ok, so i was going to be completely hilarious yar, and say my favourite comedian was Iceman-the WORST comedian i have ever seen. I know!! It would have been HILARIOUS. But i thought i'd double-check to make sure i had remembered the name ok-can't find reference to him anywhere-not even Wiki. I know he was a proper tosser so i guess he's been deleted. Unless of course i did get his name toally wrong and the hideous not-funny twat i'm thinking of is called something else.!

Anyway it's Bill Hicks

But Frankie Boyle is amazing too-made me cry and hurt laughing

i fail to see how you can have leary on your list and not hicks. Granted leary is funny, got a really funny face, and swears like a trooper but a lot of his subject material and jokes have been lifted straight off hicks but with a less serious and lighter tone than the great man. I like leary i just dont think a list with leary on and not hicks is a good list.sorry

Carlin was tops. Period.

then almost as good and almost equally enjoyable:
Bill Hicks
Brian Regan
Jim Gaffigan
Chris Rock
Emo Phillips
Stephen Wright
Mitch Hedberg

then the rest
plenty I like here who are funny more than not :

Dave Chapelle
Louis CK
Lewis Black

have a soft spot in my heart for the Cos's standup from my childhood, same with Eddie Murphy but I know now they both were not at the same level (for me) as those above since their stuff doesn't really stand the test of time (Cosby's weirdly does more than Murphy's).

I don't really know Pryor's stand up- which is near criminal for someone who grow up loving and listening to stand up as much as music- but it is what it is and I can't include him when I'm ignorant of his stuff.

For my money :
John Stewart
Stephen Carrell
Stephen Colbert
are the funniest comedians on television but their not doing stand up so I'm not sure what the ruling on them would be.
My list my rules so they on it! And if we're opening it up to a definition of comedic actors- sheeet the floodgates be opening!-

How about the Marx Brothers?
Will Ferrell (et all)?

could really keep going so Im gonna stop.
Stupid snow day.

Jon Stewart does stand up. He was pretty good. His stuff about his kid was funnier than his political stuff. I liked Jerry Seinfeld. And believe it or not Joan Rivers was pretty funny when I was a kid and saw her.

Eddie Izzard usually puts on an enjoyable show. But he's a little less funny every time I see him.

Honestly, David Sedaris is funnier than any stand up I've seen but I don't like stand up as a rule. It bothers me that the rest of the audience will be laughing and I don't think it's funny. I laugh more at That 70s Show or 30 Rock than I do at an average stand up gig. Bill Bryson is also funny. I guess I like funny readings better than stand up. :p
