ima get a tattoo of my grandma's name and the finnish word for grandma. but I want to use a cool font, not a stupid one.
does anybody know of any good fonts that I may not have heard of?
also, any interesting placements? (above the waist, cheeky monkeys)

something with flowing script would be nice, maybe with a hint of floral?
I wouldn't go san serif, too stoic
you have skills, draw it out
and I would suggest the shoulder....arm tattoos on girls are eh and anywhere else (belly button/chest area, small of back) gets too close to sexy time
I have yet to get a tattoo

but finns are stoic!
no floral for me, but script might work. I just can't really think of anything right now. I was going to write it out in my own stylized script, but it looks weird.
I kinda want forearm or wrist, but my mom would kill me.
agh.

Yeah, get Comic Sans or Wingdings of your Grandmother's name on your buttcheeks.

maybe somewhere along the spine or something
go to dafont.com and find one there you like.

ya, I was going to do isoäiti, but now I think I'm going to get just her first name.
and I haven't decided on placement, but I want to do simple script, embroidery style with finnish blue "thread".
might get a stylized hammer with isoäiti "carved" in the handle also. she liked to build things. I'll put that one on my forehead.
also, re: comic sans,
so you know re: comic sans.
It was a obvious joke - I hate all use of that font, I think any1 who uses it in anything should have their computer taken away from them
Sorry, if it was in bad taste. Wasn't meant to be. Well it was but it wasn't meant to be offensive. :o

the angry face is in jest, I know you guys were kidding. (y)
Magneito font is pretty cool
I want a tattoo of a big fuck off anchor on my arm.
I'll have to third comic sans.
C'mon guys be serious, everyone knows that 'sand' is where it's at.
Anyway ms Wood, go to a parlour and ask the artist for examples of fonts that they are comfortable to use. Many of them (worth anything) with show you examples of fonts they have created or indeed their own 'handwritten' type work. Don't just scour a font site for whatever looks good. You will just end up with a traced up printout on your body that will look too clinical and clean.

I would if I could, but it is really bad.
camo, I like that script...but is no very scandinavian. I guess I was asking for fonty advice as something to jump from, it wouldn't be something I'd put down as is.
also, sand is the worst font! I can't believe it's used ever. it doesn't even look like sand. actually, I hate curlz font more.

what about yours?
AceFace

are you designing your tattoo yourself? if you are then awesome! if you're not, then maybe give the tattoo artist and idea of what you want and see if they can come up with something amazing. you might not even have to worry about "font". i know they usually don't use that word in the tattoo world. it's just lettering. and some can be more difficult than others.

mine's pretty bad, but I can make it look okay with effort. my mom has beautiful handwriting though, it must skip a generation.
ultimately, I think it might be best to find a tattoo artist who will come up with something cool that incorporates the thread, and hammer as well. I don't know how much that costs though. as much as I'd like to design something, I would be disappointed if it wasn't executed exactly as I had imagined. so it might be better to have the tattoo artist design it. meh.

he rules. but I bet it's expensive. I guess I could just email and ask.

No no no nooooo I meant that the 'handwritten' look was nicer than the sterile looking type one.
I think Kenny Guido uses sans in his flyers.

and dont forget that more people you know might die and it would look weird having dozens of names written on your body but if you had a special relationship with your grandma then it's ok, i guess
i first wanted a tattoo of my bunny after it died but then i thought i might probably get 100 more pets in my life and i probably wont have enough skin to tattoo them all over me
the main reason why i would never get one is because of the color fate-ing after some time, especially when you get it around the elbow area

That's some great work, and some really weird tattoos. I can't believe that there are people walking about with an ear of corn that says "Grandpa" across it.
I've been crazy about Bookman Swash lately (font).

yeah, I already had the name idea years ago, just never got it done. she was my dude. lived with her from age 7 to 17. her mind left us 5 years ago, but now that she's really gone, it's quite upsetting. more than I thought it would be. I was a blubbering mess at the funeral. I was going to make a thread about it, but then decided to just make one about the tattoo, so I could occupy my mind with font research. ha.

sometimes it's not so much the expense, but also how far in advance the artist is booked out...it can take up to 6 months to get a sitting with a popular tattoo artist.
and then depending on how big and intricate it is you might need more than one sitting.
I don't know, I guess some of the better artists usually can command $125 to $175 and hour.
oh and as a general rule...don't go smaller cause it's your first. bigger designs age much better, in the long run you'll be much happier (you probably know that the ink will tend to spread out in your skin over time...that's why some really old tats look blurry...but larger designs allow room for that spreading.)
for placement...and artist can really help you with that too...so go have a consultation somewhere. ;)

OMG i have seen so much worse. the neat thing about weird tattoos is that they all have a meaning for someone.
my husband has a severed green hand playing the circle game. pretty weird but it reminds him of his college buddies.
grandpa was probably a corn farmer or something like that.

I'd rather write mummi than isoäiti. I called my grandma's mummo tho.
French Script looks nice I think.
And if you're in Chicago let Dawny (http://www.dawngrace.com/) do your tattoos!

I think I'm going to drop the isoäiti, and I had never heard of mummi until I started researching. I never called her anything but grandma, so there's no reason to infuse an inordinate amount of finnishness. I would like to include sisu somewhere, because finnish pride and strength was important to her. probably "suomi sisu" because when I had a car with a sisu bumpersticker, people thought it was a school or something.
thanks for the link to dawn, I like her line work. and it seems like she knows how to work with the body's curves when designing, so it doesn't just look slapped on. she was voted best of 2008 though, I bet she's expensive too. blargh.

Just because she was voted the best doesn't mean she's expensive, it means she's good!
Also make hints about Soundtrack of Our Lives so she might give you a discount ;) (I don't think a hello from me is enough....)
