So amazon gave me some free downloads from their music store and I used them but damn their files are huge. I have no idea why but songs are like 9-12mb. Anyway over the years I haven't acquired too much music legally but I am looking to start. So where should I go to download music? thanks

if i don't have the cash for cd's or records or if i wanna check out music i'm not familiar with and make sure it's worth buying... i usually download MP3s for free... i don't see the point in paying for them

90% of the stuff i've bought on cd and vinyl in the past year i downloaded first

i can't answer your question if you mean where to pay for MP3s

Interesting new site that has come up in the last few weeks that offers downloads

http://www.spotify.com/en/

Its legal and I think it works either get music with adverts or pay for it

www.play.com also sell downloads.

personally, I get most my music via last.fm and torrent. I like online radio and I'm happier with the fact that all the music I listen is a cloud. But I don't like much new music at all.

one good, legal place to DL for free is the hype machine. basically it compiles all of the mp3s posted on blogs. you can listen to them on the hype machine and if you want to DL them, you go to the actual blog (they even provide the link) and snatch it right up.

it's a great way to check out new stuff.

as for buying...now that Itunes is DRM free, i'll probably buy from them again. Amazon is cheaper than itunes so i purchase from them as well, and they've been DRM free for awhile. i just got a $50 itunes card for my birthday so i need to spend that wisely.

edit: i forgot to add the site
www.hypem.com

I'm on this, it's great but the adverts (even though few and far between) are real mood killers.

You have to be invited to join it too.

I'm beginning to feel like the only person who gets music through legal channels! Never downloaded, but just use i-tunes for stuff I can't get on hmv, amazon or play websites.

I spend loads of money in the iTunes store. Although I also prefer to buy real CDs. Many of the CDs you get of the Amazon Market place are even cheaper than in the iTunes store - and you have the real thing with booklet and everything else. :D

f all of that.

this is what you do.

say you want some new foghat right. you simple go to google and type

"foghat rapidshare"

than just check the links that come up. if you know the name of the album put that in there and usually one pops right up. occasionally you have go to into page 2 or 3 to find it, but rarely.

not that i have done, or do this. i just heard it works :)

many rapidshare sharers use blogs as an excuse to get their shares out. So if you use google blog search you will get better search results imo using checkyourprez's method.

Anyway, the reason I am here is that spotify have just announced you don't need an invite to get involved anymore. http://www.spotify.com/

Not sure if this a temporary measure however so if you're interested, get an account now I'd say.

Internet, torrents. Downloading music is legal in Canada.
