New FADS were great too.

It was definitely a great era for music, skater pop, expansion of industrial/EDM (Nitzer Ebb anyone?), goth, pseudo hippy stuff like World Party, grunge, hardcore, ska, college rock.

120 Minutes and CFNY out of Toronto kicked ass

It's odd to see some of the bands that most likely inspired these acts are the ones still relevant (The Cure, R.E.M. The Pixies, Sonic Youth, U2, Chili Peppers)

oh yeah!

Pop Will Eat Itself...definitely good shit. I bought Dos Dedos Mis Amigos when cd longboxes will still being used.

Talking harder stuff....how about Helmet and Suicidal Tendencies (more of the skater side of me)

It was funny, we'd warm up a night with some drinking music like Lowest of the Low, go see Snapcase, and drive home listening to 10,000 Maniacs

we were quite a musically mixed crowd

i think you had to be there. i pretty much exclusive listened to aerosmith and bon jovi until 1996, so it all passed me by, except when i saw the indie chart on the chart show. so i didnt really listen to any of that stuff until a few years ago when my housemate got all his tapes back from his parents house. and i didnt enjoy it. pwei was pretty funny. the rest. hmm...

i was only pulling your leg.

that chart show was the best pop programme, no presenters and lots of exposure to different music. i remember when indie chart was just about independent record labels and you used to get someone like the pixies at number two behind kylie minogue cos PWL was independent.

good clip that.

the boo radleys were seriously brilliant but went a bit poppy and yer man who wrote all the songs had a brian wilson complex. giant steps and come on kids are two fantastic albums.

The house of Love still stands as one of the biggest surprises and best live acts I saw all of 90's, and I saw them all... I lived downtown Seattle through the whole grungy thing and a major act played every night.

The House of Love played a small nightclub with only about 40 people there, they put all 40 of us on notice, it could of been a stadium show, they where magnificent! I've always been perplexed why they never garnered more attention.

I've spent a lot of the 2000s thinking that (literally the day after New Year's Day 2000 some circles started getting nostalgic for the '90s ), but it's 2009 dude. There are kids in school right now who don't even remember the day (and may not have even been born!) when Kurt Cobain died, so I think its time is due to start reminiscing.

such a strange story that band has. i dont want this too sound corny, but they were one band that left behind more than music. The whole catalogue deletion and all the stunts especially the big one ,left an impression on me and others. There's a book at the major incident but i have never read it. They were massive in publicsing sampling and doing it all yourself, in uk anyway. Top top band, i didnt think about them for this thread, i dont necessarily consider them to be in this company, they were pretty unique. not heard that tune for ages though, nice one

well type klf or k foundation into wikipedia for the full story but here's the short version of why they were ace.

1) Had a number one record without any airplay, using lots of other peoples records way before it was the norm
2) Wrote a book explaining exactly how they did it which gave a list of tips on how to basically take your favourtie records, a sampler and make a hit record, once you have read its quite easy to see that some records in the 90's used this formula
3) made a great album called chill out that was all sheep sounds, ambient noises and clips of elvis' in the ghetto
4) At the height of their success, they deleted all their back catalogue and disbanded in the name of art over cash.
5)They then called themsleves the k foundation and wrote a song they refused to put on general release until world peace was established
6) Killed a sheep live in stage at the brit awards.
And last but no means least:
7) Invited a group of journos, musicians and friends to watch the two band members BURN A MILLION POUNDS WORTH OF THEIR OWN MONEY by hand. Thats what the book was about. It was no fake stunt, they really did it.

that wasnt really a very short version, sorry

6) Killed a sheep live in stage at the brit awards.

No. They shot with a machine gun filled with blanks after the song was over. "The KLF have now left the music business" thing was said, since they disbanded and deleted their back catalogue a few months later (only in the UK though). Then they got a sheep from a butcher and delivered it to a Brit Awards afterparty.

ah well, i was close with that one - i have no idea how successful they were in other countries and if that means only deleting in the uk (which i didnt know) still makes a bit of money then fair do's, they were always full of clever stunts. i need to read that book.
