Plan to close Gitmo put into place (y)

WASHINGTON – Breaking forcefully with Bush anti-terror policies, President Barack Obama ordered major changes Thursday that he said would halt the torture of suspects, close down the Guantanamo detention center, ban secret CIA prisons overseas and fight terrorism "in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals."

Holding people without charges and torturing them only makes more enemies.

Obama moves to block Bush's "midnight" attempts to relax green rules (y)

http://www.businessgreen.com/business-green/news/2234916/obama-moves-quash-bush-midnight

In a traditional game of political whack-a-mole, the Obama White House has moved quickly to freeze all pending regulations proposed by the former president's administration, including president Bush's attempts to roll back large swathes of environmental legislation.

Why does bush hate our beautiful environmental heritage?

Stem Cell research becoming a reality

(CNN) -- Federal regulators have cleared the way for the first human trials of human embryonic stem-cell research, authorizing researchers to test whether the cells are safe to use in spinal injury patients, the company behind the trials announced Friday.

It is about time we take a step towards advanced medical research and healthcare, bringing Science back to medicine. Too bad many including Christopher Reeve have perished before seeing this become a reality.

Pay freeze for the already overpaid and barriers against the obscenely influential

President Barack Obama said he is freezing the pay of senior White House staff employees who make more than $100,000 a year and imposing new ethics rules designed to diminish the influence of lobbyists.

Those lobbyists love only one thing - $$$$$

I agree. add the anti-torture decree and a few more listed below. this was his first day alone...

• He froze the salaries of about 100 senior staffers earning more than $100,000.

• According to White House reports, he is preparing to sign an executive order today to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center within a year and halt military trials of terror suspects held there.

• Weighing in for the first time on the Gaza crisis, Obama vowed to back a fragile cease-fire. He telephoned President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel, King Abdullah of Jordan and President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority. And he prepared to give George Mitchell, the former Senate Democratic leader, a top diplomatic post for the region.

• Obama summoned Defense Secretary Robert Gates; Gen. James Jones, his national ecurity adviser; Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the Situation Room to talk about Iraq. Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of the Multi-National-Force-Iraq, joined through a video conference.

As a candidate, Obama vowed to withdraw U.S. combat forces from Iraq within 16 months and beef up the commitment in Afghanistan.

• He presided over a meeting of top economic advisers as the House Appropriations Committee moved toward approval of $358 billion in spending, part of the economic stimulus package making its way to his desk.

• Obama issued an executive order limiting the ability of former presidents to block the release of sensitive records of their time in the White House. That reverses a Bush directive. Obama said former presidents may ask to have certain documents kept private, but they no longer may compel the National Archives to do so.

President Obama to reopen the crown to Lady Liberty!

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

Quite a symbolic move. If the U.S. has Liberty locked up how can we help spread it?

The excuse that it is too dangerous should not apply. Driving your car, flying in a plane, drinking water, and bungee jumping are also dangerous but we don't ban them?

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Park-Service-to-Reopen-Lady-Libertys-Crown.html

Visitors to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty will once again be able to climb the 354 steps from the base of the Statue of Liberty to the iconic crown that overlooks New York Harbor, the Obama administration is expected to announce Friday.

you mean they haven't locked up all the white people yet?

you mean they didn't start tossing money out of planes over the inner cities?

you mean they didn't seize the bank accounts of everyone making over 50k/year yet?

Looks like I got exactly what I voted for, a return of common sense to the White House. Now maybe that the Statue will be re-opened he can fix the situation here at Hoover Dam...

thought they were building a new bridge downstream of the damn... not that it made a whole lot of sense to me, but they were doing that a few years ago.

what they've done is remove the human element from the Dam

you can't get on the Dam itself, you drive over it now and far away enough to prevent the mythical car bombing of dams that Bush and Co. warned us of.

oh I forgot...once out of the womb life isn't as precious

edited to add the thousands of children in the U.S. who have suffered under a "pro-life" president
