I heard from MCA's sister (I'm connected to the inner circle yo) that its going to be an exact remake of License to Ill but with new packaging that I would tell you about but then I'd be nothing and I'd have to kill myself for lack of purpose in this world so you'll just have to spend the next 6 months guessing about what it is and I'll tell you whether you're right or wrong except I won't really tell you I'll just hint around and whatnot and all the while the spotlight will be shining bright on me and I'll be on top of the world and building the legacy that I will tell to my grandchildren about one day.

TT5B was that much a disappointment to some people (myself included) that there was no point in coming here after '04
but i actually like the political stuff... it's the bland music and rhymes that turned me off... it seemed rushed and lacking creativity
but that's just my opinion

that's going to on be on there!
also, they are working on some psychobilly and rockabilly songs (Yauch is a stand-up bass messiah now), a tough-guy new york hardcore collabo with Rick Ta Life from 25 Ta Life and Freddy Madball, a swedish death metal song, a ska song with Angelo from Fishbone (it might just be him doing poetry as Dr. Madd Vibe over a Mix-Up track.)
the tour will have Cool Kids and Paint It Black on the first leg.
that's all i know for now..based on my sources.

I'm going to try to be a good sport and keep my mouth shut but I never like albums with special guests. I hope they decide to save all that shit for the extras on the Japanese CDs or something.
Brother McDuff
01-27-2009, 02:13 AM
There's nothin wrong with special guests as long as there's not like 30 of them and the material is actually a creative collaboration and not just another name to try and garner more record sales. I know what you mean, though. The special guest card has been used, abused, and played out to the extreme. Luckily, though, the bboys come from a generation of musicians who know how to value and utilize their collaborators. How it's supposed to be, y'know?

They've always done the righty with their guest spots. My worry is that they haven't even made the Santogold track yet, and there's only 6 completed hip-hop tracks. I seriously hope that's all the hip-hop on there, because if it's meant to be a one-genre record, then theroetically it's only around half-done and due out in 4 months.
Push it back, take your time.

Yeah blah blah we've played this game since before Hello Nasty. I don't hope it's the same mix of styles - if the hip-hop is dense and mindbending then it would be dope to hear some real cohesive and convincing risks in other genres.
Whatever, I think they spent the last two albums touring to get themselves in the mindset to create this one.
I hope for some the rapping to be in the tag team style the hello nasty cuts: 'superdisco breakin' and 'the move'. I like how they interrupted each other mid flow. It gave an off the cuff feel to things.
It would also be nice to have something consisting of more elaborate layers.
I liked tt5b but I found the sound to be quite flat. To me HN signified a band who were wanting to fill every second with as much sonic as possible. I was left feeling that tt5b was a step back in direction.
I'd like the idea of them to be doing another full on hip hop album, these guys are almost peerless in terms of career longevity and age so it would be another chapter in the story of hip hop and rap and how it can be delivered globally by a group who have (relatively) been around since hip hop year dot.
There's still much to prove (y)

Hear, hear! I'm proper bored of small minded individuals hating on TT5B and TMU - what do they hope to achieve? Sometimes I just think that the people that pin-point TT5B's more overtly political material are simply disgruntled Neo-Fascists (sorry, neo-cons, my mistake) getting upset because they're on the wrong side of history or something? - but that would just be daft:rolleyes:.
It's hard to innovate all the time - and sometime's things are just fine as they are - I thought dropping TMU was just a big fat fuck off to the whole commercial music game - a really solid lump of funk for capitol to stick in their pipe and smoke - the Beasties doing what they felt like doing regardless - and it's a pretty unique release for a band in their position in 2007.
I think TT5B spoke for itself when it comes to people that have nothing constructive to say..................If you don't like it then hey, find (or even create) something that you do like instead.
Oh, and while we're all putting in our requests and sharing our esoteric knowledge - I hope this new album is just back-to-back pop-country ballads, made for heavy rotation on drive-time radio - I heard country Mike had a relapse.

