i won't usually run to catch a train if im on the way home. if im in grand central, i like to catch the next one - its a cool place to be. i will usually grab a fosters and sit in one of the big chairs, listen to music, maybe read a newspaper, people watch... till my train.
ive driven around listening to music twice in the last month, just getting lost and finding my way back home. the first time, i drove from connecticut to manhattan, no highways, strickly streets. its kinda nice to do to just unwind of space out. ive also found a lot of photo ops doing this. ct to manhattan on the street is pretty interesting, you can do it driving down one road, doing maybe five turns.
ive gotten from ny to philly on public transportation, nyc subway, to nj transit train to the septa. that kinda blows my mind for some reason. i also love being at airports,
i actually enjoy having a layover somewhere out in montana or nebraska, having a coupla beers at the bar, reading the local papers, striking up some convo if im so inclined.
i like taking the long way home. i want a boat(y)

Not enough people take time to smell the roses in life or to take the scenic route.
They'd rather sleep as long as they can and leave at the last minute and have to rush.
It's important to take that extra time for yourself. (y)
I do it a lot - I take the long way to work as well.
But this is all on my motorbike, which is an amazing de-stresser for me.
When I walk to and from walk and sometimes go slightly out of may way to. But only half a mile or so.
I don't get public transport cus its awful here. I'd always prefer to walk for 2 hours than get a 20 minute bus ride.

Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.
Hello lamppost,
What cha knowing?
I've come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in' doo-doo,
Feelin' groovy.
Got no deeds to do,
No promises to keep.
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me.
Life, I love you,
All is groovy.
Indeed.

well it's not snowy or anything here so it shouldn't be too dangerous... if you're worrying about me spilling my coffee or something.

i absolutely hate being in the car. the only time i really can stand to drive is on the highway going long distances. if i had a manageable commute time using public transit, i would probably do it.
the closest i come to doing what you're saying is stopping on my way home to go for a run, or to stop into some food store to just sort of wander the aisles and find something new for dinner

the other day, after my first real day at my new part time job downtown, I got on the bus and spaced out and missed my stop where I was supposed to get off and catch the train. instead of getting off at the next stop and walking back to the train, I just took the bus to another stop and waited to take another bus to the train in my old neighborhood. I saw some dude get stopped and arrested for some reason. there were like 5 cop cars, they must have been following him. I turned around and some dude was bent over one of the cars, and then like 8 cops were milling about chatting and whatnot. it was weird. middle of the afternoon.
then I waited for a stupid long time for the bus, and got to the train and decided to get lunch at at a mediterranean place that I never get to go to anymore. then got on a train.
it took me an extra hour to get home, but it was interesting. and weird to walk around in places I used to see everyday, but hardly anymore at all.
I got kind of nostalgic, and sad, or I guess melancholy. there are a lot of douchebags in my old hood since I moved away and things got all yuppified.
boring story, but my egg and cheese fettia was awesome balls. so was the 4 hours of guitar hero that followed.

3 times a week, after my class at Uni, i walk back home, it is a 2 hours promenade. The only time i was not able to do it is when the temperature was -30.
I could take the metro, 30 minutes and i am home but i hate it, so walking is a good alternative, it keep me in shape and relax my mind.

fosters is the only large size beer they sell at grand central. real men don't ask for a brand, they ax for the 'big one'. *grunt*

taking the long way home and being the observant fucker i am, i noticed two older dudes doing the same thing, except they both looked twisted. i saw them both miss the train and proceed to drink copious amounts of beer while waiting for the next train. its a beautiful thing that there are bathrooms on these trains and that you can drink whatever you want while riding them. but for some dudes like these guys, me thinks this time is more than unwinding.. its an escape from whatever awaits them at home

I love doing this when I have the chance, but anymore I feel like I'm always rushing from one place to the next, and when I have unexpected free time I feel so restless thinking about the things I'm not getting done.
Once I drove home from work just as a thunderstorm was a-brewin, and normally I'd hurry home but this time I decided to drive into the storm clouds and watch them pile and accumulate on top of one another like a hge black avalanche barrelling down from the sky. I could see the sharp outline of the storm clouds against the lighter sky in the distance, and the fuzzy wall of the advancing black edge bleeding into the lighter grey-blue. Thrilling.

i like this thread. having a car in the Northeast Corridor definitely gives people freedom that they wouldn't have otherwise.
I like your style, Bionic. Instead of stressing over mass transit, you give in that you are powerless and take in the good stuff that makes living in the city so special.
I don't think I ever had a beer in Grand Central, but I used to love riding the NJT to Trenton>Septa to Philly option...
sometimes we rode to Newark Airport for kicks and giggles.
I like to go to hotel bars and act like i am a guest there.
i take he long way home. zdrive and enot the surroundings< just si ack an dlisten to the music.

I walk to work every weekday and what's cool is there is a homeless person that sleeps where I walk(a walkway from one boat taxi to the next) and every morning he has done more artwork on the cement that makes my eye path each morning.
"I think he's on drugs" so I gave him some. And the artwork got Woo Howwwww. Givin my part to make society better. Here's to better landscapes

In the summertime I'll leave work and walk straight up Michigan Ave through downtown until I hit the lakefront at Oak Street then I'll walk the lakefront all the way home (about a good four or five miles). And I will take my own sweet time doing it, too. Excellent way to unwind if you don't feel like getting hammered in some bar.

you've got it, rems.
why get all heated over things i have no control over? it is an amazing place if you just sit and soak it in. im fascinated my old new york and subways seem to be a place where you get to see that most easily. im that guy sitting with his head against the glass, shielding the lights around my face with my hands, looking for abandoned stations and mole people. i love that shit. this is a great documentary that gives a taste (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dh4s78Db5OQ)
i did the philly trip again last weekend. a little different... my trip: commuter rail train, to subway, to chinatown bus, to septa subway, to septa trolley... door to door: 7 hours. and i didnt mind it one bit. actually philly has a cool gritty feel to it, how i remember ny was when i was a kid. i could get lost there easily.
on the way back, i listened to some tunes with that fosters.
i'd give anything to live in the old new york of the late 60's, 70's and early 80's for a week. (y), nuzz
