For me - Paul's Boutique saved rap. It just did and it captured my imagination. I remember breaking my tape and having to buy another.....such a classic. I worked at a shitty grocery store and the only thing that got me through was, "I stay up all night - I go to sleep watching dragnet - never sleep alone......you got it.....
In the sad state Rap is in - can a re-issue of PB and a new album help save the industry once more?
Eminem? C'mon....not even close....
5Bouroughs was more political commentary - which is cool - but is the new album really going to be the kind of shit where we could play it while playing basketball?
In the rain?

It didn't save shit then and it won't now; It'll just bang. If you've thought rap needed 'saving' for this long, I wonder if you even like the genre. There's always been shit music, but not at the expense of good stuff, you know?

TT5B did have it's share of "social commentary". But it did have it's share of fun Hip-Hop tracks...
Ch-Check It Out
Triple Trouble
That's It That's All
Rhyme The Rhyme Well
Shazam!
and others...
It wasn't all Political Rap. Hello Nasty had it's share of serious lyrics as well.

Paul's Boutique was, and is an album ahead of its time. It's revamping will be a good warmup for the big show - the new album.

So.....rap doesn't need saving? Rap is crap right now. I'm tired of listening to one or two words over and over drawled out.....or Lil' Wayne - I cannot understand half his shit most of the time.....this is why MOST people no longer listen....
The magic is coming back soon........and the poetic verse will spark the imagination once more for future generations....
Seriously - it's pretty lame now....

There's good rap and hip hop about, you just need to get away from MTV.

Today's rap is weak....sorry.
MTV is even worse - they still have that network????

Yeah look, again, it's out there. No need to apolgise. I know some good rap and hip hop from the last 3 or 4 years. I've never heard any of it on the radio or on the telly, that's all I'm saying. Maybe make a bit of effort if you're really into a genre or whatever. You can't dismiss it based on the rap or hip hop that's popular, just like you can't dismiss all forms of music cos of the state of the charts.

I'm probably preaching to the choir (or maybe not, who knows?), but as far as making rap interesting to me again (saving it, maybe) it has to be Clipse. Consistently great lyrics, the Re-Up Mixtapes, great albums, even the latest mixtape. There's no group making rap as invigorating these days, for my money.
This has always seemed like a Clipse-favouring board - at least in 'Other Music' it has. That's a good thing. (y)

That's why I don't think hip-hop/rap needs saving.

Sounds like a 'Cypress Hill III - Temples of Boom' bside.
