First Weekend of October:
Detour
(are you familiar? It has only been on the past 3 years, and they hold it in the streets of LA in an area where there are many old, official bldgs. It's kind of wonderful. Went in 2007, too - my friend and I met some local boys at the end of the show (bloc party closed and they were amazing) and we ended up walking the 'old town' area of LA, joking, running and kissing for hours. That was magical too. That night I heard Bad Brains for the first time (the boys a best of) and that, you know what, was MAGICAL ALSO.
Anyway, no way Detour could live up to that this year - here's the line up:
The Mars Volta (http://www.myspace.com/themarsvolta), Gogol Bordello (http://www.myspace.com/gogolbordello), Shiny Toy Guns (http://www.myspace.com/shinytoyguns), The Presets (http://www.myspace.com/thepresets), Cut Copy (http://www.myspace.com/cutcopy), Matt Costa (http://www.myspace.com/mattcostamusic), Black Lips (http://www.myspace.com/theblacklips), Hercules and Love Affair (http://www.myspace.com/herculesandloveaffair), Grand Ole Party (http://www.myspace.com/grandoleparty), Datarock (http://www.myspace.com/datarock), Bitter:Sweet (http://www.myspace.com/bittersweettunes), The Submarines (http://www.myspace.com/thesubmarinesmusic), Adam Freeland (http://www.myspace.com/adamfreelandmusic), The Bloody Beetroots (http://www.myspace.com/thebloodybeetroots), Surkin (http://www.myspace.com/surkin), Para One (http://www.myspace.com/paraone), Guns n Bombs (http://www.myspace.com/gunsnbombs) (Live), Peanut Butter Wolf (http://www.myspace.com/pbwolf), Buraka Som Sistema (http://www.myspace.com/burakasomsistema), Nico Vega (http://www.myspace.com/nicovega), Japanese Motors (http://www.myspace.com/thejapanesemotors), The Mae Shi (http://www.myspace.com/themaeshi), We Are Wolves (http://www.myspace.com/wearewolvesnoussommesloups), Afternoons (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=110501077), Noah and the Whale (http://www.myspace.com/noahandthewhale), Mugison (http://www.myspace.com/mugison), donMoy (http://www.myspace.com/donmoy), DJ Kid Lightning (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=6495413), Paparazzi (http://www.myspace.com/paparazzi), AC Means, Koss Silent Disco (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=389270196)
cut copy were SO MUCH FUN. Mars Volta was impressive, Black Lips were rude and made me laugh. Hercules and Love Affair had tech. difficulties, but got the crowd confused and moving. (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=389270196)
Matt Costa is adorable, Bittersweet sounded like fancy grocery store music, and koss silent disco = GENIUS! it's just what it says it is - headphones, in-this-case-a-lady dj transmitting to the brain.

- the ones in bold are the ones i remember seeing. I had a good time, but never wrote a timely review as I was laid off the day after the show. It has been a challenging time since then, too. I've had a lot of hurdles to jump. Turns out that someone stole my identity (former roommate, I think) and took it to Oklahoma - I've had to clear this up before they'd let me register for school NEVER MIND VOTE. Also, I've had to prove that I did graduate from high school (the school was shut down and locating my records at the district was a mess. There was a reason that school was shut!) What else? Oh - as I worked for a non-profit, I can't collect any unemployment insurance (something they weren't legally obligated to tell me. They should be embarassed.)
What else? That day I was terminated (fatal!) was 12 hours after I paid rent at my new apt., with a dear friend (one I went to shows with, on trips with - saw the Boys with, took her to the superlative Mexico show - usually me loaning her the money.) I didn't cancel the check, but told her that searching for work and moving was too much for me to handle - plus, I'm good with $, had paid in advance. (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=389270196)
She was my best friend, I've been nothing but generous to her (she still owes me about 400) but now after some strange things (her mom called to tell me I had to keep helping her pay rent) it looks like we are no longer friends - so my heart is broken. Thought she liked my jokes - turns out it was the trips around the world instead. (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=389270196)
sorry all of this underlined. This computer is acting strangely - like everything else! (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=389270196)
But at least Obama won! (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=389270196)
I've just found 2 part time jobs, too - so things are looking up. Do you know what crepes are? I make them a few days a week and have also just found work one day a week assisting an accountant. So that takes away the terrible not working no income fear. In fact, am thinking of the next festival to attend and it might just be Langerado, in Florida in March. Check out this lineup:
