....I did a "best 2008" search and didn't see anything, so please forgive me if this has already been done.

I haven't seen Man on Wire, The Wrestler, Let the Right One In, In Bruges, Waltz with Bashir, Che, or Wendy and Lucy, and my gut tells me
Gran Torino, Revolutionary Road, Valkyrie, The Changeling, and The Reader probably ain't so hot anyway (but I might still check out Eastwood),
but here's my top ten (which I'm sure I'll revise as I realize I've forgotten something or some of the promising stuff gets seen, etc.):

Frozen River
The Visitor
Wall*E
The Dark Knight
Slumdog Millionaire
Milk
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
Iron Man
Vicky Christina Barcelona

Yes, these are better than The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, My Blueberry Nights, Synechdoche NY, Happy Go Lucky, and Rachel
Getting Married. ;)

You guys?

tropic thunder, duh!

also, iron man, the dark knight & incredible hulk! ;)
i saw valkyrie a few days ago, but i wouldn't say it was one of the best or anything.

Wendy and Lucy was pretty good.

Otherwise, from what I've seen (and what I remember) in some sort of order

Frozen river
Lion’s Den
Ping pong (http://www.pingpongkingen.se/) kingen (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1110272/)
Patrik (http://www.moviezine.se/filmsidor/patrik_15.shtml) 1,5 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1067733/)
The Brothers Bloom
Rumba
Rachel Getting Married

Vicky Christina was too obvious.... but OK....

religulous
milk
benjamin button
w
quantum of solace
taxi to the dark side
city of men
the wrestler
the bank job

felon
body of lies
burn after reading

there were so many others i've yet to see such as chicago 10, changeling, pride and glory, righteous kill, jcvd, slumdog millionaire, frost/nixon, che, appaloosa, and many many others.

i couldn't stand iron man, tropic thunder, the happening and vantage point.

I mainly spent my time seeing blockbusters/mainstream so my list isn't as indie as some;

Dark Knight
The Orphanage
HellboyII
Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Its about some fag or something.

I IMDb'd it. It's about the first openly gay elected official. From the previews, I seriously thought Sean Penn was playing another retard. I Am Sam II: Electric Bungaloo.

Audio.

Batman, basically it was the only movie I enjoyed at the theaters

Milk was terrible. Gus Van Sant is a horrible director. I still hold a grudge on what he did with that let's make a story up and say it's about Kurt Cobain "movie".

The Dark Knight
Grand Torino
The Fall
BangkokB makes a Porno...And Fails
StepBrothers

Dorothy Wood

the house bunny

hancock

yeah, actually I think the only movie that really impressed me was slumdog millionaire. everything else was pretty predictable. entertaining sure, but predictable.

Drederick Tatum

Tropic Thunder was funny until Steve Coogan blew up.

Okay I watched the Wrestler and it is amazing. Really good stuff. It kinda reminded me of Rocky Balboa, which I thought was a great film.

Got in an argument with a friend over Milk today. Hah, it's so stupid to argue about that kind of thing but just can't help it sometimes I guess.

saw valkyrie last night and wow it's really good. another solid piece of work by bryan singer. surprisingly tom cruise kept his tom cruiseness to a bare minimum.

The Dark Knight, hands down.

Nothing else was hyped-up so much, but it justfied it and delivered. And it's very obvious and well noted, but Heath Ledger was fucking good.

edit: Indy IV was massively disappointing for me.

Dark Knight
In Bruges
Pineapple Express
3:10 To Yuma
Burn After Reading

Would be my top 5 of this year.

Some other awesome films that I only just saw for the first time this year: Donnie Brasco (I know), Death Proof, Full Metal Jacket, Mean Streets (I KNOW!), No Country For Old Men

Cool (love a told you so moment).
I can't make my list yet as I Haven't seen Gran Torrino or any of the other recent end of the year darlings (slumdog, revelotionary road, milk, the one where Philip Seymour Hoffman may or may not be didling little boys- although none of them look that appealing to me outside of revolutionary)

Of the flicks I've seen
The Wrestler was head and shoulder better than anything I saw this year. Period.
but also on the list (thus far) :
The Dark Night (very impressed)
Iron Man
In Bruges (I have to thank paddy for reminding me that I loved this- although it puts me in the very awkward position of agreeing with him)
Thats it off the top of my head- but I did miss Choke which I was psycho excited about and kept not being able to go see- I'm fairly sure it would of made it on this list.

An interesting counter conversation might be best characters of the year, as there have been several VERY impressive performances-
obviously Downey Jr and Ledger and I think my incredible respect for Rourke's Ram is well documented at this point. But I'd like to throw in the cat who played Howling Wolf (can't rember his name and feeling too lazy to google) in Cadillac Records- he was god-damn unbelievable- stole every scene he was in and no one gave a bad performace in that flick (unbelievably not even Beyonce).
That is all for now.
:)

i need to go to the movies more often, as i've hardly seen anything this year. any love for miracle at st anna?

any love for miracle at st anna?

Thought it was VERY uneven (which is to say a standard Spike Lee joint) but after how he nailed it with Inside Man in a way he hadn't in decades, yeah this was ultimately disappointing (for me).

This is great example of my ambivalence toward paddy- this is both a little funny and a little douchey. But its probably just my shit, its all good.

I agree and disagree with your choices, In Bruges is a fantastic movie and one of the very best of 2008.

Documentaries are my favorite category of film and I agree Man on Wire had multiple lessons on life, that dude "Philippe Petit" also set the record straight on the special features of the DVD... as far as any dramatic license director James Marsh took in the film. Beautiful film.

It's impossible, that's sure. So let's start working. (http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/884/884544/man-on-wire-20080626053240050.jpg)