Yeah. Everyone sees the mix of styles/genre swapping as the golden era. To be fair, Check Your Head and Ill Communication are probably my favourite records, but what's the point in forcing something like that. They're such unforced, organic records. Hello Nasty isn't all my cup of tea, I think it's good - and a mix of styles - but at least it's different from those two preceding records.
So yeah, I'm up for it being different, and there being all different styles - but let's be honest, an album mixing hardcore, hip-hop and instrumentals is almost a backwards step for them. But fuck it, they know what they're doing, and I have high hopes, as ever.

I think the Mix-Up was and is fucking cool. It's revision music for me, and I mean that in no bad sense, cos it can just be stuck on with whatever. Great grooves, great bass, great production too. Oh, and fuck me the BREAKS on that record. I think it's a really cohesive piece of work and I really don't see much 'goofyness' in it at all, for the record (that's not in regards to anything you've said).
And yeah, I'm not sure about the deliberately un-commercial side of things, but if it pissed Capitol off then good. Any label that puts Triple Trouble out ahead of An Open Letter to NYC, and then only releasing the latter in the fucking UK deserves to be put in their place - they clearly don't have a clue.

It'd be cool to know how much of a difference Mario made. The production on CYH/IC is so perfect for those albums, but I assume the Beasties had as much a hand in that as Mario (co-produced etc). I like the thought of Mario wanting to keep it old school, non of these computer beats.

Why do you say that TT5B flopped? I remember it getting really positive reviews over here and the tour was strong, especially given that they were coming off a 6 year break. I don't know that any CDs sell as well since people started stealing all their music so how do you measure CDs sold against the pre-internet past when people couldn't pirate music as easily?
I don't understand why something like Brr Stick Em was left off, and there were definitely some weak tracks, but I enjoyed most of those songs live and some of my friends who aren't big fans of the band really like that CD.

Well a lot of the people that criticised TMU seemed to be moaning about a lack of lyrics so someone must be paying attention.
I was just saying I find the constant nit-picking on those two albums a bit annoying - I'm bored of it that's all - I've got nothing wrong with a constructive critique.
For example - a lot of people seem to find the beats on TT5B a bit light and simple - I've always had this slightly odd idea that maybe they were gearing the beats for a specific purpose? The mix on the album is slightly odd but you can turn it up real loud without loss of clarity - I think the beats might have been made with the intention of rocking big stadiums and arenas - coming off the back of the HN tours that's what they were used to doing - so they make an album with lots of chant-along choruses and a few rabble-rousing party tracks and try a new slant on production.
I'm probably totally full of shit here - it's just my theory.
It's funny how a lot of the audience that does seem to appreciate the more recent stuff are younger fans - not comparing the albums to past glories just enjoying them in the context of here and now - just a thought.

No, I get where you're coming from. I really hated the cornball lyrics too, especially because of the 9/11 stuff. I thought "They're just stringing together random shit about NYC." But at some point it started to grow on me. It was a huge surprise, but now I think I actually like it BECAUSE it is so obvious and cornball. All good Brother man!
I actually don't love the track either- although I am slightly more into it than you appear to be. But just as happened to Doc- shit grew on me, so I don't mind it now. I think the thing that sort of threw it over to good side of the force for me is how much the boys really seem to ENJOY performing it. Unlike the playful way they mess around and have fun with the lyrics of tried and true Beastie hits they still are very earnest and stay on script with it. I feels like its still important to them to perform it "right".
Look I will admit being a ny'er probably has something to do with my like of it (as it clearly does mean something a little extra for the boys). But that song just sort of captures something. Its probably stupid to try and articulate what- but its real and you can feel it even if you ain't from NY. I dunno, I think. Look I get it, I'm so not in love with the hook (but I do really dig the intro). It's NOT the jam. No doubt. But it IS something else. I have to respect that. As I have no problem doing when people don't ding on it.
Its just a song man.

