View Full Version : NME article/interview about the new album

Right, this isn't very useful (yet), but just flicked across the new NME (UK music mag) at my mates house and there's a page article on the Beasties and the new album.
It said to expect it in May, and NME were played 6 finished songs. Apparently the boys have been searching extensively around the world for random/obscure samples, and in the 6 songs that were played to them - all hip hop - this was well reflected, with different styles and sounds going on. I can't remember exactly how they described it, but it seems it'll be denser.
Yauch also talked about the Santogold track but didn't give too much away...
Anyway I aim to pick this up tomorrow or something and I'll try post it word for word. They also had an obviously fake album name that the Beasties had given them and also a track name, which I imagine was again made up there and then. Oh, and it's apparently a lot less political lyrically speaking, though I can't remember if that was NME's view or a direct quote. Useless or what!
Anyway that's it that's all, thought I'd share, I appreciate people may not want pre-conceptions about the album but fuck it, we're all gonna read articles/reviews etc when they arrive and this is no different. Again, I'll post the whole thing when I get it, unless another UK board member has it and posts.
edit: Just remembered, from the sounds of it they didn't know what they were doing with the Santogold thing yet, but it will make the album.

I can scan it-that bit i'm easy with!
The bit i seem to have a problem with is putting up images-whenever i've tried here i just get the red x. I can't work out how to find the ITEM link (on flickr) and not the PAGE link. Sad but true-i guess that's what i get for choosing to write bad things on the screen for my teacher to find in I.T instead of paying attention.
So i'm like someones mum who can't programme the vcr. Sob
Tips please-and no laughing at the patheticness of it all.I'll scan it ready!

The writing style in NME is truly terrible. I wish it could go back to the old days of true music journalism, a la Melody Maker.

I wonder if that's the only 6 hip-hop tracks on there. Be nice if it were, as an indication of how elclectic they've gone. I get the feeling from that old gunnin-era link I posted that there's a chance there might be some hardcore. And track 2 will probably be instrumental; following a reason-built tt5b sounding hip-hop track just to fuck with us.

Actually, the author of that article is a freelance music journalist named Hardeep Phull, who was chosen by the band to enter the studio. He is the author of "The Story Behind The Protest Song", which is a cool book (i haven't read it but supposed to be good) about the top 50 protest songs that helped shape the last century. I am positive the article was written as best as possible and gave every bit of info the band wished him to.. leave us all hanging and speculating!

Yauch was on record recently saying that it'll be a "classic hip hop album", so I doubt it. I'm hoping for a pure hip hop album, personally.

I don't know about recently. You might be right in the end, but Mike D mentioned hardcore to that dude (among many other genres)
Mike proceeded to list ten or so different genres of music, leading me to believe that the new Beastie Boys' album--which he said should be out by next year--will be a Latin-infused, Asian hip-hop, hardcore, world-music album. At the end of his lengthy description, a smile appeared on his face, basically telling me, "C'mon Jim, you know better than to ask what a new Beastie Boys album is going to sound like,"
None of us really know, I spose. Although I do know about Funky Donkey (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=5kx6-raGX6U). Can you say beat relations?

Yeah I had no problem with the writing style either. Indifferent.
I think it'll be electric, despite what Yauch says. Classic hip hop could be Ill Communication, it's a free mix of styles but it's got hip-hop running through almost every sound. I like the bit about santogold and the hardcore...I think they'd consider putting some hardcore down.
Still, we'll see, I'm excitied either way.
