I did a search and found a few people wanting this to come true...but I haven't seen anyone mention the news that it should be coming out next month. If this is already mentioned somewhere, I appoligize.

I spoke with a local record store owner this morning (I've been doing business with him for 18 years). He said that the Capitol distributor has not confirmed a release date, but it is definitely coming (and that the date may be pushed back again before it's over with). It will be available in an 8 panel fold out digipak, and on 180g vinyl, and the store has them both on pre-order...

For the collectors... no news yet whether or not it is a US only release, but based on conversations with the distributor, it will be a limited edition. No confirmation but there is speculation that it will also be pressed in Japan on CD, and in the EU on vinyl.

Once again I find it hilarious that we as Beastie Boys fans have to dig around the internet and find this info ourselves and talk about it on their own website.

They are not much into giving us the scoop first are they?

The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique has been 24 bit digitally re-mastered for the 1st time, overseen personally by the band to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release. The original vinyl artwork has been faithfully restored in this 8 panel eco-friendly limited edition CD with fold-out poster. It also includes a free digital download for a track-by-track commentary by the band discussing each song over the music - Paul's Boutique "The Director's Cut" bonus audio

Man, I hope this is for real.

(throw in a few demos/unreleased songs please too!:D)

If there is any merit to this then I see it as a spit in the face from the Beastie Boys directly to their fans. Jesus Christ, It's one thing if they don't won't to come here and give an occasional what's up but this a whole different kettle of shit if they don't even wish to disclose their latest release ON THEIR OWN SITE. That shit is WEAK. I hope this is Bullshit: And bear in mind- I love the idea and would be first in line for but if that's their attitudes towards their fans to pass it off 5th hand off some site that they never visit then piss off to them is what I have to say to that

If they did spit in our faces, we could sell it on ebay for enough to buy the CD & Vinyl....

This sounds awesome.... I'll definitley be pickin up both the cd and vinyl for it. And about the whole the beasties not talkin about it themselves.... who cares as long as its comin out they really dont need to talk about it, there really isnt anything to hype up about it. It seems like with them it could very well come out next month, or it could be pushed back for like a month. Why talk about it get all the fans hyped up, then jus have them all disapointed when its gotta be pushed back for a lil longer. So i have a feeling once January comes around(if its actually coming out in January) theyll prolly officially announce it.... But i think the insound one said that it wasnt even really set in concrete yet that its gonna be coming out in January. either way they know most fans will be pickin up regardless when it comes out so wats the big deal?

oh give it a fucking rest. if you don'tl ike it, don't be a fan, it's easy. they're laid back, capitol clearly haven't been doing their job properly for years in my mind, and either way...we're all getting the news on here once in awhile, so what's the problem? i'm sure when all the details are confirmed and ready etc it'll be announced officially, a very select few other sites have clearly just got wind off it and posted the news early. what's the point in the beasties posting about it but saying 'uh, no idea where you can get it from yet.' it's not even losted on amazon or anything yet!

i see it as more a celebration that their fans are so good and resourceful. i don't expect everything to be rammed down my throat news-wise non stop from the beasties.

What would be considered unnormal price?

1. Unnormal
adj. Not normal. Unique, if you will

Capitol released 180g versions of the prior Radiohead albums this year. I think I paid over $25 each. Modern CDs released that way on vinyl usually take up two LPs instead of one and they typically cost more than $20.

I'd be interested in whether Beasties get anything out of this or whether it's just a way for Capitol to make more money off the catalog. If the Beasties are involved then maybe something will be posted on the main page closer to the time of release. Apparently marketers find it counterproductive to hype up people to buy a product that isn't for sale yet because they won't buy it when it really becomes available.

I did pre-order on both.
The CD is supposed to be available 1/27, and the vinyl on 2/10.
I have been looking everywhere to see if I could find international releases (seems hard to believe they would go through all of the trouble of remastering and then market in the US only), but no luck so far...

Anyone seen releases other than the US?

From Stolling Rone (no mention of a bonus disc though):

It’s too late to make David Fricke’s top reissues of 2008, but next year’s list has an early contender: Beastie Boys will reissue their epic Paul’s Boutique on January 27th to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary. The classic LP has been digitally remastered for the first time, with all three Beasties overseeing the 24-bit process. The album’s original vinyl artwork will be restored in an eco-friendly, eight-panel digipak displaying a panoramic view of the intersection at Rivington and Ludlow in New York City’s Lower East Side. A foldout poster will also be included in the package, plus the reissue gives fans access to a free download of a “track-by-track” album commentary, with Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA talking about the songs while the track plays in the background, much like Director’s Commentaries on DVDs.

