encoded in Dolby Digital AC3 so you need the right kit to decode it.
Please check this out if your kitted out for surround sound. I guarantee you'll love it.
5.1 Surround sound mix (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P6QTSXN2).
For those without surround sound, heres (http://www.zshare.net/audio/539607658c09e0a3/) the 97% finished track in normal mp3 form
