View Full Version : how do i wear a scarf
i know that sounds like a really stupid question, and maybe it is, but i mean am i supposed to tie a knot, or wrap it around a certain way, or can i just wrap around my neck until i'm not cold anymore without having to worry about looking stupid? i tried looking around on google but it's too confusing because it's either about women's scarves, or about ascots or special men's scarves or something, or it presumes a certain amount of prior knowledge or i dunno, it isn't helpful.
so i need to wear a scarf today because it's freezing as hell but i don't want to look dumb, what do i do
I like square ones that I can fold in half then grab hold of the two furthest points and put them around my neck, pull back around and fasten at the front. Kinda of a cravat/scarf hybrid

wrap it around your neck round and round.
you can't really make mistakes with scarves, just do it so it's warm for you neck and face.
if it's especially long, you can fold it in half, hang it around your neck and pull the two loose ends through the looped end and tighten. that's the classy thing to do. (y)
it's below zero with the windchill out there man, i'm wearing a damn scarf so my face doesn't freeze off
so when i'm done, am i supposed to have both ends of the scarf hanging in front, or is one supposed to be behind, or are both behind, or what's the deal with that?
If it's a long scarf you can do what I've just found out is called a 'European Loop' (http://www.ablug.com/pages/european-loop-thru)

Just for shits and giggles I was on the BBMB on XMAS day because I was down with lupus and there was Bob. So I sent him a PM it goes as follows
"Merry Christmastree Bob
Hope you and yours have a good one.
Weird XMas for me. We listened to Biohazard as we were opening up gifts. Then the tree got thrown out of the deck. But, hey, it was Xmas, and I got a scarf and cufflinks.
Your Pal"
So you see. Bob isn't the only one with this "What do I do with my scarf?" Riddle. But I'm in BKK--Where it never breaks 80. People wonder if I'm crazy bc I like to try to kick pigeons, well try wearing a scarf while doing that and they'd have no doubt.

i really don't like that 'european loop' style, sorry! i think it's all style and no substance. it doesn't warm your neck as well as it would just wrapped around the, you know, traditional way. i see a scarf (a thick woolen one btw, not a silk scarf or a thin one - that's a different story) as a TOOL (make me warm) first and foremost, not an ACCESSORY. of course it can match etc and accessorise that way but no - just wrap it around your damned neck a couple of times, bob.
go for a classy grey or black or grey AND black (shock), navy blue, dark green or, my favourite, dark red. a boy gave me a dark red super posh scarf once and it was lush. i lost it, i think :(

i also like to wear satin scarfs when i go jogging but that looks probably hyper gay on guys and gays even

the "european loop" thing works for warmth, you just have to have a fluffy enough scarf and pull it tighter than the picture. I like it because it stays on that way and doesn't flap around and fall off.
however, the kind of scarves I wear now aren't really winter scarves so I don't need to do the loopy doo. they're rayon indian kind that are fatter and longer, but thinner and softer.
I actually have a picture of myself wearing a scarf with a t-shirt, heh. it was practical though, it was chilly outside, but I was going to be going into a very warm and humid cave. sorry gareth.

I put the scarf pic in the family album. it's not so bad.
I know what you mean though, last summer I went to an outdoor music festival in the sweltering heat and people were wearing scarves with tank tops or t-shirts. and cardigans and tall boots with socks...or multiple shirts, I didn't get it at all, my friends and I just kept making fun of people for their painful dedication to hipster fashion. must...not...take...offff....scarf....dying of heat...but cannot...ruin...outfit..... *passes out*
honestly, I blame kate moss. http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/04_01/MalibuMossBIG_520x800.jpg
(of course we tried to look stylish as well, but in breathable cotton dresses)

When I went to Europe I was taught to wear it in a European loop style by an actual European, and now this same European tells me that she doesn't like it that way. Great.

that is completely not true! jennifer told you to wear it that way, or you did it of your own accord. i would NEVER tell you to wear like that!
This is why I like being a fat bastard, I've too much flab to get cold so I don't have to ponce myself up with scarves and extra stuff to carry around.
Plus if I need to warm up, I just walk a bit faster or go into a pub.

I've been "funnelling" my scarves lately.
wrapping it around as many times as i can and then tucking in the loose ends. <3
I need to take up knitting or crocheting this year.
I am always on the search for the perfect scarf, so I might as well make it myself.
I often wear my scarf indoors with light clothing. If i come in from the cold and im too hot to continue wearing my coat but Ill leave on my scarf until I fully warm up.

i totally scarfed today
alright so the european loop thing: if i wear it under a coat, should i have the scarf hanging out over my coat, or should i have it tucked under the coat? i've tried both, and i can't decide which one looks the least fashionable, someone just tell me the answer
i still think this is a woman's style, for the record, but i saw a guy do it and he looked pretty cool so i'm gonna do it too because it looks cooler than what i currently do with my scarf

I just dont dig the european loop on dudes. not even on euro dudes.
I like the casual flippancy of just putting it around your neck and tossing the ends wherever the wind takes them.
actually, fuck it. just get a balaclava.
