View Full Version : Official Bootlegs?

I wonder if the band has considered recording and selling official bootlegs of their live shows? I mean with a pending album and tour, now is the perfect opportunity for the band to consider it.

There's obviously a market for it with the Beasties. Seeing as how "The Hub" has been promoted right here on their official website for years, and that's only used by a small portion of the most hardcore of fans who are interested in owning a copy of one of the live shows. Most of the live stuff being shared isn't of very good quality either.

I know this isn't a new idea. Other bands have done this before. I know Pearl Jam sells live bootlegs right on PearlJam.com (https://www.pearljam.com/music/2008bootlegs)

Last tour, featuring the Gala Event show and the standard show in each city was an awesome idea. Giving the moderate and the hardcore fan the live experience they wanted from a Beastie show. Some of the stuff they dusted off for some of those Gala shows was awesome and it's too bad some of that stuff wasn't recorded in a high quality format.
I would love to own the shows I saw on that tour.

I'm no tech expert, but I can't imagine it would be very hard to make a soundboard recording of their show to offer up for sale, and at $10 to $15 a pop I bet it'd be worth it to do.

Discuss.

I don't know about 'buying' official bootlegs...I'm sure the group would be willing to give them away free. It would seem a bit hypocritical to promote the Hub but then sell the same live stuff for profit.

Come on now.

They could never sell official soundboard bootlegs. Sample laws would keep them in and out of Court for several years if they would sale live shows for profit.

I think they should do some soundboards though, and then release them via the website for free. If they were to do this, I'm sure people would take advantage of this and sell copies on Ebay and shit.

I agree with Mr. Tang.

The odds of the Beasties selling live shows are probably slim and none, due to amount of Beats and samples MMM drops during his "Intro" and "Interludes". Clearing those samples would be expensive and a pain in the ass.

But... As it has been mentioned. A Soundboard Quality "Live Show" for free download would be nice here and there. (Hint, Hint)

Come on Yauch... You're reading this.

I believe they did did - almost pioneered perhaps - in 1998, recording the shows and giving them away for free on the webstite, but Capitol shut it down.

I hadn't considered the "samples" conundrum that selling live shows would present here.
Too bad, because those Gala shows would have been the ideal time to do something like this.
How come there's a million and one DJ's selling mixtapes that include direct samples of all sorts and they can get away with it?
I'm sure all those guys aren't paying for sample fees.

I disagree with you on your second point though. You can't allow the potential for a few people looking to capitalize on free official boots by selling them on Ebay to dictate how the Beasties want to handle their business.
I'm pretty sure such a thing would be illegal for anyone to do, and my guess is that it would be extremely limited anyway.

.....oops, i fuckin shot that.

I vaguely remember the MAJOR hiccup w/ its release was clearing all MMM samples- wasn't there some interview where MCA said that was one of the hardest parts of getting it finished and out there.
Also of note there is no "soundtrack" or audio only version of the show (although one could argue that there is with technology being what it is these days- but nothing official). Fairly telling I'd say.
It's a damn shame to cause that would be (truly) awesome!

They weren't puttin' up complete shows but you'd get 2 or 3 selections from each stop. It was dope.

I remember reading somewhere that most of their budget for AIFST went for clearing samples.

I'm listening to the Milwaukee bootleg from the latest Get Out and Vote tour and damn it sounds very nice!!!

Horovitz changed the lyrics on ChCheck it Out..."bank cashier, engineer...leather, lace, sheer"

Could you please PM me the link to that show?

Please and thank you!

Fugazi did it, but they obviously wouldnt have had any sampling issues. Also, they would never rip off fans thats for sure, BBoys dont either.

They could drop them to me on the Down-low and I'd have no problem hosting them up.. ;)
