Jesus H Christmas. My husband took off from London bound for New York this afternoon. A friend of ours in NJ just phoned me five minutes ago to tell me about this crash, and to let me know that it was a flight taking off from NY and definitely not a flight coming in from London, as he was afraid I would unknowingly flip on CNN or something and panic at a headline like "Passenger jet crashes into Hudson River". And you know what? I totally would have shit myself. I am so glad he called.

jumbo jets extremely rarely (as in only one has been reported as half successfully managing it in aviation history, methinks) land on water successfully.. they are very lucky.

bbc (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7832191.stm) says the crash may have been due to a BIRD STRIKE!

Yeah it was birds that had flown in the motor.
Everyone got off the plane tho, the plane landed so smoothly on the water it didn't break so it took ages for it to start sinking.

sorry but.. I dont pretend you understand, but always think to this:
in case of airplane accident and I survive... sir, where's my luggage?

ms.peachy

I think in this case we can assume the luggage is still in its compartment, since the plane is still whole. But it will be quite some time before it makes it to the carousel...

I always thought the bit about planes landing on water and then the little lifeboats was the comedy section of the safety film. I'll have to start paying attention now. And make sure I am wearing flats as I am sure not leaving a perfectly good pair of heels on the plane.

All this technology though and some little birds cause a whole lot of chaos....

How many birds must die before the leaders of the bird community stand up and fight for the skies that they slowly evolved to fly in millions of years before the Wright Brothers decided to play God and fuck it up for everyone.

Dude, it happened pretty fast. By the time anyone could think "holy shit that plane is going to land in the river, let me get my camera", it was down.

with all the security cameras and fixed weather cameras in the city, especially with this being on the river, you would think that the west side highway has some sort of traffic cam system in place. or fixed from the top of the skyrise building overlooking the river.

I'm just saying. and I wonder which direction the plane came in over the city to put itself overlooking the river as a runway. those folks must have been thinking "here we go again" with a low flying plane coming overhead...

they said they had about a minute and a half to two minutes between the goose attack and the emergency landing...

if one person decided to film it, they would be making a pretty penny right now.

If you know the geography of the area, it's kind of easy to picture how it all happened. Laguardia is inland a bit, in Queens, and I don't the exact direction of the runway but logistically it must be that the plane took off in something of a SW direction and normally would climb, and begin to bank south (which would be to the plane's left), just north of Upper Manhattan. So when things went wrong, the pilot tried first it seems to do something of a hard 'left' to go back to the airport, could tell straight away that wouldn't work; he spotted Teterboro airport which is in NJ, but that was too far inland, and already the attempt at turning back had put him facing more southeast, over the Hudson. Basically he just didn't have enough altitude to glide back to Laguardia or to Teterboro, what with all the giant buildings in the way. So, the river it is. I am just really impressed with the pilot's ability to have assessed the situation so quickly and completely.

I am willing to bet that somewhere along one coast or the other, some security camera will have caught all or part of it but it's possible there wasn't anything trained on that particular part of the river. My guess is that some footage of it will turn up in another day or so from some CCTV camera.

my real question is did the plane glide along the water, or take a giant plunge into the river? if they landed at 130 miles per hour, did they come down farther uptown and glide south for 20 or so blocks?

we now have an solution to overcrowded airports and runways!

laguardia is on the water, and the plane went up north into the bronx, it turned left and went through inwood across manhattan island to the hudson and turned south again. didnt you live up there, jeremy? some lady on 205th and west said she saw the plane go over her apartment building with both engines on fire. i think the pilot thought since the plane was on fire and probably didnt know how long he could handle that, he would land it on the hudson, shorter distance than teterboro + water to put out the engines fast. it seems the landing was low speed.

the pilot is also a hang-glider (is that what its called), so he knows how to handle wings with no thrust. i heard that after the plane lost the engines it actually went up 100 feet before making the final ascent, maybe he was trying to slow down, or just get some extra kick to make it to the water?

awesome pilot, hurray for ny waterway !