Despite a four-star Rolling Stone review, Paul’s Boutique was deemed a critical failure upon its release in 1989. But the Beastie Boys’ second album (and follow-up to the massively successful License to Ill) has gone on to become a cult classic and is recognized as one of the greatest rap albums of all time. With sample-heavy production courtesy of the Dust Brothers — who would go on to produce Beck’s Odelay — the post-modern lyrics on the album would touch on everything from Steve McQueen to The Empire Strikes Back to Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, and that’s just in the song “High Plains Drifter,” itself a reference to a Clint Eastwood film.

As for the Beastie Boys in 2009, the trio is reportedly working a new album that is expected out in May. The band last released their instrumental The Mix-Up in 2007.

oh hey this blog is alright:

Nice find, KP! While I love PB, my favorite part of that article is where we have this, "a new album that is expected out in May". (y)

Working backwards, I would guesstimate we would have a single a few weeks before that. I wonder if they're gonna shut down this place a month or so out to help keep it from leaking like they did for TT5B. And I'm curious if they'll put some teaser bits and pieces of songs up.

I'd hope not; it gave away The Mix Up completely. Maybe bits of a song or two, but a bit more secrecy would be nice. That and the (no offence cause I know you're tight) shaky pre-release review that mentioned goofiness and such was a bit off; I don't like being told about this band by people who don't know them like I (and yourself, and many others more qualified and honourable) do.

Does this count as an album release towards their contract with Capitol?

Was this the Beastie Boys idea or was this a SGH type joint?

Any promotional type work going to be done for this like they did for SGH? (ie Conan appearance)

Will this be the best Beastie Boys release in 2009? ;)

I was thinking of the TT5B release where they took down the messageboard and put up the big NY skyline and when you rolled your mouse over certain spots you heard 10 seconds or so of a new track every couple of days...or something like that.

yeah 20th anniversary edition next year i reckon, that would be awesome. particulary as it is now almost universilly accepted as one of the best rap/hip hop albums of all time, if not albums full stop. well, to latter is true to me anyway.

but the critics would love it - it'd get good reviews etc - i reckon like an 8-way fold out digipak like the deluxe vinyl, with one disc of the album, the other disc of the b-sides and the demos, all completely remastered, 5.1 etc.

yauch, if you're reading, you could even throw in a bonus dvd with some documentary shit, interviews with everyone involved etc and stories about the time... and the gig which the Shadrach video was recorded at - what was it, 5 songs you played? as it seems one of the fews shows you guys played around that time, it would be fascinating to see the whole thing. he even said he thought the footage was around somewhere if i remember correctly!

geeez it makes me sad that this will almost certainly never happen - it's a golden oppourtunity, particulary for the fans, but as has been pointed out, the samples would obviously be a huge issue. the albums and the boys deserve some lush treatment on this one though.

I know this may be asking the impossible, but every time an album is released I spend an extra couple of hundred bucks buying from international sites trying to get a copy from every country where the album is released. Do you have any way of knowing or finding out if the album is going to be released internationally and if so what countries? It would save me an assload of time and money.

Agreed. As exciting and relieving as the teasers/easter eggs of TT5B and TMU were, they really acted as buzzkills for when the albums finally dropped. I really don't want to know what to expect until im holding the album in my hands, nor do i have the will power to not listen to posted (or hidden) snippets scattered across the website.

This site lists all of the bouillibaisse tracks separately. That would be really sweet if that's how they plan to press the record. While I love the whole piece in it's entirety, it would be great to be able to jump to each song individually at will too.

My dearest most beloved Beastie Boys,

This is one of the most ground breaking, life changing, albums EVER. It never had a TOUR. So - could you be so kind as to honor this amazing work on it's 20th anniversary with a couple tour dates that would consist of material you'd have played as though it were then? Or heck, even some Paul's Boutique start to finish in it's entirety shows?! I beg of you. The universe needs this.

you cant really have a 'teaser' for an album everyone's heard.. dont you have to listen to it on good speakers or something to hear the difference?

dave790
01-12-2009, 05:01 PM
I can hear the difference on the front page 'teaser,' but obviously it'll come more apparent when I listen to it on my 5.1 beast! I am curious as to how they've remastered it though, given that they couldn't re-record the samples or anything (I presume). But I definitely think it sounds better on the front page, and I've been hoping they'd remaster it for absolutely ages.

edit: and i think McDuff was referring to teasers for the new album, not PB2.

