View Full Version : Chicago (the city, not the play/movie)
Welp, I am traveling to Chicago for the first 2 weeks of March for work. Is there anyone on here that lives there that knows of any good places to booze and/.or do drugs?
I will more than likely take in a few Blackhawks games.
Maybe someone 1/2 way decent will play at some local dump.
I know Sarky was living there, but I havent seen a post from her since my return....
Please help. 2 weeks is a long time...(lb)

I'm actually sarky, but I can't really say I feel comfortable giving you advice on where to booze on account of the stories you tell on here.
well, actually, you might like it at the Exit. (exitchicago.com)
its the kind of place I usually go to randomly late night (it's a 4 a.m. bar) for a laugh and change of pace, because it's so shady and hilarious. and you can dance to industrial upstairs, which is super hilarious and awesome because it gets packed and some people are sooo serious about their dancing.
anyway, there's a strip club over there too, and hookers sometimes.

are you talking about the weather?
what is it about chicago that would make you hate it after an hour? where were you hanging out?
Nygel

down town, then the ghetto. I'm speaking atmosphere. I've been there probably 4 times. weather wise, yeah, that sucks in comparison as well. We're in a cold front... at 65. but I just hate the compact big city I suppose. that two block strip thats just solid shitty driver after shitty driver who hit the horn more often than they breath. generally, with so many people in one area, you're bound to run into assholes, and it seems like every time i go its full of them. THOUGH chicago did give me my favorite quote ever. I was crossing the street and this was what i heard in a clusterfuck of people scrambling in front of cars. "Yo man, I've been doin dat yoga shit man, and you know what? I can literally suck my own dick now, it's the greatest thing I ever did."
Dorothy Wood
01-14-2009, 01:15 AM
what's "the ghetto"?
also, there's a lot more to chicago than downtown. nobody in their right mind hangs out downtown, there's too many tourists. it's acceptable to go shopping on a weekday, maybe, go to a fancy bar for fun...sure, but only once in a great while.
no need to put down a whole city when you've only seen part of it.

I'm just saying, don't judge and/or insult a whole city when you haven't even experienced it fully. especially when you're comparing it to orlando.
but sure, if you're underage and don't really like music or museums or architecture, I guess I can see why you'd hate it here.
good luck to you.

Sorry, was totally joking. I think I might be able to point out Chicago on a map of the USA with an accuracy of around 1000kms (near the lakes?), but I have no idea what it's like.

soooo, have you fully experienced orlando? or are you not taking your own advice?
i never said it was in comparison to orlando either, ive only been a few times.
again, my opinion, i dont enjoy being there nor the people there. ive been around it and in it, downtown is the most popular place, thus why i mention it. settle down.

first off, downtown is the most popular place...for tourists.
second, you seem like a snob, with the whole "I live by the rich people", statement. you and I seem to value different things, so yes, it's fine that we have different opinions. it's just very rude to judge a place and the people who live there when you know nothing about it. I never said a word about florida, I love florida, it's cheesy as fuck and I wouldn't want to live there, but it's a strange and wonderous land that I'm glad exists.
what I'm telling you, young man, will help you in your life. don't judge things based on limited information as it makes you out to be a jerk.
randy, it's extremely cold right now, but the snow is white and clean for the time being. and the sky is bright blue. I suppose it is depressing sometimes though, on account of the cold...and the homeless people.

Don't get offended, dude, it's just how things work. How many people you think make a face when I say I live in LA? "How could you live there", etc. etc. Everyone has their own ideas of how a place is, and obviously you can't really say unless you've lived there, but there's a few places I've been that I had a shitty experience in that I wouldn't go back to because, hey, gave it a shot, and I don't really care to try again.
And yeah it does seem kinda like a grey and cold place and one that I personally am not too interested in checking out. You've also talked about like "a guy got stabbed by my house" and stuff like that...Any big city will have that, but it's not exactly something making me jump at the chance

edit: there wasn't a stabbing, actually, 3 people were shot/murdered by my old house. no problems where I live now though. plenty of people get shot and stabbed in L.A. I love/hate L.A. anyway, but some of my best friends live there and it's got some cool stuff. and lots of famouses. I love famouses.

but it wasn't random, they were planned gang murders. there's a difference...in that there aren't maniacs running around constantly killing people for no reason.
I would in no way recommend my neighborhood for people who've never lived in the city. it is not the safest by any means, but it's not the most dangerous and it's very lovely in general. there's a starbucks a block away for pete's sake. and this kinda stuff: http://www.logansquarepreservation.org/150GreatPlaces.html

People who don't like Chicago, don't like metropolitan cities -- not an uber metropolis, like NYC, London, Rome, Tokyo, or Hong Kong. It is a pretty cool place with a city and mid-western US vibe mix.

I'm souring on Chicago. Crooked, cold mother fucker. One of my friends that moved away told me of an article that listed Chicago as the #1 city as far as loss of personal freedoms. Too many security cameras on the street corners, you can't get shit done these days.
Great city in the summer though.

Chicago third on list of Most Miserable Cities (http://realestate.yahoo.com/promo/americas-most-miserable-cities.html)
lol-...how the fuck do you measure misery
I read that article and it's shit. Flint & Detroit are less miserable than Chicago? One of the misery factors for Chicago is that the Cubs haven't won in 100 years. Not for me, I love the Cubs sucking. Anybody who is defined by their sports team is likely to be miserable anyway. Chicago is a great town because we have pretty much anything you want culturally and we are not as filthy as a NYC. Sissies that can't take the cold get out while creative eclectic people from all over flock here.
The weather sucks in the winter, but I'll put Chicago up against any US city in the summer. We wait all year for that 2 weeks of summer. And when we get it, watch the fuck out. Nothing like riding the red line through downtown during that first warm stretch when all the ladies bust out their hot little professional lady gear they have been waiting all year to wear. Hot little yuppies.

yeah, that article's pretty offensive. I mean...the corruption thing is probably what put chicago at #3, but that doesn't really have too much to do with misery does it? also, there are more arrests because we're trying to end the corruption, it doesn't mean we have more corruption than before, just punishing more people for it.
I don't know, the sales tax is stupid, but it doesn't ruin my life. and I don't give a shit about sports. the weather is yucky, yes, but if you bundle up and get proper boots, it's completely bearable. (I just learned this, ha).
I don't think articles like that are very nice. how are cities supposed to get ahead if year after year, magazines make lists about how crappy they are? (not that I think chicago will suffer, billions of people love chicago). I guess it just makes me sad too because I'm from detroit, and there are cool things about detroit...but it's mostly burnt out and dangerous...and it won't ever get better if nobody wants it to.
