im bored.
im watching a show called "prophets of science fiction"
he said the atom bomb would be developed 30 years before it actually was. he even coined the term "atom bomb". he also said it would be used in a war in 1955 in a war pitting Briton and France vs. Germany. its says leo zalard (sp) was stimulated by reading what wells had written. wells also talked about a nuclear bomb being a chain reaction. that gave Zalard the idea, he patented it a couple years later and than talked to Einstein about it, who was doing his own this with all that. it also is a good chance this show said if he didnt read that a nuclear bomb would not have been invented during the war because no one else was really that close. which is interesting to think about what could have happened.
he made a bunch of other pretty accurate predictions, included air warfare in 1901 3 years before the write bros first flight. and tanks in 1903 way before they were invented.
kinda interesting.
I wouldn't say predict. He was a writer and thus has to draw on real life to get his stories.
Some of the crazy bull shit we've seen in some science fiction of now will some day be true. And then historians may draw on that as 'prediction' to.
He was a cynic to. He toned down his writing to accommodate a more realistic time. I think he might of being pushing his own agenda politically to. We all do it. Like headlines like 'The Ice Caps will melt in 20 years' and 'Global Warming Myth is helping the earth become a icy wasteland'.
I really know nothing of the man though, but I think first of foremost he was a fiction novelist.
HG wells also wrote about martians invading the earth and dying of colds, so

H.G Wells was the voice of Unicron in the animated Transformers movie. (y)
I predict that in future we will have flying cars and jumpers that can turn people invisible.

HG wells also wrote about martians invading the earth and dying of colds, so
the program i was watching said the martians invading earth although obviously a story, was an analogy for humans and how if we become purely intellectual beings we would become to dependent on technology. the martians in his books were basically just giant brains and had to rely on technology for everything.
and dieing from colds is no joke. 1918 pandemic, and our more recent bird flu escapades prove such.
and he also was a bit of a cynic. he thought humans were going to be the cause of their own destruction. i really dont see that as to big of a stretch however...

He's kind of right about the dependence on technology thing. If we live long enough I could see humans becoming less and less able bodied. There's a good episode of South Park (the one where the internet breaks down) which demonstrates this point quite well.
I did an OU course about if robots will take over the world
The short answer is: They already do.

haha, Orson, not H.G.
I always confused the two because of Orson Welles' famous radio broadcast of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" with Mercury Radio Theater in 1938.
Mass Hysteria and Panic ensued, and millions were duped into thinking the aliens had really landed in New Jersey.