Well, Amazon.co.uk did orginally have an import version listed, but it has been replaced with this one. That would lead me to believe its a UK release. Having said that though, HMV and Play.com dont have it listed...

Yeah, they're editing out adrock, D, and MCA and replacing them with Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy and T.I.
T.I. is far above lil wayne, and stool samples are above Soulja Boy.

They are specific about the country of origin in the item descriptions, that is one of the reasons I buy from them even though they are expensive as hell. I can only rely on my personal experience, but they have their s**t together. They wouldn't list something as a UK release if it was a US import, or at least that's what I believe based on my dealings with them. At this point I am convinced that it will be released in the US on Vinyl & CD, and in the UK (or EU) on CD and vinyl as well...

I am curious to know if it will be released elsewhere (Japan, Australia, Canada, Holland etc...)

Yay!

Just preordered Pauls Boutique and Killzone 2 off Play.com both at great prices and free delivery.

Which begs the question, why would anyone bother buying the mp3 version of the album if it was around £8 on itunes etc when the cd is only around £1 more? You get the fold out artwork, a proper hard copy and you can simply transfer it to mp3 yourself...

Its gonna be a good month!

Doesn't look like there is any, is there? I'm surous about the whole newsletter thing, figured if there was any more info it'd be in that, but with an apparent week or so to go it seems all details must be with thre suppliers by now.

Unless the date still isn't 100% and companies are simply going on what they know so far. But I don't see any extra tracks being present, personally. Some idiot at a company/newsite probably thought that this new one has 23 tracks whilst the old one had 15.

Amazon shows the LP shipping before the CD. I assume that's a mistake and the LP was pushed back too. I really only care about the LP. My original LP is in horrible condition. :) I'd rather buy the LP at my favorite record store instead of online, so I guess I should just wait and see when it arrives.

I'm nervous about the so-called eco friendly packaging. WTF does that mean?

Well, don't get me wrong or ungrateful. I've been jonsing for a fresh remastered Paul's Boutique for a decade, and the Solid Gold Hits totally sold me on the deal after I heard the remastering of the LTI and PB tracks.

I just thought for the anniversary and Special Release they would of thrown in all the B-Sides that were on the vinyl.

Plus, hearing And What You See Is What You Get on the main page of the site kind of confirmed it for me that they would be included.

I'll be looking forward to the Band Commentary. But I want those B-Sides!

The 20th Anniversary Commemorative Package sounds cool but it is ridiculously overpriced.

The digital download is essentially a throw away as you can just rip the CD yourself and get maximum digital quality.

So you are basically paying $80 for a t-shirt and a poster.

Both look cool, but not $80 cool.

It's too bad the poster wasn't a framed print or something, that would be worth it.

Amazon.com listed both the remastered CD and vinyl as including posters. Does anyone know if this is still true or we have to pay $129.99 to get the poster?

The poster should be sold as an add-on, just like the goody WHITE t-shirt. Who wears white t-shirts anymore? That shirt could have been way better.

Listening to the remastered tracks...its SO much better than the regular release. Everything is a lot brighter and clearer. I've heard some shitty re masters before, but thus far this seems great. It also plays 'faster'...and would I be incorrect to suggest that some of the tracks have some subtle differences?

I'm sure the CD/Vinyl are going to come with a poster, but I highly doubt that a CD is going to come with an eight foot long poster. The Commemorative package Poster is most likely something special and different than the other ones.

There's a problem with the Deluxe Download that I bought last night... the audio on the Shake Your Rump video runs five seconds ahead of the video, making it so nothing matches up. Is it like this for anyone else?

how exciting

'09 seems like a good year so far for beastie stuff

my 2 favorite beastie albums are geting remastered/re-issued and there's a new one on the way

t'is a shame that PB won't have the b-sides included though

but i'd honestly rather have no b-sides at all if they were gonna be included on 1 disc... that may sound strange... but i can't stand albums with bonus tracks...it ruins the original feel of the album... or in wire's words... the bonus tracks don't honour the "conceptual clarity of the original statements"

I found this on another messageboard. Not sure how much truth there is to it, but here you go:

FYI: a lot of the original samples were (not surprisingly) never legally cleared. I read an article on-line over the weekend that said this release is only possible since 20 years have passed and it was granfathered in. Also, they were unable to go back and reclear anything not on the original album, hence there are no bonus tracks or updates, and the beastie commentary had to be offered as a free download.