I firmly believe that that record was worth a couple listens. I then sold it back to the local Indie Record Shop. Nothing on the record wow'd me. The Beasties on those tracks wouldn't of salvaged that boring lackluster 5 track EP. Zack de la Rocha should of kept recording with DJ Shadow. Or at least keep making albums with Rage.
I'm not doubting Mario's talent as a producer. The guy is aces. It's been since Hello Nasty since they have worked with him. The recording was finished on that in 1998. 11 years ago! It seems the Beasties have moved on. Maybe other people should as well.
By the way. Word on the street about Mario C. is...
Most recently, he mixed the debut EP of One Day As a Lion, a new project compromising of Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against The Machine) and Jon Theodore (previously of The Mars Volta).

That's funny, I actually thought it was Zack's rapping (not quite the singing) that makes the record worth listening to. The drums are nice and chunky, the keys are dirty and catchy, but just those two elements can't carry the tracks. Zack, on the other hand, is in top form, I feel. Really spittin' some funky venom.

I'm going to listen to this EP again tonight. Maybe, it will hit me differently this time. I might not of given it enough chance.

You heard the "One Day As A Lion" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpM-3ezUdfk) record Mario and Money Mark did with Zach De La Rocha?
Shit sounds like it could be Beasties circa 1993.
Yeah, getting together with Mario for a record would be the tits.
I would like to thank you RobMoney$--I was completely out of the loop on this festival. I dig it. It has a Cake feel too it with heavy distortion.
Once again thanks(y)
-The new record's like "Check Your Head".
-A lot of old school hip-hop.
-Money Mark was in the studio with them yesterday.
-And supposedly, "they're ready to go." (ie practicing for the
tour)

It seems the Beasties have moved on. Maybe other people should as well.
This'll be something I'll make sure I throw back at you if Mario winds up contributing on this record.

Bad-Ass.
Thanks for the scoop.

If it happens... I will gladly buy you a beer. Maybe two...
Do you drink at The Khybar? It's my favorite dirty punk rock bar with the best jukebox ever.

Sounds nice and all, but where's the info from? Not calling you a liar, just don't know why they'd start practicing already for a tour that's yet to exist, let alone one that probly won't start for another 5 to six months.

I like how Horace has been registered here since 2004 and decided to make his very first post today.
I'm still hoping the new album is a gospel/salsa combo.
I was told they will play folk and polka on the new album...

Haven't been in years.
I love punk and all, but I can't say I'm into the scene too much.
I usually just stay at one of my neighborhood bars or if I go out drinking (which I don't do very often anymore) I usually find myself at the bars downtown near the Gay-borhood...Nodding Head and Moriarity's.
I go to this great dive bar down there called Oscars sometimes.
Pints are $2!
I have a few friends that live in CC and meet them down there from time to time.

Then you won't believe the possibility of a full blown hip-hop tour with no instruments or band ala 1987.

I honestly hope that one isn't true.
That was the TT5B tour, instruments just adds so much to their show.
I'm gonna go ahead and demand instruments on this tour right now, in fact.

I don't believe it myself. I don't know if they have the stamina to do a 2hr all rap show. But that's an idea getting tossed around.

I don't believe it either. I dont' think they have the stamina for a 2hr hip-hop set. But that's an idea being tossed around.

Don't forget Mike mentioned something about "on ice"...so I'm expecting a Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan rematch.
I also wonder if remastering PB got them to reconsider putting a few different PB songs into their setlist for the upcoming tour? Hey Ladies, Shadrach, Johnny Ryall

I seem to remember instruments on the TT5B aka Pageant Tour. Or, was I that high? :D
I'd take the Pageant style tour, with small instrumental sets as a midway break and encore rather than the In the Roud style tour, with jumping back and forth from mic to instruments. Just my pref, obv.
