Just gave a listen, interesting stuff even though most commentaries tend to ramble.

I always wondered why that horrible scratching was on the 3-minute rule. Never thought it fit. Glad they explained that one. Weird how they keep shit that sounds bad (on their 2nd major album) just cause they thought it was funny.

Anyone else have questions answered on the download?

yup. that the ad was in fact real. I knew that the cover was a faked sign and not in brooklyn, but I also thought that they made up the audio ad part, too. but sounds like they took it off some regagge show/mix tape. at least i think that's what I heard.

Yup.

Theres a video version of the same commentary that came with the deluxe editions that has like an extra 10 minutes where they goof around, talk about the cover photo and why they think PB was not as commercially successful as LTI (which leads to a great exchange where they decide that they were as big as Peter Gabriel but not as big as Hammer!).
Very exciting times!

talk about the cover photo

can you share a lil bit about what they say about the cover? like in my mind the art director and/or Yauch just added that little fictious sign to the existing photo. but do they expand, or tell anything interesting? Thanks/sorry to bug.

Yes I agree it's an absolute great time right now to be a Beastie fan!!!! it's all happening so fast..the PB 20th, the CYH re-issue, the new lp, the 2009 tour. :D

I just watched that part again because it was the least interesting part of the bonus stuff (for me).
Yauch claims he had an epiphany in the middle of the night that they could do the shot and wrap it around the lp & use it as cd art foldout. He says he was so excited he called Horovitz in the middle of the night to tell him. Adam claimed to still be mad about that...
They talk about building the sign and dressing up the corner with props and stuff and that 3 guys came to help and they can only remember one of there names. Which is interesting because I'm pretty sure theres a quote in the 33 1/3 book where whoever actually did the bulk of the work on the shoot was a little miffed that Yauch got the credit for the picture.
Also Mike enjoys the Jay L(EE)no program

just a shout out thanks for dropping this info for me! interesting how they jazzed up the corner to make it look better. yeah, I remember reading about that guy in the book. he's credited with 2 others as assistants but he actually took the shot I believe. but I guess being as it was yauch's idea he felt to get credit.

anyway thanks again!~

Does anyone else remember the other Paul's Boutique ad, read by a woman?
I think it was on one of the 12"s, Exciting Evening, or Love American.
20 years later, and I can still hear her voice, "That's Paul's Boutique, ask for Janice when you call there."

I remember reading about a special edition of the 20th anniversary re-issue somewhere which comes with a t-shirt and other bonus material, but it's apparently not on amazon. Was I hallucinating?

That comes with the "Deluxe Digital Download" or the "20th Anniversary Commemorative Package".

Buy from here (http://paulsboutique.beastieboys.com/purchase/index.html) for that stuff.

The commentary is hilarious - so many dubious quotes and bits of smutty inuendo - I was in tears of laughter through much of it - plenty of little stories and vague attempts at giving us some serious 'controversy'.

The Beasties can't seem to remember fuck all about making Paul's Boutique though - it sounds like they were basically well off their tits for much of this period - plenty of interesting info and stuff but an equal number of tangents and nonsense.

Another triumph.(y)

I think what you're talking about was on the Skills To Pay the Bills video. Funny shit.

I remember my fist visit to NYC was in 1992. My buddy and I took one of the subways to Brooklyn to try and find Paul's Boutique. We actually found a Paulette's Boutique. :)

Then after further studying the album cover we were able to see the yellow street signs and figure out we needed to find Ludlow and Rivington. I'll have to dig out that picture.

You're talking about Ask for Janice, Pt. II. It was included on the Skills to Pay the Bills VHS. You can see/hear it on YouTube. I do not believe it was included on either of the Paul's Boutique-era singles.

i think one of the funniest shits on there that i actually laughed at loud at,

when AY confessed to having replaced one of AH's guitar riffs with a similar bass line on high plains drifter (i think)...

AH: "OH..... reallly..... you;ll be hearing from OUR LAWYERS."

ha!

Mike: (re: Johnny Ryall)

He'd disappear for awhile then he'd reappear... I don't think he was incarcerated. He made it seem it was a, like a, clean-out type a thing. I mean I don't think he was out gettin a colonic....

Horovitz: Excuse me?!

Yauch: Wow....

Two of the funniest things to me are that Ad-rock says he can't remember recording a couple of songs. That along with most of the stories I've heard about them reinforces my belief that the Beasties were seriously wild and out of their minds for the periods of the first two albums and they were going full speed most of the time.

The other funny thing is when Yauch does the voice imitating Russell during Johnny Ryall. Anytime they make fun of or imitate Russell is hilarious to me.

So the extra part of the video commentary that wasn't part of the audio download is now available on the front page in four parts in the factoid section. Enjoy
